Looks like we're currently at the 4th biggest July ever (Also 4th biggest month in general). If the weekend adjusts up a bit and Monday is strong there's a good chance this ends up as the second biggest month ever, though probably will be just shy of the record

Top gun fell sub 30% in second weekend. It also had 8 straight weekends where it fell around or better than 20%, two of which were increases. Not to mention another two sub 15% drops early in its run. It's legs were something else entirely...

Personally I find the problem with Disney+ is they have nothing truly original that breaks out. They only put out star wars and marvel shows that people who are already fans of those things watch. Mandalorian is like the only show they've ever made that expanded beyond it's franchises existing fans.

Marvels will decrease but I think it has more potential than people give it credit for. But I'm clearly in the minority who thinks the trailers actually looked decent. Kamala is a great character even if her show had the typical marvel show issues. Rambeau on the other hand had probably the worst superhero introduction in all of marvel. She was just a normal character and then she like... Walked through Wanda's barrier and then now she had powers or something? Literally barely a plot point in the show. She was just a side character until they were like... And then she got powers or whatever! Didn't help that that was the moment the show went from incredible to typical marvel cliche. That said the actual character is fine so hopefully the movie can develop her a bit more.

I never understand why sequels ever get made with some of these awful names Suicide squad and then... The suicide squad? What is the purpose of that name... who could have possibly had any reason to name it that

I don't think I've ranked all the MCU films in a while... have we reached 30 yet lol? That's starting to become a pretty long list XD

Films don't make high 200s these days. So worry not for destiny will drag Oppenheimer passed 300 one way or another

They can move every film but just leave dune please 😢 I can't wait any longer for Villeneuve. Actually it's even better if they move every other film so that way audiences MUST watch Dune...

The films are finally running into the same issues the comics have where so many characters die and then get revived, and they have multiple timelines and realities, and versions of characters, and alternate stories, etc. Etc. until to the average person the story has become essentially meaningless and the characters and plots no longer matter. I do understand that that's how comic books have always been and to some that's even maybe part of their style, but unfortunately it's also what turns off the general audiences. For a long time I hoped the film's would stay away from going down that road and emulate comic books too hard, but unfortunately we've gotten there

No way the next avengers gets 2 billion. Infinity war barely managed it and the next ones going to have like none of the most popular characters.

U can tell I'm disconnected from the world cause I didn't even realize press tours were still that important lol. I see the trailers for films when they come out and then never see anything else. Didn't realize there were people who actually even still watched talk shows and interviews and red carpet events to get excited for a film

My brother goes to an average of like 1-2 films a year MAYBE. Meanwhile me and my girlfriend and our friends go to dozens XD. A lot of people I know only go a couple times a year cause of costs, which I understand if you're dragging along a family and get tons of snacks (could be like almost 100$ sometimes), but if you're just paying for yourself and you go on Tuesday and just sneak in a snack or something it can be like... 8$ a movie

Thing is, if studios start mass pushing films to 2024 to spread out what they've got finished, then at least SOMETHING will have to stay to take advantage of all that empty space. So question is... What gets to stay?

Honestly I feel it's the opposite sometimes. Why bother remaking an old film if you're not going to put an original spin on it in some way?

I've been around box office numbers long enough now to know that every time a year looks completely devoid of any hype something good inevitably pops out and surprises everyone. Sometimes all the "big franchises" of the year look weak, but it's very rare to get through the year without anything at all doing well. The strike is a bit of a unique roadblock so thats obviously the biggest issue. I still remember after the Infinity Saga and Star Wars Sequels finished in 2019 a LOT of people were worried that we wouldn't see another 500M+ film outside of Avatar for years and years. Nobody could have predicted Barbie, Top Gun, Mario, even the heights NWH got to. Just like nobody beforehand could've predicted Avengers, Jurassic World, etc. Always room for surprises

A director can be responsible for a films success without the reason being "people heard the directors name and all showed up"

Idk if I should be getting involved in this but I don't see how it became an argument in the first place... No, Barbie did not break out because people were "so hype for another Greta gerwig movie". She was not a household name, and even if she's a good director was not bringing out the big mainstream crowds because everyone's been waiting for her next big thing. It's doing well because the concept had big hype, and as a good director she followed that up with a quality product Yes people are taking notice of her now because of Barbie, and I'd be willing to guess there's a good chance this translates into future hype for her next films, as a lot of the mainstream audiences are now going to know who she is and as a good director she should be able to keep making good movies Edit: also Jordan Peele makes horror movies, not really possible for him to do these kind of numbers

WW it'll need to beat Joker if it wants that crown which is even less likely probably

Now we just need Oppenheimer to pass Passion of the Christ for highest grossing r-rated film domestically. Oppenheimer to 400!!

I haven't seen MI7 but it's probably at least partly due to the two part nature of it that it's making less money. Audiences don't really like the whole "two part" thing unless they feel it's warranted. Something like IW and endgame really felt like two different films that shared an arc. Something like Harry Potter allowed the last book to be more accurately depicted. Something like Pirates 2 and 3 shared one story but felt like the characters had different arcs for each film. Hunger games on the other hand was only made worse by being split. Same with the Hobbit. And let's not forget what happened with that Divergent sequel. Specifically advertising a film as "THIS IS PART ONE OF TWO" makes people go "oh so it's not a complete Movie then" before they ever bother to see if it actually felt like it worked

It's really interesting how after more then a decade of blockbusters being notoriously front loaded (and getting even more so), we've actually seen the biggest films lately starting to do better over the long term. Films like top gun, Mario, barbie, Avatar 2 as well have all opened a lot lower then the megahits of the 2010s, but have all managed to leg it out to huge numbers. Of course, the big superhero films have only gotten more front loaded if anything, and spiderman NWH is still the biggest film of the 20s domestically, but it's still interesting

It's also pretty bold for a company that's just started to crawl it's way back from complete irrelevance

Guys with how well Barbie and Oppenheimer are doing I'm starting to worry this month is going to get FRUSTRATINGLY close to July 2011s record

Happy Oppenheimer didn't end up with 10.5M like it seemed originally.
