I don't think a catalog of characters is all that important. People will get behind new characters if you let them grow organically. Most of the MCU consists of characters that casual audiences might have known the names of, at best, prior to seeing them on the big screen. The list of characters from Marvel and DC that were previously household names is pretty short.
I guess but Joker and Aquaman were definitely known characters whose fame started those movies on the front foot

The big difference is that JL was supposed to really kick off the DCEU, while SW was going to have to move onto something new no matter what happened with TROS. In that sense the stakes were always really low for TROS.
But the DCEU has risen from those ashes because it has a catalogue of popular characters. Joker and Aquaman doing amazing proves that, and it has already proven post Batman and Robin to be able to resurrect its franchises. I’m not sure Star Wars can do that

Boomboom - I could never write something like that based on how I felt the box office was doing.
The movie is way better than what you have just splurged. The film took years of people’s devotion and labour to produce/create.
all kudos to you if you think there need to be firings etc, but really?
to this Star Wars fan, and countless fans around the world - we liked this movie a whole bunch.
I don’t consider this a heartbreaking mess in the slightest as a fan from 1977. What say you? I mean, how old are you out of interest? Are you of the same age as me? Are you genuinely heartbroken from a movie that adores 1977-1983 as much me? If so, then honestly, how did you feel from 1999-2005? I’m fascinated.
Haha it was bit over dramatic but I meant it as my last word. Still home for the holidays and these cfb games suck so needed to entertain myself somehow
I’m in my 20s so grew up in the prequel era as a kid and like all kids back then loved them and the OT. I know the problems with the prequels and do see them but will always look at them fondly for that reason but I do love ROTS and will rank it my third favorite.
I was really into Star Wars as a kid read a lot of the expanded universe books and played the games.
So when Disney bought it I was excited for more movies but it was bittersweet because I knew it meant the EU was over.
I was excited for these movies and even liked TFA until I thought more about it. I realize a lot of people worked hard on these movies and cared but they for me are just bad movies that do nothing for the universe. They are unoriginal and uninteresting. But my biggest issue with them is what they do to the characters from the OT they make them all depressing shadows of what they once were. Like turning Superman into an Alcoholic or Batman into a murderer. I compare it to where the characters were in the EU and I’m sad.
I’m happy you liked them but they’re just not for me. I’m not going to say something stupid like this killed my childhood or some other man baby line. These movies are what they are but I’m no longer excited for new Star Wars and that makes me a bit upset.

Rian Johnson J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have killed this trilogy and severely damaged the brand. They should be proud of their achievement it takes effort to fuck up this bad. J.J. for having no creativity and reboating ANJ and resetting all of our heroes and the universe to their original states to sate his nostalgia boner. But he did leave potential for future films, there was still hope here
Rian Johnson for taking that hope and just murdering making a nihilistic movie nothing matters. Where our symbol of heroism is turned into an attempted child murderer then killed off. And all of the new heroes are wasted. Making matters worse the film breaks Star Wars lore and ends with such finality that there is no where to go. There are no hooks, nothing to excite fans for the next movie. It’s the film which broke the fanbase and made everyone else disinterested
Then J.J. came back threw everything at the wall hoping something would stick but nothing did. Brought back Palpatine and in so doing made the whole plot of the first six movies irrelevant and pointless ( the final insult to the fans of the old movies) and ended the franchise with a whimper
And Kennedy supervised this mess, letting a trilogy go forward with no story and let two directors give each other a series of metaphorical middle fingers in the forms of their movies negating the ones the other made.
What a hilarious and heartbreaking mess.

64 wknd, 354 cume. Add 5/3 the weekend (Smaug 7/3rds) is 107, for 461M.
Reasonable expectation more along lines of:
26.2
22.5
17.5
66.2 wknd, 356 cume. Add 2x wknd for 488M
F2 vs TROS is back on, I guess.
Hahahahahahaha under AOTC adjusted (even worse since that didn’t have 3D or IMAX) and people are saying these movies are better received than the prequels.

Does she set release dates? You need time to figure out a long-term plan. Let’s not forget THE LAST JEDI was supposed to hit 17 months after THE FORCE AWAKENS.
They bought the thing in 2012 Force Awakens came out three years later they had a bit of time

I will never not be astounded at people complaining about filmmakers prioritizing their movie over just being a setup for future movies.
When you’re in a franchise you have to do that or you risk breaking the whole thing. Directors shouldn’t always be thinking of it but it damn should by a producers number one job so the biggest failure of this trilogy was Kennedy

Counterpoint,
JJ Abrams didn't leave Rian with a clear plan. He also didn't direct it. If he had done either, TLJ might've been not "the most divisive and fan dividing film of all". So, still JJ's fault.
True. But if you say it's Disney's fault, you invite people to run rampant with conspiracy theories. If you say it's Kathleen Kennedy's fault, you invite people to run rampant with sexist complaints. I have zero interest in or time for either. I'm not passing the buck. This is on JJ.
but that is passing the buck this was Kennedy’s responsibility but she allowed it to go to shit. No plan, director who gave each other the middle finger through their films. Firing nearly every director just poorly run.

Black Widow (first Disney MCU after Endgame) and Eternals (Game of Thrones bump) are locked to make $1 billion+.
Anything could happen for Shang-Chi, it depends how those two are received.
Game of thrones bump? How that one actor is in it? Fuck an actual game of thrones movie wouldn’t get a bump after that last season

If the prequesl didn't kill the franchise, then the sequels won't.
The difference is the prequels were at the very least very popular with kids, these aren’t check the merchsdise sales for proof, and were viewed as the end of the franchise there was nothing else coming. Disney is still planning more here

Lol it is delusional to think the franchise is dead.
Really? I said might, but after solo flopped and this semi disaster they have to be very careful or else they could kill it on the big screen. As the OS breaking and decreasing returns domestic in addition to the lack of future legacy characters, who drove almost all of the interest in this trilogy, makes whatever comes next very risky a few more TLJ esque missteps and what happened to terminator could happen here

Agreed, It’s gonna be very tricky.Continuing to please older fans will most likely lead to further decline and diminishing box office returns, but would be the “safer” option, at least initially, while trying something new and fresh could capture the attention of new audiences, especially in emerging market, but it could also completely backfire in that everyone, new and old, rejects that approach.
LF/Disney has some crucial decisions to make.
The older fans aren’t that hard to please especially since the baggage of the old characters has already been shot dead. The biggest complaints they had was how those characters were treated so poorly. With no legacy characters that makes it easier. Rogue one proves that and so does the Mandalorian

Sorry, that probably came off harsher than I intended. I mentioned it because I have found a high correlation with someone's rating of those two movies and how much I disagree with them about Star Wars in general.
I mean the Star Wars you like might have killed the franchise and definitely killed this trilogy so....

BOT's overreacting is really out of this world. Smaller second weekend than expected, yet probably still bigger than TLJ's -> "iT wOn'T eVeN rEaCh oNe BiLlIoN"
If it does 485 which Charlie said was a possibility and with the way it’s collapsing overseas under a billion is a possibility. But is 1.02 that much better for TLJ I mean really it’s still a major disappointment. A JL esque catastrophe

If we think a little, we can find a lot of similarities between Justice League and TROS's run:
1. Both movies were sequels to badly received movies.
2. Both movies got bad reviews from critic.
3. Both movies had biased fans claiming they would have MUCH better WOM than the previous movie, because it wasn't 'dark/complex'. At the end of day, WOM was almost equal.
4. Both movies suffered a huge drop from its predecessor.
5. Both movies that, were once seen as an Event of a generation ended as a wimpier.
Let's see if the SW brand can recover from it like DCU did with Aquaman.
Although, I really, REALLY doubt SW will be ever able to produce a product that has such a huge OS appeal like AQMN, lmfao.Oh, and in both cases we had Deadline embarrassing themself, trying to convince us that both movies were doing fine, but I'm not including this since Deadline is always an embarrassing.
