  1. My big fat greek wedding was something very incredible. You have to remember that this was at the time where a frontloaded movie was still getting a 3.0 multiplier... MBFGW never recorded a week-end over 20M and it broke 200M in total over 6 months.

Shrek 2 was an oddity...everyone was thinking that it would break out real big and it went DOA on its Wednesday opening...People were in "What went wrong" mode and trying to figure out what the F happened for it to open that low until we saw its Friday number and it went on to record the 2nd biggest OW ever at the time (with some demands burned off).

Watching Avatar's progress was nice. Everyone kept saying : this is the Week-end it's gonna drop normally and it would drop 20-25% and we would all say the same thing for the next week-end...Even after the 2nd week-end I was thinking it would end up between TDK and Titanic...never thought it would reach 750M.

Not a big fan of Frozen, but from a numbers point of view, the box office run and DVD/Blu Ray run was incredible.

I also think any sequels that opens over the entire run of the original movie is something impressive (Austin Powers, Terminator, Pitch Perfect...etc...)

I was totally in that what went wrong mode when I saw Shrek 2 on Wednesday and there was only like 15 other people in my theater other then my group. I was so shocked to see the weekend numbers.

  2. Oh wow, I thought he was a bit older. I was 7 for JP1 and that's a really good age for this kind of thing.

I was 5 when I first saw JP and I loved it! Drug my parents to the theaters to see LW when I was 7. I was so excited for LW. I loved movies from a really young age, even ones not meant for kids so young. I was kinda strange like that. My favorite movie when I was 8 was Titanic and I saw that movie in theaters 5 times.

  3. Verbinski made, Rango and Dead Man's Chest. Both far more intelligent films than any of the Jurassic Park films which have gotten by on being “dumb fun" (dumb fun is not necessarily a bad thing though)

DMC is not very intelligent. Black Pearl is far more intelligent. And the first Jurassic Park is better made than any Verbinski film IMO. I do LOVE The Ring though.

  4. I remain in awe of Titanic's $600 million gross as it completely obliterated anything that had come before it.

Even using the word obliterate to describe the box-office records Titanic smashed seems like an understatement.

For the movie to not only gross over $400, $450, $500, $525, $550, $575, $600 million during an initial run when the nearest total gross for a movie during an initial run was about $250 million less is mind-blowing.

There was a time I questioned whether it would ever be beaten. Granted I was young then and didn't fully understand inflation, nor could have predicted 3D.

  5. And I have to say, I'm getting the feeling JW will cross the $600m mark by the time it's done. It's a fun crowd pleaser that is enjoyable to re watch and it still has two more weekends before direct competition from Terminator (which I can't see making much more than $50m max OW). Also, the "biggest opening" buzz will surely up the curiosity factor for those who were more hesitant to go see the movie.

  6. Godzilla to date is the biggest turnaround I've had one a movie. Saw it twice in one week--the first time I was totally apathetic, the second time I saw what it was trying to do and had a completely different read on the film. No idea how it happened but I really like that movie.

I wonder if that could happen for me. I was SO excited for the movie but ended up only seeing it once. I tried to convince myself after the experience that it was at least pretty good but the more time that passed the more I seemed to dislike the movie and be annoyed by a lot of it.

  7. Watched a haunted house movie called We Are Still Here, starring horror icon Barbara Crampton. Decent stuff. Old school slow burn, but not particularly scary or original. I'd recommend The House of the Devil instead.

    6.5/10

    I like the poster

  8. The infamous 50 Shades weekend, with it beating Star Wars's OW (thanks CJohn for ramping up expectations to an unrealistic degree)

I will admit, my expectations (especially after the fandango stats came out) became unrealistic as well. But $100 3-day was still doable. It made it to $87m, just needed a little push. Maybe more peen shots could have got the wom to increase just enough to get it there.

  9. Just watch next week when it actually opens to 180M, only Nova will be laughing at that time. :P

I'd love for that to happen. 2015 was supposed to be major! And so far it's been pretty good, but it could use some more surprise hits to give it that little push that it needs. Then we just need MJ2 to make over $165m and Star Wars to make over $180m which for a late December release would be ridonkulous and would guarantee it the top spot for the year by a healthy margin!

  10. I think Spy will cross $30m for the weekend. Disappointing still as I predicted at least $40m'ish. Insidious 3 should have made at least $30m'ish since I2 crossed $40m. And Entourage honestly made about what I was expecting. So overall, sad weekend. I plan on seeing Spy tonight. Everything I've heard has me excited for it. Hopefully it has good legs and can leg it's way a decent amount past $100m.
