    BOM says Tintin's first day gross was $2.3M but shows its total on its first day as $5.6M, maybe they had previews? 

    anyway, if that $3.3M was from previews its 6-day total of $23.1M would be revised as $19.8M, and a x8.6 OD/6-day multi, $86M~$103M for Sing. still compelling numbers.

    oh yeah, no doubt in that. Movies from those years that had Christmas falling on a Sunday never had a multi lower than 3.2 to their 6-day numbers and it could go up to 4 at times.

    applying that to Sing's projected $70m 6-day it could land anywhere near $225m~$280m. it has contradicting two factors going on for forecasting the multi. when the movies open bigger, the multiplier gets smaller, yet, family releases tend to have a greater staying power, so.. for now I'll give it a 3.6/$250m.

    but when it comes to originality there are not many live-action films that are truly innovative and original, either. 

    think it comes down to the approach, whether the filmmakers' main interest is to make a good movie that they believe is, or to make a movie that sells well to the audience which is not necessarily related to the creators' visions. Sometimes it could be both and it can't be black or white tho.

    yeah this part kinda made me contemplate too, this would bring us to certain complicated topics like if the quality of arts can truly be measured or if the idea that "well-made" movies should be more rewarded by financial success makes sense or if we need to support and protect indie arthouse films from washed out of the market or not, yada yada..

    Sing's RT score is slightly dropping again. now at 70%.

    I was mildly excited and mostly curious when its first TIFF reactions were out, and now I've been thinking about what that Indiewire critic said the other day how Illumination is lowering the standard and expectations for animated films and I get what he means. Their formulas are working a little too well for them, which is both a blessing and a curse.

     

    Illumination is not a follower anymore and in fact it is the leading studio of the market now with the highest gross average, and their decidedly cost-effective approach to filmmaking could drive other studios to follow the similar steps. People are more willingly giving them a free pass than they are to Pixar (some might counter-argue this point) because their target audience is much younger and they are pandering to them so well, but it spawns the idea that kids movies don't deserve that same artistic integrity in their narratives or aesthetics and are okay to be seen as a complete product. 

    I feel somewhat cautious saying this as a Disney/Pixar fan that it would come off as obnoxious or double standards but I do feel it'd be good if Illumination steps out of their comfort zone and try something different once in a while, making something that is more than "it's fun and kids love it", at least raising the budget a bit (cause they can totally afford it) and developing a new rendering tool and experiment with their looks or something. Cause otherwise their movies would be the same a decade from now.

    IO and Zootopia are the distant top 2 of the 2010s' for me. I'd give IO a slight edge over Zoo. Zoo's obviously clever and fun but a bit in your face about its social commentary which is still nice but I think it could've been a little more delicately done and it would not age as well as IO.

    out of the article, I like that they point out the previews getting not as much locations as during official release. I can imagine that not everyone reading here, especially the newer ones or guests, are aware about that

     

    yeah, I honestly don't think previews mean that much when it comes to animated entries. after all, Frozen's was $1.2M and its five-day was $93M.

    having said that, Sing's number is on par with Zootopia ($1.7M) but lower than most of the other animated releases in the past 2 years. Maybe it's a furry thing. ;)

    great Sunday/weekend hold for Moana. Are kids out of school in the US starting this Monday? it would have more decent weekdays than usual till the Leviathan arrives on Wednesday.
