  1. I know the conversation about Conan ended two pages back, but what is interesting is that while the manga and TV series have not retained their popularity from the heights of the late 90s/early 00s, the annual films continue to do very well. In fact, last year's Conan film was the highest grossing in the entire series! And if you count Lupin III VS Conan from the end of last year, well, that outgrossed every single Lupin and Conan film to date!

As stale as the main series (manga, TV series) has become, with massive loss of interest over the years, for some reason people keep flocking to the movies. I wouldn't be surprised if they are continuing the series solely to keep making movies or something silly like that. I mean, that series has been going nowhere for a long time.

It's interesting that a lot of the animated films based on long running TV series are doing so well lately.  The most recent ONE PIECE became the highest-grossing film in the series by far, and last year's entry of Doraemon is also the highest-grossing film in the series since the late 90s.

Welcome to the forums :) I can't speak much to Japanese movie trends since I'm not really familiar with these franchises but I agree that the recent upswing in theatrical attendance is very interesting given the stagnant state of the manga.

  2. The overall selection is pretty good. The order is pretty iffy.

I question anything that rates Fantastic Mr. Fox so high. It's a cute little film, but hardly that brilliant.

The order is pretty terrible and the overall selection is only passable imo. Shrek, Shrek 2, Hercules, Mulan and The Prince of Egypt don't even make the top 100? That's just ridiculous especially when films like Kung Fu Panda and the 70s LOTR made the cut...

  3. Yet it's a connection even the filmmakers seem willing to concede, since HCA and his "Snow Queen" story are given credit. There's no reference or credit given to Shakespeare in TLK.

I could be wrong but aren't Shakespeare's works public domain now? I doubt there was any sort of legal repercussions possible for a 16th century play influencing a motion picture and maybe Disney wanted to avoid the general perception that it was an adaptation for the casual viewer. Frozen isn't original either but the setting and some characters more closely mirror the more recent source material so it would have been difficult to shed the association even if the plot was almost completely different. That'd be my guess at any rate.

  4. Interesting list. Couple of nits, though:

FROZEN is loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales.

JURASSIC PARK and JAWS were best-selling books before the movie.

FORREST GUMP was also based on a book.

At a certain point it becomes semantics on what constitutes an "orignal" work. The Lion King was loosely based on Hamlet for example and followed that story line more closely than Frozen followed the Snow Queen's plot.

  5. I never heard of this. I looked it up and now I know why. An internet video? Isn't that like voting for a made for TV movie? Actually, I think it's worse because it's an internet video. I don't make up the rules, but this is a head scratcher. The fact that people voted for it makes me feel bad for all the great musicals that have been made throughout the history of cinema that won't make this list.

    But... NPH

  6. Agree with me? Im one of the few that's close to right on this run and im underestimating. I dont mind someone elses opinion if theyre right once in a while. But most are way off base and keep slinging shit.

You may be sick of hearing this, but I think I can safely say that most people here (at least on the two Frozen threads) would much rather underpredict by a wide margin and be pleasantly surprised when it does well rather than be disappointed that a movie that they love failed to live up to their bold box office expectations. I would put more stock in a logical analysis of a movie like this if I had no dog in the fight so to speak but as it is I'm fine grossly missing the mark in my Frozen prediction. You have said that you have no personal opinion on the film itself so it would make sense for you to have perhaps the most realistic look at things, and I for one couldn't care less if I "sling shit" and wind up being proven dead wrong in this particular instance beacuse I just want to see Frozen do as well as possible. This is a box office forum but in most cases there are no prizes that go to the closest estimation so for me at least it's more about enjoying the tracking of the movie I like but you clearly strive for the best guess and if that's what you care about then more power to you. Obviously your generous predictions have been much more accurate than most to this point and many Frozenites are perfectly happy to concede :)

  7. Hunchback is excellent. It's soundtrack alone should guarantee it doesn't get any votes as worst.

The worst is Hercules. The animation is crap, the characters (minus Hades) are crap, and the songs and music are crap.

I'm all for Hunchback getting some credit since it always seems to be overlooked. Some scenes are rather dark for a kid's movie (especially "Hellfire" ) but damn is it powerful. That said I completely disagree about your assessment of Hercules. It's one of my favorites but even if it wasn't and I did think it was the worst of that decade I still wouldn't call it crap. The great thing about this topic for me is that it isn't about choosing a bad movie more than it is determining which entry is the weakest relative to an incredibly strong field of contenders.  For example Pocahontas is clearly last in my book but it still had a good soundtrack imo and overall it still isn't bad.

  8. I can't believe all of this hate for Hercules! James Woods is amazing as Hades as is Danny Devito as Philotetes and the story, while not accurate to the Greek myth, is still one of Disney's strongest. Some of the songs are meh but Go the Distance and I Won't Say I'm in Love are both really good. The only reason it's not near the top of this era is because of the sheer strength of the field and BatB and TLK are some of if not, the, greatest animations ever but Hercules still cracks my top 5. Definitely better than Pocahontas that's for sure.

  9. 大高宏雄 @Hiroo_Otakaその「アナと雪の女王」だが、4月26日から3Dの日本语吹替版の公开が始まる。全国で、150スクリンを超える规模になるとのこと

My god ! This message says Frozen Dubbed 3D version

will screen beginning April 26th  on 150 screens all over Japan...

If this succeeds, Frozen can defeat any competitor in GW.

Awesome! It sounded like the biggest potential issue in the coming weeks for Frozen's sustained success was going to be keeping screens but this certainly helps with that  :)

  10. The show hasn't done him justice at all so far other than a handful of good scenes.

They did at least make him a bad ass in the show's version of Blackwater. First man on the ladder to take King's Landing and he was wrecking those City Watch guys once he made it on the wall. But yeah as a whole HBO has basically made it seem like Stannis is just Melisandre's puppet and while she does exert a good amount of influence on him in the the books he is still clearly the one wearing the pants in the relationship.

  11. To the contrary, he makes the movies better than the book. Have you read Hobbit recently? It has its charms but it's fluffy, childish, with bland characters. I don't blame Tolkien, he wrote that book for his children but i prefer what PJ is doing. Not that the movies aren't without fault.

I'm not denying PJ did a helluva job with the original trilogy but for the hobbit as a stand alone children's book (which was intended as a comparatively simpler tale to that of LOTR) is far superior to the bloated CGI mess he has made with this current trilogy.

imo for the universe of Middle-Earth it goes:

LOTR (films) > Silmarillion (book) > Hobbit (book) > LOTR (books) >>>>>> Hobbit (films)

  12. Amen FM.. Thor was great , but something about CA1 really made it seem more special.

Thats all the director and Chris Evans acting abilitiy..

AAnd my god is Thor light years behind Captain America in quality right now..

CACA 2 is up there with SM2  and TDK and Avengers in quality. :)

WWow. Thor needs to up the game to catch up.

The Dark World wasn't as good as The Winter Soldier but I still found it to be entertaining.

  13. I actually like both movies. Not only that, but I find the Da Vinci Code to be the better movie.

Go figure. Well Da Vinci has its moments I suppose and anything with Sir Ian Mckellan in it can't be all bad so I'll retract the train-wreck statement    But still for me I much prefer A&Ds although I also thought that the book was far superior so maybe it's just the overall story I enjoyed more rather than the actual execution of the film adaptation.

  14. Yep I loved them, I mean they were less good than the LOTR but still awesome.... I mean did you saw the HungerGames? Wtf I loved the book but those movies even my brother of 2 had done it better than those... "Whatever they are...." But like i said the books were awesome!!!!! I specially liked the hunting parts in the book, the survival of the strongest but in the film the only thing we got to see is Last airbender stuff.... Just my opinion, i know lots will disagree with me but I am just a human and humans can make mistakes, lots of mistakes.... XD

Don't take it personaly plz, It is just I don't like the HG movies :(

Sad to say but I much prefer Catching Fire over either Hobbit movie. Why did PJ have to screw up the book so much!
