  1. There is too much speculation here about China box office overtaking Hollywood as a whole, so I'd like to bring things back to where they are at currently. I don't deny the fact that China box office will continue to increase but for it to make more than Hollywood collectively is not something I expect at this point. You can also not predict the economic condition of a country for that kind of time period (remember that the GDP growth of China was really in the past decade). Even if it may happen it won't be in the next decade, and to make things worse, by then the Chinese studios will catch up to get a better hold of their movie market share by producing more quality films at par with Hollywood in terms of graphics so a lot of the Chinese audience may be diverted to local movies. Ofcourse the local movies+hollywood boxoffice in China may exceed USA boxoffice in the next decade if their economic conditions are stable. For now, instead of speculations we should go by what the actual figures are currently. A true comparision can only be made on a yearly basis which includes the combined gross of all Hollywood movies in China.
  2. Avatar 3 and 4 will drop crazily but I think Avatar 2 has a good chance of making $3 billion. Eventhough many markets are seeing a decline in 3D sales, the demand for Avatar 2 coming after 7 years of waiting will suffice for a healthy box office run.
  3. Avatar made $2.8 billion. If Avatar 2 is just as good, it should make $3 billion
  4. Total USA/Canada box office in 2013 is $10.923 billion What was the total China Box office in 2013 for Hollywood ? I understand that Chinese government doesn't let a lot of Hollywood movies to release there but all the major movies make their way.
  5. With this week included, Disney has held on to the #1 box office spot in Japan for 19 consecutive weekends (36% of 2014)
  6. Wow ... I feel like this was planned on purpose because of Frozen. Why else would they wait this long and choose this time out of no where. Anyway, since the movie is 12 years old I doubt if it would sell more than 100,000. What are the pre-orders looking like?
  7. Just when we thought we are done with Frozen, it continues to break more records and surprise everyone. Please keep us updated when you find out the DVD Sales. I want Frozen to completely obliterate the Spirited Away records in Home Video. I know it already did it in the number of Blu-rays sold but it should beat the overall (DVD+Blu-ray) number too soon. VHS can be excluded from this number as it doesn't exist now but if you have to include VHS number in the total, then lets just say the digital sales can account for the VHS count. This way the total DVD+Blu-ray+Digital will exceed 4.1 million at some point. Spirited Away - DVD+Blu-ray+VHS sales = 4.1 million Frozen - Blu-ray Sales = 1.046 million Frozen DVD and Digital sales are unknown currently. Digital sales were in the millions but we do not have an actual number as the data has to be obtained from various sources offering the movie digitally.
  8. The amazing success in China would only mean that TF5 will have more of China than TF4 did. So with that perspective, Paramount might as well let a Chinese studio do the whole movie and take royalties. They can sell rights to Chinese Studio to make Transformers movies as often as they like with 30% of profits going to Paramount. China will likely make the sequels at a faster rate than Hollywood although at a lower budget but more suitable to the Chinese audience. Hollywood can still release its major versions of the movie for worldwide audience but their releases will take a lot of time as usual. The next Transformers movie may not be for another 4 to 5 years.
  9. True, make the Chinese do all the work and USA should totally benefit from it Like how Apple Iphones are made in China with a manufacturing cost of $200, only to sell it for $800 in USA and probably higher prices in other parts of the world including China. Just so that Apple can have a profit of $40 billion per year.
  10. Three weeks performance isn't much of a leg for TF4. It is still front loaded box office as expected. Think of what it made in the first week of its run versus its total box office. The 20 week box office of Frozen in Japan can be referred to having the legs. Even the USA performance of Frozen was impressive for being in top 5 consecutively for 11 weeks adn top 10 consecutively for 16 weeks. It was over a decade ago a movie did this in USA.
  11. I am not saying I don't like them. The fact that I watched 5 Ghibli movies (I am not Japanese), shows that I watched them for the story. All I am saying is that if the Japanese studios can make a lot of money from their movies they should make them with graphics at par with Disney. They can even have better luck of releasing the movie in USA and actually making some money. Look at Spirited Away. It was an excellent movie and also won the academy award but only made $10 million in USA (which is a flop). Wind rises made only $5 million. It was fine to make Lion King the way it was 20 years ago but if you make a sequel now Disney will not choose the same graphics technology.
  12. So I guess it is finally at $300 million now Might as well have a Chinese Studio make TF5 without Bay ofcourse. Transformers is clearly way more popular in China than in the USA.
  13. I watched at least five Ghibli movies and they were not with the current graphics technology in animation. Wind Rises looks like: General Disney/Pixar animated movies look like: I came across a horror fan made trailer for Frozen...seemed cool:
  14. I see anime as low budget 2D Cartoon so I can't watch them. It seems like they are a step behind in technology. Would Japan's economy not be able to justify the expenses of animated movies with the quality of Pixar/Disney graphics.
  15. Is Frozen confirmed to be no higher than 4th place this weekend ?
  16. We will see how it performs this weekend then to see if the logic above holds. With losing 40% of the screens Frozen can decrease by upto 40%. Any hold of a drop below 20% will be impressive at this point in run.
  17. Is it possible that Disney advertised the movie more this past week to avoid a drop at box office. How the hell is Frozen doing better than last week when there are millions of DVD/Blu-ray/Digital sales breaking crazy records on all home video formats. Yes, but it should drop further when the actual release happens. I guess the summer holidays started improving the box office already
  18. This is amazing. Over 1 million Blu-ray sales ($ 40 to $50 million) in Japan is possible. How good are the DVD Sales ? There are chances for Frozen to be the highest sold Blu-ray Worldwide. It is currently at #2 in USA and will beat Avatar by the end of the year to claim #1 spot. USA Sales: http://www.the-numbers.com/alltime-bluray-sales-chart Amazon USA reviews (10k+): http://www.amazon.com/Frozen-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-Digital-Copy/dp/B00G5G7K7O/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1405559801&sr=1-1&keywords=frozen
  19. Disney has held on to the #1 box office spot in Japan for 18 consecutive weekends (over 1/3 of 2014 ... very impressive) When was the last time a studio had this record ? When will Maleficent be beaten and which movie will do it ? Does anyone think Frozen still has a chance at breaking $250 million ?
  20. It was easy to predict that TF4 will make a billion dollars or more based on its first week box office. The only down side is that it will make about $100 million less in USA that TF3 did, however China alone took care of that difference and with the obvious increases expected from most international markets TF4 may close over $1.1 billion which would unfortunately put it in the best top ten movies of all time worldwide.
  21. I think it will beat Avatar Blu-rays sold by end of 2014. Also, I don't recall ever seeing any Blu-ray on Amazon having over 10,000 reviews. http://www.amazon.com/Frozen-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-Digital-Copy/dp/B00G5G7K7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405225661&sr=8-1&keywords=frozen+bluray
  22. Does this meen that there will be an increase in box office next weekend or a very small decline ? Its hard to predict Japanese box office and I have no clue on how summer holidays affect the older movies already in theaters.
  23. Good analysis. With the perspective of where people only watch 1 movie in a year in theaters it would make sense for them to watch something that they enjoy regardless of the story. I watch at least 20 movies in theater per year (and a lot more at home), so I would naturally be picky with my likes and dislikes. For example, I thought 22 Jump Street was crap but it still made over $160 million in USA. I watched TF4 in IMAX 3D for $20 a ticket with a family of 4, so I contributed $80 at the box office.
  24. I am not hating TF4. In fact I would rate it close to 6/10. My comment is inclined towards having only movies with reasonably decent story in the top 10 box office chart of a country which does not happen with China. Similar response was made in the Japan box office thread where some people didn't want Frozen to beat Spirited Away because to them SA was better than Frozen. And if they can wish such a thing with a movie as good as Frozen then I have done nothing wrong to wish that TF4 doesn't end up making $300 million in China. Whether it will happen or not is irrelevant for me to express my opinions.
  25. I am aware that the Japanese population is actually decreasing over the past decade or so, and who the hell doesn't know about the Chinese population. I was just indirectly trying to find from Rudolf the reason why Japan has not had an increase in the number of theaters as his comment is implying that the Japanese always have to wait in the line to watch movies due to very few theaters. Population may be decreasing but at the same time more people may want to watch movies. Even in China, the rate of increase of revenue from movies is much higher than the rate of population increase. So your sarcastic answer was unnecessary, as population is not a major factor to drive the box office. (Take India for example, hollywood box office is probably less than 10% compared to local movies. The movie ticket price is so cheap that it has no chance of making much $$$ even if it has millions of people watching it. Indians could watch a movie in a theater for less than $1. I don't need to remind you that India will overtake the Chinese population by 2025 but it will not have a significant affect on the box office due to other factors.)
