This all coincides with the downfall of Marvel...

While I don’t disagree with some of the negativity of posters like @Cmasterclay (and I’m not saying negativity like it’s a bad thing), I do think that the box office, and audiences themselves, simply is in a state of transition. The Marvel dominance is coming to an end, and we are in this transition period before another franchise or genre fills the now-open niche.

The 2000’s were when CGI finally caught up to fantasy storytelling, and you had big blockbuster franchises emerging from that. The 2010s was the proliferation and continuation of those franchises with endless sequels and reboots. But now since the pandemic, those franchises are mostly played out. Audiences need something else, and Hollywood hasn’t quite caught up yet (makes sense since movies do admittedly take years to make). I do hope we are going back to a 1990s era where prestige filmmakers get to make high-concept films with big budgets, and in doing so bring in big box office and awards. But we’ll see how the next few years go.

Just for fun I took a smattering of movies from 2014, which btw at the time was considered a weak year at the box office.

    Neighbors did 150m.

    Lucy did 126m.

    Noah did 101m.

    Non-Stop did 92m.

    The Imitation Game did 91m.

    Fury did 85m.

    The Other Woman did 83m.

The Grand Budapest Hotel did 59m.

    No Good Deed did 52m.

Look at those totals. Come on folks. You guys know none of those movies would have done even 25m domestic today except maybe Neighbors, which would have gone straight to Apple like Rogen's recent films, and maybe Budapest because Wes Power. And when they flopped, you know what people would have posted - "oh, of course a movie with those reviews/length/concept/stars flopped, they always would have!" But the fact is, they didn't always. Not remotely. And people who have been on these boards awhile just know that to be true. Which is why I think the Clays and CJohns and others of the world are more negative.

We really did have it good in 2014. Looking back a decade later, it might be my favourite year movie-wise since I started “getting into movies” in 2012.

That's a fine opinion to have but I think it's a little interesting how the narrative of "screwed over Pixar movies" generally overlooks Onward.

I ultimately think in a non-COVID world Onward, Luca, and Turning Red would be in the $200 m Dom area. Dunno about Soul though. I've heard takes that Soul would have been another Inside Out and I really don't know about that...

Also in real life Luca and TR could have been successes.

Luca and TR have very dedicated core fans, and I think they would have done decently in non-Covid environments (although I think they would have grossed closer to Elemental domestically). Soul is a great movie but I really have my doubts it could have been another Inside Out. It’s almost “too” adult and I don’t think families would have bought into it.

Interesting that you saw stronger sales in ypur area. I've been underindexing huge in mine. I assumed it might have been a Canadian thing, but it might just be local.

What's the March Break situation on your side? Were schools closed this week or last week?

This week Spring Break. I took that into account when looking at my Thursday ratios.

*Cersey Lannister voice* power is power (just amazed that you can reach out to the head office of a major theater chain :))

Any snow storming in Canada tonight? We're getting hit in Minnesota, not terrible but definitely enough to stave off some walk-ups

Hahaha one of my best friends works in their head office :)

And nothing where I am at least snow-wise (although I’m on the west coast). Not sure about the other provinces.

MTC4 system is down, which will nuke any walk-ups for Canada.

This happened a few weeks ago and the only purchase option was cash sales on site. You can't buy through the app or website right now.

Last time it was down, it was an hour or so. That's going to run right into early evening start times.

Hahaha don’t worry I contacted some friends at head office of the company. A few emails had been sent out already, but it’s back up and running ;)

Anyways, walkups pretty bad for Ghostbusters tonight. But pre-sales were pretty strong, so I’d say that 4-4.5M is still possible. But I’d likely rule out 40+ for the weekend if walkups continue at this pace.

  7. I feel like, with some exceptions (Eric and Timothy, 13 year old boys and Sydney Sweeney, dedicated “fandoms” which themselves don’t constitute a huge portion of the moviegoing public) actors are less draws themselves and it’s more of a “actor + role” type of thing.

Margot Robbie AS Barbie. Tom Cruise AS Maverick (let’s be honest, random Cruise military movie wouldn’t have made 700M nor would a Cruise-less Top Gun). Gosling’s follow up to Barbie wouldn’t be predicted as this massive breakout the way Fall Guy is if the role wasn’t what people were looking for from him (essentially, the Ken-ification of Gosling).

    Oh dear!

Not to minimize it but, how is this Variety-level news? I worked at various movie theaters for 7 years altogether, and I’ve personally seen well over two dozen instances of “lewd sexual behaviour.” Heck, I have a successful tiktok account because of it.

Not to mention I’ve seen a lot worse (one instance where a customer assaulted another random customer by pulling her shirt off and held her “hostage” until the police arrived)… all because he didn’t want to wear a mask.

Now again, I’m not minimizing it. But this happens ALL the time. Have you ever been to a sold-out movie before. Odds are SOMEONE in there was probably getting themself off in there.

I’ve seen it. It’s good, but in that “your standard British biopic” kind of way. Hopkins is good, but I don’t think anything in the film is as powerful as the real TV clip it’s based on.

Side note, I showed my students in Social Studies 10 the real Winton clip last year before I knew this movie was a thing. For any schoolteachers out there, this is a pretty good WW2 film to show a class.

Anyways, back to box office lol.

Holds for this have been insane. If it follows Panda 3 from this point on, it finishes with 215M+. Now, I don’t think it’s going to keep up with that movie, but 200 doesn’t seem THAT far fetched right now.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is reminding me of Shazam 2 where you can really feel the apathy towards it in the air, especially following a pair of overperformers. The reviews will likely be of no help as well, given how long they're holding the embargo.

I made a tiktok back in January talking about what I think the big box office flops of 2024 will be. I was on the money with Argylle, and next on my hit-list was Frozen Empire. Sony better watch out

Movie is gonna be a hit, still see a ton of memes about the log one.

Log scene was filmed about 2 minutes away from where I grew up. Actually on my route driving to school.

I’ll tell ya, I thought about it every single day. We all did, especially whenever we were behind a logging truck.

  13. Emma Stone only needs 1 more Oscar to match Dormand/Streep. Which she will definitely get someday. Honestly amazing for her, she’s truly a great actress.

Also, while I may have personally voted for I’m Just Ken, I’m so happy What Was I Made For won. The effect that song has on many of the women in my life, especially my younger sister who typically does not like movies and finds it difficult to connect with them, warms my heart, and I’m so happy that she has this to celebrate.
