Whedon really does deserve a lot of the blame though. His fingerprints are all over the film and critics SHIT ON IT.  Which means they shit in part on Whedon.

I'm not sure that'd be the case.  I don't personally care for a lot of Whedon's work (he's especially bad writing women or people who aren't white guys in general) but reviews were just as bad with Snyder's films and at the very least the positive aspect of most of the reviews is that the tone is lighter or more fun in these than in the previous two Snyder directed movies).  The individual character personalities fact that it's 'fun' is apparently the only saving grace with most critics and likely will be with the audience too.

How tomorrow looks at my theater:

      Reveal hidden contents

    JL: 251/1,791

    Wonder: 100/390

    OE: 37/486

    DH212/491

    The Star: 10/468

    Thor: 6/423

    Bad Moms: 4/360

    Madea: 2/78

Goddamn, JL looks fucking pitiful during the day. The total day is running at 84% of Thor, but when you narrow it down to showings before 7 PM, it's only at 54% of Thor. Fucking hell.

Wonder is a fucking BEAST. This is at 133% of OE and 233% of DH2

The Star is 45% of Ninjago and 67% of MLP. I don't know if I should bump my 5M prediction up 1 or 2M.

Go, Wonder!  You can do this!

Mexican pre-colombine cultures celebrated some ritual to their deceased (as probably any single culture around the globe) and that was in august, during the harvesting time. After spaniards arrived, that "dead commemoration" was moved to 1st Nov but local cultures aspects remained to get a particular local event of the catholic commemoration of All Saints' Day (or Dia de Todos los Santos, which is the general given name).

1st Nov is the stipulated official day for All Saint's Day in big part of christian churches (catholics, anglicans, protestants ... only Eastern Orthodox Churches in Europe commemorate different times of the year for their dead, and not in nov.). It's true that this christian celebration is not as big/spread as Christmas or Passion Week.

In fact, the christian celebration covers two days: Nov 1st as All Saints' Day (which is a more festive and celebrating), and Nov 2nd as All Souls' Day or Faithful Departed's Day (which is a more praying and mourning day).

Yeah, sure, spaniards were pure evil ... though mexican precolombine tribes used to cannibalize and exterminate themselves (without any external help) with extreme savage rituals ... yeah, very good. They lived in heaven before Spaniards landed (also Portugal France and Netherlands landed). Maybe you would have preferred the british to land before, and get your local cultures and people preserved today in tiny "fenced" reserves as in a zoo, as happens in north america, right?

Go to "british america" and tell me how many indian-like people you see in the street, in the government, leading companies... and then go to any "spanish-portuguese america" and tell me how many indian-like people you see.

As per Coco, i'm very happy it's the biggest movie ever in Mexico, and i keep saying (and hoping) it gets a successful ww run, as good as InsideOut did ( around $800M+)

That doesn't change that All Saints Day isn't the same as Dia de Muerto in most Catholic countries.  The idea that Catholics would automatically embrace it just because it incorporates some aspects of a Catholic celebration (and it is functionally very different in both appearance and in other details) is not necessarily true.  A lot of non-Mexican Christians I know are baffled by dia de muertos traditions, especially the altar and the idea of skulls as decoration.  Obviously they don't consider it the same as their 'Christian' holidays.

Which is not to say I don't hope Coco will do well. I hope like hell it does because the mexican-american population is high but media catering to us is low.  I just don't know that some vague (to the masses) connection to a Catholic/Christian celebration will have any real boost.  Tbh it probably gets more boost from people who confuse it with Halloween.

Actually some mexican cultures did celebrations to their dear deads even before Spain took the country and gave end to most of civilizations.

    In other news

Yes.  I don't disagree.  That's the aspect that Mexicans bring to Dia de Muertos.  It was celebrated at a different time of year and for a longer span before Catholicism came to Mexico.

They have in common their past being spanish colonies till 19th century. And Dia de los Muertos is a christian tradition that somehow has become very popular in its mexican expression, but it's celebrated in christianity all around the globe.

That's why i keep insisting in saying that Coco will have a very good box office life. Some see Coco as a latin movie that will not interest european or northamerican or asian people. But the point is that it will interest to christians, besides anyone interested in Pixar + anyone interested in Disney + anyone interested in good animation quality movies ... I think it's gonna have a very long and good run.

Dia de los Muertos is not a Christian event.  It is the result of Catholicism trying to overwrite native Central American culture and the way that Mexicans adapted SOME of the aspects to themselves rather than simply taking them as the Spanish intended them to.  In fact most Christians (and Catholics) in America who aren't of Mexican/Latino origin don't regard Dia de los Muertos fondly or even think about it at all.

There really isn't much in between for most Christian films I've seen. I either love it (Prince of Egypt, Hacksaw Ridge) or hate it (God's Not Dead 1 and 2, Saving Christmas). It's a pretty big split.

Basically, telling a good story is always the thing I look for when grading a film. I'm not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination (I am a deist) but I love films that can include good morals/messages if they are done exceptionally well.

But please do keep in mind that Prince of Egypt is not specifically Christian.  The creator and many of the creative team are Jewish and it reflects that.   Jeffrey Katzenberg is Jewish and it was one of his motivations for the film.  Also one of my Jewish friends watches this movie every passover.

I think it's just safe to say that when it comes to movies based on the Old Testament, that most of them can be enjoyed as much (or more) by Jewish audiences.

Worth noting that Muslims share most of this as well, but their rules against prophets being portrayed visually means this movie wouldn't be particularly popular in most Muslim countries.

Had another studio made this or Sony made more of an effort both marketing, storytelling and animation wise this would’ve been a nice little hit. As a Christian, although most faith films do much for me, I would have liked an animated Nativity movie to do well ala Prince of Egypt. However The Star looks like garbage and the reviews although positive aren’t from top critics.

The Prince of Egypt was very well put together.  One of the best efforts to come from Dreamworks and one of their earliest.

  8. This is gonna benefit from the fact that there will be a lot of publications who are way too focused on JL to review before this comes out.  Not that I think it will help this film much.  I see better animation coming from a lot of direct to DVD/Direct to Netflix series recently.  The days when big companies could easily get by with shoddy animation is over.

    24M OW

    120M DOM

Tremblay gets nominated at the Globes at least for Best Actor.

All three of these should happen. If it was a better distributor than Lionsgate, I'd say they're all locked.

I really hope this is the case.  I'm betting this will have good legs, especially given the popularity of the book and the absence of a lot of family competition through the holiday season (the Star looks like it'll be pretty low and has a premise similar to a lot of the TV holiday fare that plays every year, Coco has good reviews but even if it makes a lot, I don't think it'll be enough to hold over family audiences the entire season and Ferdinand... not sure... the later trailers aren't very good and I haven't been hearing a lot of buzz about it).  I think Wonder will leg it out for a while, but I'm really hoping for a 20M+ OW.  It might get a boost from JL overrun.

But it is like a majority of the population unfortunately takes the story for granted.

Can't "take it for granted" if you're from another religion.  You have to deal with it being shoved in your face for two months regardless of whether or not you believe in it.

That's exactly the point! This is a story that people need to hear- or, at least, be reminded of.

Because there's NOTHING that reminds us of this story ever.  Because we know how much most Christmas songs on the radio aren't about pretty much this.  It's not like we can go out in public and find decorations of baby Jesus.  It's not like most Christmas films for kids ever touch on this theme.

I kinda feel that the director was arrested and did his time for the crimes, from what we know he hasn't done anything since. I'm more concerned about the people in Hollywood who have done this kind of thing and never been caught. Corey Feldman said the man that raped Corey Haim is really big in Hollywood right now and it making hand over fist. Where is the outrage to find the identity of this person? People seem to be happy to be blindly supporting whoever it was.

Did his time?  He got off easy.  If he hadn't been rich and in Hollywood he wouldn't be able to get a job anymore.  Just because people in Hollywood are getting away with things now (and shouldn't be) doesn't mean that someone should be let off the hook for doing that.  It's not like it was a one-time thing for him.  They had a ton of evidence.  And if he hadn't been caught and 'did his time', he would probably still be doing it.

  13. WAG has good solid storytelling behind them.  All of their movies have been pretty solid, though the fact that LEGO Batman and Ninjago are both derivative might not have helped them.  They are terrible at marketing though, at least with their animated films.  I think they're too used to a lot of their adult fare (especially stuff like DC or HP) basically being sold to an already established audience.  They still have to try with LEGO since most LEGO fans aren't into LEGO to watch movies... they're in it to build.
