  1. My first impressions so take any complaints with a grain of salt. Dune may be Villeneuve's weakest English-language film. He doesn't get lost in the lore or anything, but everything feels rather sterile and ineffectual. I think the overreliance on score to drive the film was ultimately a crutch. The acting was a mixed bag. Most were fine but considering Chalamet and Ferguson were essentially the leads of the film I'm going to be focusing on them. Chalamet I thought was very good. He's playing a reactive protagonist which is more difficult than it sounds. As for Ferguson, I'm somewhat conflicted. She's rather good in one scene and then in the next she's overacting. And considering how integral her role is in the film it's distracting. She can also appear rather pale and sickly at times. That said, I'm still eager to watch it again.
  2. Linda Hamilton "Would Be Quite Happy to Never Return" to 'Terminator' Perhaps the death knell for the franchise...
  3. Scorsese's theme park comments really did a number on them--more than anyone would've ever imagined... I kid. These creative differences may have come before this whole dispute. But seriously... I think those filmmakers who respect Scorsese (i.e. everyone) took his words to heart.
  4. From what I've read Paramount allows quite a bit of freedom for filmmakers to pursue their artistic visions, and so I presume that's how Ang Lee was given the choice to explore HFR once again with a budget of this magnitude despite the utter failure of Billy Lynn.
  5. A genuinely impressive featurette. I appreciate the focus on the technical rather than the nauseous overpraising of a lead actor.
  6. Chaos Walking is a disaster. http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2019/09/not-on-he-radar/ My interest in this is akin to watching a car burning on the side of the road.
  7. https://twitter.com/chrismcquarrie/status/1070781137495056384 Confirmation from McQuarrie that Paramount will not be campaigning Fallout for any awards this season (though from what I understand they've still sent out screeners to the voting body).
  8. I have some trepidation as to whether Fukunaga's been allowed enough time to prep for such a large undertaking. Lea Seydoux's return is a step in the right direction, especially considering the current climate. Not to mention she's a fantastic actress.
  9. McQuarrie describes his role as a compass/security blanket. He's more or less offering his perspective and experience to the production. https://twitter.com/chrismcquarrie/status/1070722412554072064 This tweet suggests he's "largely finished" with his work on TG2 so don't expect much if any of his fingerprints to be on the finished product. I've listened to all three commentaries on the Fallout BD and I'll post some thoughts on the respective thread soon.
  10. That line was in fact an improvisation by Cruise himself. Its intention is less concerned with provoking a laugh-out-loud response and more about introducing some levity to the scene. The humor in MI6 is considerably reduced compared to the previous installments. Marvel movies in particular incorporate much more humor. I believe you simply don't enjoy McQ's writing. I couldn't care less about it, but TG2 will be fine. Kosinski is more experienced than Kurtzman and the production hasn't shot themselves in the foot by attempting to start a cinematic universe. I'm still flabbergasted by the fact that Cruise even signed off on the very idea. He must greatly admire the MCU or something.
  11. I'm fairly certain that new project he was alluding to was TG2. McQ has stated they've collaborated on 9 films together. It's safe to assume he's contributing to TG2 in some capacity. In a recent interview with Collider, McQ is attempting to green-light a remake of a film that would star Rebecca Ferguson but the studio isn't calling him back because it isn't "a slam dunk". And FWIW the studio in question is Fox, i.e., they're currently undergoing a merger with Disney so that complicates matters even further. And MI7 hasn't been announced yet because Cruise and Paramount have asked McQ to return but he's taking a breather and has told them he'll think about it. Personally, I don't think he's returning for MI7. They should hire a new director to begin prep as Cruise isn't getting any younger. As for whether Cruise and McQ should take a break: I agree. I'd rather McQ work on something other than an action film. Cruise's choices of late have been very safe. Or he may have realized audiences are more receptive to his presence when he's acting in films with a heightened reality. American Made seemed to have come and gone without much notice. But that said, their partnership has literally revived their respective careers in large part due to the success of EoT. Cruise's, let's say idiosyncrasies, are tolerated by the GA now and McQ is out of director's jail. It's a win-win for the both of them, and so if they continue working together, they have my blessing.
