    When people said in some other thread, never seen a record breaker reception being so negative, I thought for a second, wait what record are we talking about, so made up record like best OW for a Hollywood SH movie or something.

    No we are talking about the biggest openning ever in China and it was true that reading the thread one would have not known that was the case.

    $200m is a totally made up irrelevant number (specially when you consider that it is volatile to the exchange rate and other factor), biggest openning ever is the big bar. Would not surprise me if the movie fall like a rock after that, having people going right away so much in that market and for that type of movie effect combined, but still..... 196 vs 206 vs 210m OW are like 5% difference.

    I think much of the reaction comes from the fact that presales seemed to indicate a OW in China over the Dom OW, at least to the most knowledgeable users in this subforum. I for one thoughh the floor was 230M, based on POTUS pojections so, since I thought 200M was already in the bag, it doesn't look too great for me, even though objectively it is a great number.

    Also, I'm not blaming the users who made the projections at all, I'm thankful to them for trying to predict as well as they could. I reckon this movie behaved very differently than what's normal in relation to presales, so not their fault.

    Didn't notice anyone commenting on this, this list, is the highest grossing movies worldwide without 2018 movies, is it going to count?

    @Critically Acclaimed Panda

  3. Here it goes. Nothing too offesive, I guess, except having 4 MCU movies on the top 10 (That is, before 2018). I have many more movies from the 10's than other lists, and way less from the eighties. I guess that's because I just started getting into movie on the 10s, most of the old good movies I have watched are here because of the effort I made a couple of years ago to watch all movies on the top 250 of IMDb. I also really love westerns, many of my 10/10 (which go down to number 42 on this list) are westerns in one way or another (No Country for Old Men is not considered a western on Letterboxd, but I consider it to be so.) including my favorite non-MCU movie of all time, Unforgiven.

  4. I feel like some people put excessive emphasis on multiplier. Many people would consider Infinity War to be more of a success if it hit 650 off of a 220 OW than 700 with 258 OW, and that makes no sense. Multipliers are only good as a measure of audience reception, (good multipliers are also generally more fun to track, since everyday there is an impressive number) but if a movie has a huge opening because of a very high demand, it won't reach too high a multiplier, even if it's very well received, except for very rare cases. So if Marvel has 4 movies on the top 25, even if their multiplier is a piece of shit, that doesn't mean anything other than they are an incredibly successful studio and franchise. IW multiplier is good for what it is, reception is very good as anyone can attest, and it's total numbers are just great, the international numbers even greater.

    Edit: Also, they actually have 6, and the other 2 just have good multipliers, so it's even better.

    We have enough lists for it to be fair, I’d just like as many as we can get.  There is a danger of the number of lists submitted being smaller than last years though unless I get over 15 today and tomorrow.

    You'll have mine by tomorrow.

    Man this is a horrible way to watch movies.  Not everything demands logic.  Just enjoy the film instead of overanalyzing every shot.

    I don't think I over analyze, I usually try to give the movie the benefit of the doubt, like "maybe there is a reason for the characters to do this, that I just don't know". But when it is so clear and important for a scene, it takes me out of it.

  8. I'm watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on Netflix right now, and so far very little in the film made sense at all. The whole bar shootout scene felt completely forced, at every point Indy was way overwhelmed, they could have just killed any time. Also, why did the girl travel with him? She just followed him into the plane. Also, of the plane guys wanted to kill him, why not shoot him while he slept, instead of giving up a whole plane just to kill a guy.

    I would imagine they have no official idea and are just taking those service words for it, they could even be the one writing them at this point with the distributor finding the wording and example that make it look the most positives they possibly can.

    It is a pure publicity that the trade accept to publish because they gave them some little hint and they like the traffics, imo of course, but there is not journalistic anything involved in those (or even work done).

    Speaking of that, I find it hilarious how some of this articles include "already breaking records" for records that are based on a defined period of time. Of course the record for sales on the first 24h is going to be beaten in the first 24h!
