Scott Mendelson is out of his mind if he thinks Avatar 2 is going anywhere near that December 17th release date.
Avatar may be an international smash hit, but it was a novelty in the United States. It made an insane amount of money, but that was based off the new introduction of 3D into cinemas, and since then 3D has gone down in popularity in the United States.
It will not have a repeat of the success it enjoyed in 2009, not even close in the domestic market.
No, Avatar made as much money as it did because it was a damn good movie. If 3D was the reason, why didn't other 3d films make as much money?

Nah it is pretty shitty. With a really bad villain. I am an evil general "ahhhhh" Plus it has the whole white savior thing for it.
2.7 Billion says otherwise, something TFA will never reach. Lol, doubt you should bring up bad villains being a fan of TFA. Napoleon Dynamite, I mean Kylo Ren was awful. Anyway, to get back on track to the weekend numbers glad this movie is finally slowing down. Looks like 900m will be out of reach.

The real battle will be Titanic's WW, team Jack and Rose will reign supreme. Also I'm calling out every sws fan on here who pretended world wide doesn't matter in advance for when TFA approaches Titanic's WW. If you go see TFA to try and push it over the 2.18B mark you're a hypocrite. You're also a hypocrite if you post on here celebrating if it passes Titanic.
Oh so true. You know they're gonna get all hyped if it comes close or eclipses Titanic, yet they'll downplay it not beating Avatar. Fanboys I tell ya lol.

Jurassic World is in the top 3 of 2015.
Sick of the hate on Jurassic World, I enjoyed it much more than TFA.

So today is going to be not only the first sub-$20m day but also the first sub-$10m day? Seems very possible we may have to wait until Wednesday for Avatar to fall.
Wait for Avatar to fall? Don't get the anticipation for something that was pretty much written to happen like a week ago. Thankfully worldwide, Avatar will still be king. I doubt the movie will make lower than 10m today.

Soaring to massive $740.3M after today,
#StarWarsTheForceAwakens smashed $700M in record 16.5 days. Avatar needed 72 days!hihi, Gitesh still adds the 0.5 day.........
the fun think about $88m is.... it missed a milestone.... as usual
JANUARY American Sniper $89,269,066 Well yeah, Avatar was a completeley new IP. Star Wars is the most monetized franchise in US history. Not surprising.

HAHAHA James Cameron, a guy, a director, is bigger than Star Wars. Yeah ok buddy. I see why people here call you a troll. That's not even based on any relevant facts. The Star Wars franchise will be around long after Cameron is dead, because it's bigger than any one man. As it just proved.
And Avatar held #1 for 8 years? Aren't you an Avatar fanboy? It's 2016. It took the crown in 2010. That's 6 years dude. Not 8.
If you think Avatar 2 even has a snowball's chance in hell of passing TFA, you're seriously delusional, but it makes for good entertainment.
No, YOU'RE the one that's delusional. I think if this run has taught us anything, it's don't get comfortable with your movie being top dog. Records are made to be broken. There's already a movie that surpassed TFA, it's called Avatar. 2.8 billion worldwide is something TFA will not see. You don't know how successful Avatar 2 will be. Not everyone was jaded against it like you.

Geez, man, get over yourself.
And really, separate your feelings about the movie (and any inherent quality) from the box-office. There are plenty of movies I think are awful that make a ton of money. And the same goes for anyone - except what we think is "Awful", "OK", "good", and "awesome" isn't the same either.
No reason to take that part so seriously, just joking. Yeah I know what you're saying but this movie isn't plenty of other movies. It's the all time top domestic movie. All the #1 movies did something fresh or groundbreaking to get its spot. Don't see what this did besides slap the Star Wars name on a good movie. I know I won't change your mind so we'll just agree to disagree.

Aren't you tired hating on 1 movie yet?
You can search "every popular movie name + sucks" on Youtube, no movie is without flaw (sin).
SpoilerTrue, but most of those flaws are not the main villain being made into a joke.

Any takers on what this makes on Monday?

sage you don't have to do this to yourself. I didn't like the movie but I'm not gonna pretend that everyone else deep down hates it too.
I'll be the martyr, I can take it
Yeah but I guess I just can't see how people can overlook such huge issues. Maybe I'm overestimating people. As much as I crap on the movie here, I genuinely thought it was a good movie. Being far from great imo, I'm not understanding the box office run. Congrats to the movie for its accomplishments, but I feel brand power and die hard fandom put it where it is.

My man, you haven't picked it apart with a fine-tooth comb. You've posted "the villain was weak he shouldn't have taken his mask off i couldn't take him srsly" about 100 times
Lol I wasn't referring only to myself. Look up "The Force Awakens sucks" on YouTube. You'll see all the problems I don't post. I don't post all the problems myself because of spoilers. Kylo Ren and Overpowered Rey are 2 of my biggest gripes though.

I never would have known your opinion had you not posted just now.
And also, it's pretty hubristic to assume that everyone will automatically gravitate toward your opinion.
I've gotten a lot of flack for the opinion on these boards too lol. I wouldn't say hubristic, lots of people share my thoughts on the flaws. When movies make this much money, I guess it's to be expected for people to pick it apart with a fine tooth comb.

I thought about this earlier today after looking at ANH's adjusted numbers and tried doing the math in my head.
TFA is still mighty impressive when adjusting for population.
Alot of those first run dollars, I believe, are through 1977 but also 1978 and 1979. Also you didn't have blu-ray and pirating which eats away at boxoffice receipts.
It's a testament to the staying power of the SW brand.
Boxoffice $ is just a portion of the money that's being made off of TFA. Can you imagine the leverage KK has with tv/streaming services not to mention merchandise??
That's the biggest thing selling this movie , brand and franchise power. Not the movie itself. The movie is good, not great. Rose tinted glasses blind people to the big time flaws of this film. I'd say when it's all said and done, this will be the most hated Star Wars movie outside of TPM.

The reasons for all your issues have been hashed and rehashed over and over in this thread.
If you haven't read/understood them then you will not
Whether they were explained or not, the way it was presented felt rushed to me.

Death Star 3.0 is definately the most obvious weapon for people who are in the "TFA is just a rehash of ANH" camp. But this isn't the only problem these people have with the movie. I don't think it will be a dealbreaker to anyone else who liked the movie even if they didn't need to see another Death Star.
I also didn't like it, I would prefer to be anything else but a death star, but in the Starkiller base part of the movie we have 3 of the best/most memorable scenes that completely overshadow the "Ugghh, another Death Star, how original" sentiment.
-Kylo Ren interrogating Rey
-Han's Death
-Lightsaber duel
These are my 3 favorite scenes from the entire movie and all of them happened in the last act.
My big problem with the movie is how Rey defeated Ren with no training whatsoever. Hard to care about Rey training with Luke Skywalker when she beat the main villain already. Kylo Ren looked terrible, reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite under there. I also hated how he casually unmasked, not once, but multiple times. It's like what's the point of the mask to begin with.

Umm, no! Avatar will still be far above it worldwide. That's all that matters. Good thing too, TFA is overrated.

Hopefully Reigns gets booed out of the building. Seems WWE will never give up on his push though. Hopefully Wyatt gets the title, but I know it's not gonna happen.
