“Warner Brothers retained distribution rights to its Legendary franchises, both Dune and Godzilla/Monsterverse.”

this is factually wrong, Dune and Monster-Verse are not WB franchises, they are 100% Legendary’s property. However, WB has a word to say about the movies they had already financed. As you well mentioned, WB co-finances around 20-25% and as such they get the same share from net box office. So in 2022 when they signed with Sony they couldn’t have split Dune 2 and current GxK from WB because WB had already financed their production.

Of course we are not 100% sure who will release the next sequels that aren’t in production yet. However, why Sony would accept to make a deal with Legendary that wouldn’t include the only two major Legendary franchises? Legendary left WB because they never accepted the straight to streaming releases of Dune 1 and 2021 GxK. Why would they let WB carry on distributing those franchise since both are the two main reasons that made them leave WB? By the way, the monster-verse series are already being produced outside WB, by Netflix and Apple TV+ since 2022.

I would probably argue that Dune AND Godzilla are IP's that likely have contractual ties with WB, but I'm not sure if that's even a proper argument to be made.

All I know is that when Legendary's deal with Warner Bros. ended after Godzilla's release in 2014, it still had ties to the studio even with Kong: Skull Island. Legendary had a deal with Universal during that period despite that and it ended in 2019. If Legendary decides to finance another Godzilla/Kong feature, one should reasonably expect it to be distributed by Warner Bros. and not Sony.

That being said, this conversation is probably better off in the Godzilla x Kong thread and not here.

  2. Venom and its sequel were fun and guilty pleasures for me. Tom Hardy plays a really fun Eddie Brock and Venom.

I'm absolutely seeing this one, but I'm perplexed by Sony's decision to move it from its November spot. I don't know if Joker will have the same appeal as it did the first time, but Venom's previous release date felt safer.

Ummmm...  @misterpepp is as close to official as we can get and I for one massively appreciate them letting us know current plans.

Yes, until the PR blast actually goes out, current plans can change.  But, guess what?  Ticket sales rollouts can change even after a PR blast, if rare.

    ...

Just about as rare as pepp being wrong about a planned ticket drop.

    ETA:::

In fact, as I scan their posts, I don't see a mention of GxK's ticket drop date from them.  So why did we think it was today then, anyway?

Cryptic’s date is correct, looks like the 13th.

As Porthos mentioned, I never posted a date for GxK until now (Not that I’m devaluing the contributions of others to this thread). I’m pretty sure the ticketing dates posted here, both by myself and others, have been right way more than they’ve been wrong.

I think there's been a misunderstanding. I wasn't accusing anybody in this thread of having incorrect information, however in circles outside of BOT, it was believed that tickets went on sale today. I was mostly chiding myself. Apologies for any confusion, as my comment was directed at nobody in particular....here, on these boards.

In the future, I will be more mindful of what I say and with more context, as I did not mean to cause a tizzy. It was meant as a passing remark and nothing accusatory.

  4. Wanted to hold off until I heard more, but I still see that Garfield still sounds like Chris Pratt and not the lax cat I'm familiar with.

Even without Lorenzo Music, Bill Murray and Frank Welker were able to capture that tone perfectly. All I'm hearing is Chris Pratt, not Garfield. The plot thread doesn't appear to do anything for me, and the humor doesn't work either.

I'll probably end up passing on this, sadly.

what is you excuse for its 2019 box office????? Monster-verse 2019 movie final run at American box office was 110M.

The question isn't directed at me, but I feel that there are numerous reasons.

    (1) Bad human characters.

    (2) Bad use of human characters.

    (3) Very difficult market that might have been riding the Disney high following Endgame.

    (4) Tried to be "smart" with a metaphor for climate change, but it couldn't be pulled off, because again bad characters.

    (5) The film was plugged full of fan service. It was a film that many fans love, but it didn't cater to the general audience.

I enjoy it, but to many others it probably just looked like any other big budget movie.

  6. I think on the upper spectrum, its potential maxes out at $55 million on opening weekend*. Its legs will obviously be the most important factor.

Some of the predictions I've seen on these boards require massive confidence and brass. I don't see $70-$80 million. If this movie gets close to Kong: Skull Island's OW, it's probably something worth applauding over.

**Added note: Keyword here is potential. I don't think it's actually going to touch that number.

  7. Hung with a friend. Went to see it with her because for some reason she wanted to.

This movie sucks. I didn't think Argylle was good, and I'm sorry for bashing it because it at least looked like it had effort put into it. As bizarre as this sounds, it feels like the people behind THIS didn't even try. I mean, they really, really didn't try. The only other people in there were laughing at moments that I guess should have been taken seriously. In some circles I'm in, people are still dogging on Night Swim. Compared to this movie, Night Swim is almost like gold because it feels like it was a production that was taken seriously.

I'm curious to know what kind of dysfunction occurred during filming and during post, because I can't imagine any of it went smoothly with the product that was put on screen. It's worse than Morbius.

  8. I think it's important to also point out that even some of the "versus" films or films from the Showa series had messages or in some cases, satire. Godzilla vs. Hedorah is one example people like to point to, but there's also King Kong vs. Godzilla. The 1962 film wasn't just a monster romp, though you wouldn't be blamed for writing it off as such if you watched the Universal cut.

The first film in which Godzilla and King Kong ever fought was a satire sparked by the state of Japanese television in the 1960's and how outrageous antics were used by companies to sell their products. Especially in the Showa series, some thought was put into some of the films and their stories; not all of them, but enough to show that these films were able to go beyond "monster vs. monster" bashes when it counted.

Even those that don't follow that trend still don't need to justify their existence. It's all entertainment. There's nothing wrong with that.

It´s so funny when people get mad at this comparing to -1 or Shin

This difference in tone is part of the franchise historically even in Japan, if you dislike just focus on the dramatic movies but keeping using them to say how the adventure movies are trash is so ´´look ma i´m an adult now´´ coded lol

Looks fun to me which is the goal clearly, visually it also looks good tbh with the bright colors and nice texture without really care about boring realism like most movies that is also CGI heavy but desaturated

This is something I continue to see, and I find it tiring. Not every Godzilla film needs to be "certified KINO." Most Godzilla films aren't but still show effort and have entertainment value. The sooner people understand this, the better.

Godzilla Minus One was like a steak dinner with wine. Godzilla x Kong looks to be a Taco Bell meal with a Baja Blast. I think both taste good, but they're very different products. A little bit of this "fast food" has yet to kill me.
