My mind is blown. I saw the Iron Giant, a Ninja Turtles, and Freddy Kruger.

What kind of legs are we expecting now? I figured last weekend it probably would not be able to match Dawn's 2.87 multiplier. But seems it might be even more frontloaded than we were thinking. Sad to watch that play out because Matt Reeves did a great job. The movie deserves a bigger audience.
With the potentially huge drop this weekend, I don't even know if it can reach a 2.5 multi. It's final domestic gross might be around 130-135 million.
I agree. This film should have a bigger audience, but it's the type of film that rarely gets one. Personally I find the "dark and depressing" comments a little over-blown. To me, it wasn't as dark and depressing as Logan. Now I do find War very slow and methodical.

What happened with Planet of the Apes? People really liked the first two and this one is getting the best reviews of the lot and people really liked that too.
Why is it failing like this?
Many reasons. It's dark and depressing. Slow and methodical. Very little action setpieces. Released in between Spidey and Dunkirk. Released in the summer where people want to see fun, light-hearted blockbusters.
This film is centered around the apes while the previous two had a blend of human characters and apes. The humans are marketed as the villains.
The trailers don't sell you on why you should see it. Dawn's selling point was apes riding horses with machine guns and driving tanks. That is pure fun entertainment. War doesn't have that.

Great trailer. I like how they didn't even bother explaining Firth's return.
This feels like such a summer movie, though. Still think it should've moved, but alas.
Since his return was announced, I hoped they would treat it like classic Bond. Where a character is killed off, then returns in the sequel with no explanation.
Or even better, each sequel he returns in some cliched way. A clone, robot, alternate universe, past version, etc.

Quick question. Could one watch the Big Sick by their selves?
Asking for a friend...
Don't judge me.

Gonna need some good walk up attendance. Pre-sales are absolutely abysmal. Was just looking at Arclight Hollywood. Counted less than 20 tickets sold for Valerian's three shows on 7/20. Dunkirk has 10 shows and probably around 1,500 tickets sold (gave up counting).
Are you trying to kill That One Guy? Because that's how you kill That One Guy.

It is fair to say that Valerian won't do well in the US, but just wait for the OS numbers.
We can only hope it does as well as Power Rangers.

I think SMH is missing that visual hook that audiences look for. The most memorable set-piece was lifted straight from Spider-Man 2. The action is so bare bones compared to GV2 colorful, inventive scenes. Or Wonder Woman's inspiring action beats. The action is stripped down from previous entries. That might be a factor in WOM.
On an anecdotal note, my mom won't see it because he's a kid again. The idea of another young inexperienced Spidey has completely turned her off. I can see this affecting older audiences likewise.

Pirates was fine and might stay flat or slightly above the last one. Transformers footage was beyond terrible.
The best thing so far was the footage for Blade Runner 2049, Annihilation and Downsizing.
How'd the Downsizing footage look? Did it focus on the special effects? I really enjoy Payne's movies and I'm interested into his first foray into special effects.

Seems like Logan's legs dont match its reception on the internet.
This is just my anecdotal evidence, but I've seen Logan 3 times in theatres and the audiences weren't happy with how it ended.
There were mumblings of it being too depressing. Others said it was boring. Some people said the ending was bullshit. I overheard these two older guys saying the movie wasn't theater worthy.
It's a fantastic character study that deconstructs the superhero genre, but it's not a crowd pleaser. It might be hurting it's legs.
Again it's anecdotal.

One of the few categories I'm stumped on tbh.
Agreed. I've gone back and forth in this one. I'm in a few prediction contests. Half I've chosen MBtS. Half I've chosen LLA. Its one of the closest categories this year.

Anyone else still surprised Viggo Mortensen is nominated? He didn't seem to have much momentum during awards season since Captain Fantastic was released earlier in the year.

I'm not sure I'll watch this year. They're just so long. But I'm in like 5 Oscar contests this year so maybe I should.
I think Best Leading Actress is the most interesting acting category this year. I can see all nominees winning except for Ruth Negga. Stone is the favorite, but I think this could be the category with the highest chance of an upset.
