So medical school has prevented me from watching a lot of films the last few months but I'm on a break now which is great because I was looking forward to this and was able to watch this last night. I thought Jen was really really good in it which is not a surprise. The movie is kind of slow but if you're into a slow burning type of a film, you'll like this one. I think the problem with the movie at least for me is that they're selling it like a full blown action movie ala Atomic Blonde when it's really not. They should have either incorporated more action into the film OR not marketed it the way they did. I also have some gripes with the script and how Jen's character was treated at times throughout the movie but I don't want to steer the thread into the wrong direction so I'll just leave it at that.
But overall it's a pretty decent movie with great performances so I can't really complain all that much about it
I'd probably give it a B
That's kind of what I'm seeing, B/C, except for people who can't get past the content. I think the Cinemascore will be a C+/B-, a serviceable spy thriller with some violent sexual content. Death Wish might get a better Cinemascore because only people who know what it's about already are going to see it.
They either should've added even more sex and violence and went for broke, or just added some action sequences, not AB level, but just a couple. If this were to somehow get a sequel I would tell them to just go for broke and screw the exploitation police. I'll know better when I see it, but from listening to Francis Lawrence it sounded like he was being very cautious. Part of that was probably because of JLaw, part of it because he was trying to avoid a backlash.
I don't think the marketing was the problem, if you watched it there was very little action in the trailers, the shower scene is the only one I ever saw. I think it was the media with the Black Widow & Atomic Blonde comparisons that made that case. I kept reading she was going to be a badass and all. Not what this movie was supposed to be.

Something odd, I can't rate it. I tried to vote as a want to see last week and it wouldn't let me. Just tried again, just to see if it would let me rate it, and it won't. Is anybody else able to get in to at least attempt to rate it?
Nevermind, it had kicked me out of my account, didn't even notice.

Audience Score at 54%. That seems low, is the movie really slow?

The google score is 82%, so this is definitely another case like The Post and 12 Strong where politics are influencing it.
I think you're right, JLaw is a favorite target of the Trumpers.

It has been strange for this movie, there were a few reviews two weeks ago then nothing until release - almost like a selective embargo.
That might have been the reason for the early embargo lift. It's possible Fox asked a few critics in early, ones they thought would give it favorable reviews, knowing of course they couldn't predict what the reviews would be. It kind of worked for a couple of weeks. Anyway, this dissipated the reviews and watered down the reactions in the headlines.
In other words, they didn't want the headlines this weekend to be about the reviews.
These types of movies are always going to be problematic. Unless they are done by auteurs like Fincher or Aronofsky, this much violence and sexual assault is going to bring a lot of hate. Francis Lawrence is a solid workmanlike director, but he's not in that masterclass and when he takes on complex movies, which he keeps doing, it's never a home run. His crowning jewel was HG CF, and that was already well into pre-production when he took it over.
I think maybe he's just too nice a guy to be a great director, most of them are demanding pricks.

YIKES!
Well it ain't getting a 100% rating on RT it would seem.
also:
I've been tracking these, there are very few reviews like this, in fact most have thought the sex and violence was handled very well, including some female critics.

Yeah, no shit. Smart move by Fox. Apparently this is some deal they have for 6 films, this is the second one, not sure which one was the first. Good movie, cheap tickets make for an effective promotion, and that fills seats.

I'm trying to figure out how he got away with tweeting this, he must've gotten permission from Fox because the embargo doesn't end until Thursday midnight.

It seems they are screening this everywhere on the planet. If it's any good the word will spread quickly.
It also needs good reviews.

The question is, how much does it need to make to deserve a sequel?
We need to know the final budget before we can answer that, but maybe 4x the budget? For a budget of $50M what would be $200M WW.

Any rumored budget number? I suppose something like Gone Girl, $60m.
It’s long and hard R, no way this thing gets to $100m dom.
Fox has been doing the adult hard R for a while now, they know what the risk is and I would suspect they kept the budget as low as possible. I think Deadpool was was $60M. I can't imagine they paid more than that for this one. Let's say $60M, and it could be even a bit lower, if it wasn't starring JLaw it would definitely have been less. I think the movie Blake Lively is making, also a spy movie, has a $50M budget. Atomic Blond was like what? $30M?
They probably want to be able to break even as low as $50M Dom and $100M international. Both of which I feel are safe bets unless it's a complete turd, and that seems unlikely.

I read somewhere that fox has no ads this year at superbowl.
That was either bad information, or Fox hadn't decided whether to go for it yet. The teaser confirms that it's running during the SB.

I think the brown wig and the blonde with the coat outside that some people people think looks Atomic Blondish both look like wigs. The ones that don't to me are the ones she wears when she isn't 'on assignment' (at least the context of when she wears them looks more natural in the trailers). One is the first look you see in the clip below, where she has her finger to her lips and you see it a few other times. I had decided you were subconsciously supposed to be thinking 'disguise' when she was working on a target. The ballerina brunette wig similarly looks natural to me.
Ah, I see what you're saying.

That is the same day that Jen is doing a "Times Talk" for the New York Times in DC, along with Francis Lawrence, and former C.I.A. Chief of Disguise Jonna Hiestand Mendez. Apparently, Mendez worked with the author of the book (and not on Jen's wigs for the picture, unfortunately...)
The brown wig looks pretty good, but the blond one not so much.

maybe that can give some clue:
10 book linked to a tv/movie adaption more popular:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/4497/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_books_1_4_last
There is 19 spy book more popular on amazon right now:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/9536072011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_books_3_5_last
Not sure how it translate in popularity, but it is not Girls on a train/Gone Girl/Life of Pi or anything like that level.
It was not in the top 100 best sellers (Ny times or amazon) any year:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/29970.2013_NY_Times_Best_Sellers_Fiction?page=1
It will play like an original movie I imagine with that level of popularity of the book.
You may be right, but when you look at that first link you have to remember that most of those books are from TV/Movies that have already been released and are hits. Some are Stephen King, some are Harry Potter, those were enormous hits, and have been out many years. One could argue that the fact it's showing up with that elite company is a positive sign.

This just in from AwardsWatch. This would fit with what Francis Lawrence has been saying about the hard R.
QuoteA friend of mine who works at Fox saw this the other night and described it as "one of the most gory, graphic movies I've ever seen." He really liked it, but said it's very intense and the sex scenes go there.
He's not a huge movie guy, actually, so his opinion shouldn't quite be taken as gospel, but I figured it was worth contributing.- 2

Dominika never tried to hide the fact that she's Russian.
Francis Lawrence said he decided to go with a light Russian accent. A good light accent is preferable for clarity. Anyway, if they wanted to make a realistic version then the Russians in the movie, and there are a lot of them, would all be speaking Russian to each other with subtitles.

Avoid the spoilers, it's out in 2 weeks. Everyone who's seen it says you can't half-ass the movie, the visuals for Aronofsky movies are critical. I know some people in certain countries may not get to see it at all, so it may be in certain circumstances the only good option.

Watching people overreact to every rumour regardiing this film justifies this film's existence as much as anything. It is actually fun to watch. Just a theory but is it possible that Jlaw does not care about awards, just doing movies that interest her? She already won a best actress Oscar at 22. Maybe doing an odd or quirky film it what she is interested in. Maybe while everyone else is trying to place her film's in an awards category she does not really care as much.
I get the feeling she gives zero fucks about all of that after 4 nominations and a win. Many actresses go for 30 years before winning an oscar, e.g., Julianne Moore, she did it at 22. She's just doing projects that she finds interesting, and this one sounds really different.

Not a fan of Jlaw's, but goddess Pfeiffer is irressistible to me.
So, nobody really knows what the plot is? I was assuming that Pfeiffer was playing the titular parent...
All we have is bits and pieces. The basic description is a couples tranquil existence is interrupted by uninvited guests. That could be just about anything, but here's what we know:
Bardem and Lawrence are a couple, and it appears Pfeiffer and Harris might be a couple, possibly JLaw's parents, but we really don't know for sure. This is based on some descriptions by someone who shot a scene with them. There's a really bizarre scene that may involve rape, or some sort of violence, involving Bardem and Lawrence. The scene has been described by various extras and others involved in the shoot. There was a shot of bugs on a table at one point, and we know there are some digital effects because Aronofsky was lamenting he has to shoot with digital cameras to accommodate the EFX and didn't like it much.
Beyond that, we've got nothing.

RED SPARROW | 03.02.18 | Fox | Jennifer Lawrence
in Box Office Discussion

She made a comment, I forget where, that they paid her a BUNCH of money. Remember, this was negotiated before Passengers was released, and her quote at that time was $20M. So that might be what you're seeing, a $60M movie, but with JLaw it's $70M.
