  1. Thanks for you wishes @Carlangonz After some holidays, time off and sickness I'm here again¡ Hehehe. Agree with your comments for the second half although as you said is difficult to have a good analysis so much in advance without knowing the exact schedule. As for the results of this year. Admissions and boxoffice has had such incredible increases over the years that it was bound to stop at one point. I don't think other countries (only China perhaps) have had these steady ganings for so many years now and with more than 16.5 Billion Pesos as income and a record for Mexican movies not many people are complaining about these results. We're still on the Top 5 of international markets. I can only hope that despite budgetary constraints we return to make good mexican movies in 2019 (as I said while doing romantic comedies helps mexican producers as we first need to build a strong mexican market) the quality of this year's bunch left so much to be desire and people are starting to get tire of the same stories and actors. What will happen as a whole in 2019? Probably another record. As you have already mentioned we will have an incredible year with so, so many blockbusters awaiting that could definitely get to 17 Billion, specially if the Super-Heroes, Live-Action remakes and Animation titles perform as expected.
  2. First of all: Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you have a great 2019 Second: @Carlangonz Thanks for the Recap of 2018 it was a great analysis. As for the previews for 2019. It will be crowded when we get to the summer. I don't really understand why Disney decided to have the three big Live Action-Remakes released the same year. Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King will, in the end, eat each other up (a little bit, nothing to scream flop of course) but it is a strange release strategy. Glass I'm dying to see it. I really hope it delivers as trailers do make it look as an event movie specially with the psycothic smile of Samuel L. Jackson The Lego Movie will flop hard. I don't know anyone that has liked the first one (I enjoyed it but not to see it twice) so probably 140M or so? (less than The Lego Batman Movie). Shazam¡ looks silly, really, really silly but it could be entertaining, nevertheless I don't think it will have Dr. Strange / Ant-Man levels. I really hope we have a good year in Movies. more horror, more comedy and more Mexican movies...although the recent wave of romantic comedies gets worse by the day and I don't think La Boda de mi Mejor Amigo will turn the tide.
  3. Well I said 450M for Ralph back in October but I really don't think it will get that far, considering the impeding release of The Grinch (with the voice of the best comedian in the world¡) unless it really holds well next week (certainly Instant Family will be some competition) Grindelwald is dying a slow death and will probably be spot on the 285M that I predicted¡ (At last I get one correct¡¡). The movie is really boring and it tries too hard to be connected to Harry Potter so no good WOM at all Bohemian I said 80M so that's was an obvious mistake. Will it get to 400M??? Will it be possible? And now for December, so let’s go and just throw numbers: The Grinch: 320M (this and Ralph will eat each other) Mortal Engines: 45M (who in god’s name put this movie against so many blockbusters??) Aquaman: 370M (looks fun, which gives it an advantage compared to JL) Bumblebee: 200M (boring) Mary Poppins Returns: 215M (not sure a musical animated hybrid will have that much traction) Spider-Man into the Spiderverse: 85M (well…it has Spider-Ham so that’s something) Perfectos Desconocidos: 105M (seen the Spanish one, loved it until the end, hope the Mexican one improves in that regard)
  4. Well. I'm glad I don't do this for a living. 100 Million for Bohemain Rhapsody??? In no way I thought this would gross as much. I like Queen but didn't think the whole country loves them¡ Well... It was a very nice performance and probably have some legs as a lot of people in my theater thought it was a good movie (I really liked it although I feel they went for the easy way). Rami Malek indeed made a fantastic job and will surely take some awards for this (and of course be nominated for an Oscar). The Nutcracker will surely cross 100 Million although there was probably some money left on the table. I've heard some good things about it but couldn't see it over the weekend. Bohemain will probably win this weekend too, especially if it holds well. Or do you see Overlord breaking out? Loca por el Trabajo can be a surprise but I haven't seen that much promotion for this one. First Man and Spider's Web will compete for the adult market so neither will break. I was really looking forward to see First Man until I began reading reviews it just sounds looooong.
  5. Yeah. With that line-up that's going to be crazy. Specially because Mortal Engines, Bumblebee and Aquaman will eat each other. Aquaman does look interesting and will surely be the winner of these three but not sure if it will get to 400 Million total (like WW or JL did). Mortal Engines will die a horrible death with so much competition. Mary Poppins Return will have to take a back seat to the Grinch and Perfectos Desconocidos will probably get to 100M it if is funny. And... Bohemian Rhapsody do you really think this will have such a great opening? More than 50 Million only on opening? That would really be crazy but hey you always know more than I do 😃. Nutcracker will not get to 100Million although I really want to see it.
  6. So here we are again. Halloween did way better than I expected as Mexico has never been very Slashery inclined, terror of course but not pure slashers. So this week The House with a Clock on its Walls that seems like another Goosebumps, will it be good for 25M? I understand the fascination with Coco. I really liked the movie but it has already been on video for several months, even HBO will have it soon so a re-release?? Has it been selling well? I don't think anyone that I know will see it again but I will have to wait and see. What do we have for next month? Bohemian Rhapsody, I'm going with 80M in total Fantastic Beasts: 285M total Ralph: 450M total
  7. Well. After opening with a difference of almost 40 Million A Star is Born was at 170k of supassing Venom yesterday so yeah, I guess Today is the day Mama Monster chomps on the Symbiote Monster (at least on the week over the weekend Venom could improve a little bit but only this weekend)
  8. That really was a very good number for Venom. 189 Million¡ Great. Although everything else basically die this weekend due to the monster that Venom was For this weekend. What do you think about A Star is Born? I don't think it will be a big sucess here but Oscar Buzz can probably lift it a little bit Goosebumps 2 can in the end be the winner with 35-40M probably
  9. Well. It was a good number for Smallfoot. Although my boss's wife and kids went to see it and they didn't exactly like it. It was like... meh. Johnny basically drop from the face of the earth but good milestones for The Nun and Alpha. So... for Venom you're going with 150M+? I haven't heard good things about it and I bought tickets for Imax on Sunday (afternoon) and theather was basically empty so... But you are better than me at this so let's say 130M (just to be safe¡ Hahaha) Do you have the complete boxoffice numbers for this year in Mexico? I only have the ones that are published by Canacine (this is only a hobby) but as they only publish the top 10, I cannot know of all the movies that are outside that range or where do you see the numbers (if they are published at all)?
  10. MT is back again: House with a Clock in its Walls: 15.5% My Hero Academia Two Heroes: 14.5% A Simple Favor: 10.7% The Predator: 6.8% The Nun: 6.5%
  11. Hahaha. I'm terrible at this. The Predator with 60+? I did not see that coming at all. CRA was never a sure bet that's why WB basically dumped it. Storks did 49 Million so Smallfoot let's say 50 Million. As previously mentioned we have a lack of animated movies so this definetely should do some business just to cover the market. Parents are eager for the next "big" animated movie to take the kids to The Nun will get to 400 Million. Alpha has the 100 Million assured and we still have one Mexican movie in the Top 10 So you're going with 150+ for Venom? I think without the connection to the MCU this will suffer a little bit but yes... let's say 130-150 Million.
  12. Thank you @Carlangonz it was a very nice, sad I didn't have more vacation days¡ The Nun will get to 420M but it is really a wasted opportunity there. Yes, la Llorona will be a hit here if it's done well So the Predator at 35M? I have seen a lot of publicity but not hearing so much buzz What do you think about Venom? About 80-90M? I'm not so sure I want to see it. It does not look that bad but...
  13. So how is everyone? I was on vacations last week so couldn't really follow the Box Office. The Nun did amazing in the first weekend but freefall this weekend due to bad word-of-mount (yeah... it's not good). As @Carlangonz said, this will not reach 500 million. I believe even 450M will be hard to get. Other than that Alpha may join the 100M club (slim chance but still) and El Dia de la Union was met with a collective "meh" So, The Predator and Crazy Rich Asians? What do you think? 25M, 15M respectively? I'm dying to see Roma. Not sure when will it be available in Mexico (in a more mainstream way I mean). Do you think this will finally give Mexico the Oscar for Best Foreign Movie?
  14. So here we are the weekend where The Nun will get to 130M at least. Everyone that I know is excited to see this one. Other movies? Alfa should not do that bad with about 20M but I think this is the weekend where El Meg gest chomped to 11M just because The Nun will get all the big screens (including that Rare Imax run) Do you think The Predator has any chance on breaking through on the 21st? I'm really looking forward to see that one as well as Crazy Rich Asians
  15. So... I'm basically terrible at this¡ Alpha in first place?? with 33 Million? Didn't see that coming really. Mexican Movies have had a good run, at least two movies have been in the top ten since the last weekend of July. This week it was the turn of "Ana y Bruno" and "Tiempo Compartido" (although I did see the last one and didn't like it. Found it boring, pretentious and ultimately blah... and going out the theater the man behind me turn to his wife and said: "Well... this was really terrible") Also I saw the trailer for El Dia de la Union (hadn't heard about that movie before seeing it). My question is: Will people rally behind it (as it looks intense and it will most surely be corny) or will it be shunned completly due to the memory of the recent events? whatever the outcome I expect a lot of crying in theaters
  16. I've already purchased my tickets for The Nun in Imax for Friday the 7th (first horror movie I will ever see in Imax, that's strange). I'm thinking at least 130M for opening weekend as we haven't had any good horror movie in a long time and this one has Bichir's Power (hahaha). For this weekend I expect: 1. El Meg (4peating) with anything between 25-28M 2. Mile 22 probably can get to 18M 3. Alpha with something like 14-15M 4. Slenderman with 12M
  17. Well, I put those wrong. Slender 28M, TSWDM 15M (forgot about Teen Titans) and the Meg did 42M (only 39.1% less that's unheard of, although it's a very entertaining movie) The Equalizer and Mamma Mia I almost nailed those. @Carlangonz you're like a prophet¡ Grease shows in the 9th place with 5.75M. That was a very good call. All in all, I think it is still a strong showing for late August. Next week, surely El Meg will 4peat (the first since Black Panther in February)
  18. My thoughts for this weekend: El Meg - 38M (just to say something as I have not make any good prediction with this one) The Spy who Dumped Me - 22M Slenderman: 17M (Just because Mexico LOOOOOVEEEES HORROR) Equilizer 2: More Equal - 15M Mamma Mia 2 - 12M And finally, the bet will have to be paid and the Minion will enjoy his tacos al pastor
  19. I'm not so sure The Nun will open over 40. It will need to basically do the same as The Conjuring and although Valak is a very popular monster I'm not sure she will carry the movie to those levels. 35 Million (as Annabelle did) is a safe bet. I think The Predator does look fine. At least very well done. Nothing more really exciting that month but these two
  20. I'm still baffled about the numbers for The Meg. This should be the surprise of the summer as I don't think anyone believed this would break out as it did at the beginning of the year. Christopher Robin is a very sweet (although somewhat saccarine) movie, getting to 100 Million will be difficult. Can "Ya Veremos" get to 200 Million? It's already out of some theaters so I don't think that will happen. So this Weekend, nothing to see... The Spy Who Dumped Me looks funny but not HAHA funny. Teen Titans I will wait until it's on TV, Slenderman looks generic and The Happytime Murders just looks gross. The summer has indeed ended.
  21. Then... This weekend there is nothing really exciting so basically Tiburoncin should repeat at number one. So: The Meg - 47M Denzel's First Sequel - 32M Cher's Comeback - 25M Annnnddd HT3 will get to 492 Million (just thiiiisss close to the 500 Million Tacos) Summer has ended and we have three weekends with nothing big until The Nun scares the shit out of people with 100M plus
  22. Hehehehe. Sorry for being nosy, what is the bet? That it gets to 500 Million pesos? If that's it, you're ohhh so close but 20 Million pesos more is going to be complicated with kids on schools next week. I hope you get it
  23. Well... I saw the movie on Friday and It is good, of course take into account is a movie about a giant shark eating people, but it is very entertaining and fun. Theater was packed and the local theater had like two or three screens for the movie. I really wasn't expecting this kind of breaktrough. As I said before, I love this kind of movies but not everyone does. I think rating helped a lot. There were kids in my theater and as it wasn't bloody or gory they liked the movie (one was a little bit scared but it was more because of it being dark that because of the shark). What will be the total? 350? 300? 275? As @Carlangonz said, it had an outstanding multiplier over the weekend, could it hold during August? It has only one more week of vacations as kids go back to school next Monday but on the good side, there is nothing big until The Nun on September 7th. In the end I love this kind of surprises at least it makes following the box office fun and somewhat unpredictable
  24. $80M Wow. That would be outstanding for a ridiculous movie like this¡ Although I have talked to a lot of people and most want to see it, that OW would certainly be nice
