  1. The funny thing is, back when everyone was acting like Endgame over Avatar was a lock, I told you guys that it was far from certain. Avatar just made an astonishing amount of money, even if you take inflation out of the equation. And it's almost as if superhero movies don't have the reach that some people think they have.

Anyways, we are not out of the woods yet, but it's looking less and less like Endgame will make it there.

I have no idea what you're responding to.  Evidently you've built up some narrative in your head about what you think I was saying, and are responding to that.

My first statement is both factual and relavent.  The currency exchange rate makes an enormous difference in WW box office numbers.  It was far more favorable for Avatar than it is for Endgame.  If the exchange rates were equal, Endgame would not be struggling to beat Avatar's WW Box Office, it would be cruising past it.  The End.

If somehow you extrapolate from that statement that I believe that Endgame's achievement is bigger than Avatar's, or that adjusting for exchange rate and nothing else is a fair way to compare movies, or whatever other nonsense you imagined I was saying, that's your baggage.  That's on you.  I didn't say that, and I didn't imply that.  I made a factual statement quantifying the impact of the exchange rate on two movies that are being compared to one another all over the place, and that's it.

The second part of my post is a prediction about the future direction of the strength of the dollar, and a prediction that Avatar 2's delay will wind up helping its WW Box Office as a result.  I think this is the potentially interesting part of my post, that I don't see people discussing when they are talking about WW numbers a year or two years or five years out.  It is impossible to know whether my prediction is correct, but I think it's reasonable, and I think it's relavent when you're projecting Avatar 2's Box Office.

First of all, you cant tell me that that a quote like "The exchange rate is the only reason EG isn't crushing Avatar's WW record beyond recognition." isnt an emotionally charged statement, so stop acting like you didnt have an agenda when you posted it. And that you seem to be personally attacking me for replying to a specific part your statement gives me the impression that your post was made in bad faith.

Second of all, I didnt have an agenda with my post. I merely recognized that it is disingenous and pointless (which it is) to bring up exchange rate differences when comparing EG and Avatar without considering other factors aswell.

The exchange rate is the only reason EG isn't crushing Avatar's WW record beyond recognition.  When Avatar made its run, every 10 Euros translated into $14; during EG, every 10 Euros translates into $11.  It's the same story with most major currencies.  Just a monstrously huge impact.

With regards to A2's chances of getting the WW record back, one good thing about A2 being delayed is that it's almost inconceivable given the political situation in the U.S. that the dollar can remain strong for another 2 years.  By the time A2 is released, it is easily conceivable that it will be even more favorable for A2 than it was for A1.  If you told me you came from the future and on the day of A2's relase, $10 Euros translated to $16, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.  I'm not predicting that big of a drop for the dollar, but the situation right now is all sorts of FUBAR, and there are a lot of ways it could play out that would make foreign governments and institiutional investors flee to Euros or the Yuan.  I would bet a kidney the dollar will be significantly weaker two years from now than it is now, I'm just not sure by how much.

If you adjust for inflation, Endgame hasnt even beaten Titanic yet. Your argument is void.

If you want to considere things like exchange rates and inflation, Endgame doesnt stand a chance of even hoping to reach Avatars gross. MUCH more people went to see Avatar than Endgame, even if Endgame could technically make more money in the end.

Of course, that doesnt diminish Endgames achievement (especially if it manages to take the crown from Avatar), but if you want to bring these kinds of analytics into the discussion, theres no doubt that Avatar was and always will be the bigger film. Infact Avatar and Titanic are the only movies of the last >30 years that would land a slot in the top 5 of highest grossing films adjusted for inflation.

"a bunch of big movies coming out"

    where?

There's one big movie. Not a bunch of them. and Pikachu is unlikely to "cut avengers legs off".

by Sunday it was at 2.18 billion and two days later Monday and Tuesday its at 2.28 billion. I think it's time for Jim Gang to accept defeat.

Godzilla. Also, Im not Jim Gang. But celebrating early is never a good idea.

It's going to make at least $200m more domestically, which would leave just 315m internationally, how does it not get that?

As I said, it certainly can happen, but it hasnt happened yet, yet people act like it. Its not a lock and I like to point out that Im going to be one of the people that is going to watch Endgame most likely this WE and will contribute to its sales, btw.

I wouldnt be surprised if it doesnt cross that threshold. And then all the people celebrating early will feel pretty fucking stupid.

That’s why 2nd place now is such a phenomenal achievement! Jim gang needs to celebrate being 2nd!

Why is everyone talking like Endgame has surpassed Avatar WW? It hasnt yet and Im not convinced it will. Theres a bunch of big movies coming out that will cut off Endgames legs and Marvel movies are not known for having great legs in the first place.

It could happen that Endgame surpassed Avatar WW, but its way too early to celebrate.

  6. Without trying to make a box office prediction, I literally cant imagine a single person that qualifies as a movie goer of any kind that would say "You know what movie Im going to skip? Avatar 2."

Like I literally cant see that happening. I think everyone will see this movie, no matter if they liked the original or not. There is also a subgroup of people who regretted that they didnt see the first Avatar in the cinema, which probably is a very large casual audience, that will also definitely go to see this one.

We don't know, these companies have giant design teams, they do work on the designs of their assets but it s the main character so who knows.

Anwyway, crazy something like this could happen in 2019.

Actually, we do know. The process of how designs are created and translated to CGI on big blockbuster movies is well documented. Theres no reason to assume the CGI artists where any more involved in the design of Sonic than they were in any other production. In other words, they werent involved.

    suposedely worked on this crap.

    What went wrong ?

Curious to see who was responsible of Sonic.

This isnt a CGI issue, the design is just terrible. The CGI artists dont create the design most of the time, they get handed the finished design and then they translate it to CGI.

Its the fault of the people that designed Sonic this way (and the ones that approved this), not the CGI artists.

Avatar was the first non "Educational" movie I saw in IMAX, and it was actually the reason the theater near my house installed an IMAX....

I honestly do not think this movie is going to do as well as many have hoped, because i think the appealing aspect of the first Avatar, was that it was shot with IMAX cameras..

Not a single second of the first Avatar movie was shot with IMAX cameras.

Remember reading an interview from marxist Inaritu about the purity of art and how wanting your movie to be as succesful as possible was a horrible idea.

Hope this Rolex ad passed his purity test.

I really wonder sometimes if these people are self-aware or not.

    Probably not.

Except that starring in a Rolex ad has nothing to do with artistic purity, its not affecting his art if he makes money by starring in this ad.

God, I remember when this thread first popped up. Its such an incredibly stupid sentiment and shows how limited reddits (and of large parts of the internet in general) view on culture actually is. Whats so aggravating about reddit to me is that the people there so happily cultivate their incorrect assumptions like its some sort of badge of honor.

  12. Did people seriously expect this movie to be some bombastic action movie finale? Thats not Nights deal at all and not the impression I got from the trailers, either. I havent seen the movie yet, but if thats supposed to be the "bait and switch" people are talking about, then ooooh boy. From the trailers and the movies this is a sequel to, I fully expect this to be a slow, methodic and emotional drama.

Poor Paramount desperate for a new franchise. Star Trek is in shambles and Transformers future is uncertain.

The way Paramount has handled their franchises has been really weird in general. The Transformers franchise could be in a very different position now if they changed their strategy after the completion of the first trilogy. Both with Star Trek and Transformers Paramount has these incredible juggernauts of movie franchises, they just dont seem to plan far ahead enough and dont know what do to with them after the first couple of movies.

Or you can say its impressive that people still think it was real people in blue makeup.

I shit you not, the third (or was it fourth?) time I saw Avatar in the cinema, there was a guy bragging in the front seats saying he could see that the dragon-creatures in the movie where just bats in a costume. Come on people, how disconnected can you be from media.

    No, not in the least.

You want your movie to be seen by as much people as possible.

As a filmmaker myself, this is not true. Having a large audience is a great feeling, but whats more important is that your movie is watched by the right audience, because only they will be able to properly appreciate it.

If you make a movie purely to generate money your statement might hold true (and even then its debatable), but artists hold other things in higher regard. Though money is great to have, too.

I wasn't excited for this movie even though I love Glass and Unbreakable and I like Shyamalan, but now that critics hate it and the word divisive has been thrown out, I can't wait to see it. Those types of movies are usually the best. And are also the most influential ones because filmmakers who take risks may not always please the crowds and the simple minded critics, but are the ones who make a difference and are the most imitated, even though they usually don't get credit for it.

    This is spot on.

Anyhow, Im not sure when I will actually get around to seeing this movie. Unbreakable is a great movie, but I havent seen Split yet.
