Bond matinees at the theater I track in Salt Lake looking strong. Evening also looking brisk with the four showings between 6:00 and 9:00 all guaranteed to be sellouts (the 7:00 PM in the largest auditorium is already completely sold) and the later ones likely to come close to that. For comparison's sake, here's what it looks like vs Venom 2nd Friday as of 11:30 A.M.
Bond tix sold
matinees 215
evening 302
Total 517
Venom tix sold
matinees 15
evening 37
Total 52

I know James Bond is probably the oldest blockbuster franchise but what was the first?
I said in an earlier post that I thought the Charlie Chan series of whodunits was the earliest franchise but I was clearly on drugs. The earliest recurring IP belonged to The King, Charlie Chaplin, who played The Little Tramp from 1915 to 1936. I can remember my grandfather talking about the line being around the block every time a new one opened, and how The Tramp was like a member of everyone's extended family.

Maybe the thin man? Idk
Thin Man or Charlie Chan. I actually think Chan came first. Warner Oland starred in at least a dozen of those in the 30's and 40's.

I totally respect the opinions in this thread, by the way. I just think people, maybe because Venom, are fundamentally expecting too much for a non-Skyfall James Bond movie. I said last month "Logan numbers with a smaller opening and better legs, so mid 70s/230." Now I'm more mid 60s and 215, but that's barely a standard deviation away.
I honestly think 65/215 would be a FANTASTIC result in this market. Case counts and hospitalizations have fallen quite a bit from their peak, but they're still pretty damn high and that and all the talk about waning immunity are going to have an outsized effect on a demo like Bond's. l also think there's a case to be made that once you stop doing something that was once a habit... like moviegoing... it doesn't just reflexively snap back. It takes time and a conscious intention. My first trip back to a theater was for In the Heights in June, and the minute I walked into the lobby and smelled the buttered popcorn, it was almost like Kenneth Branagh's wistful "Home!" in Dunkirk, but not everyone is like that.

Bond doing great in Salt Lake at the Sugarhouse Cinemark I follow. 10 showtimes, 44.3% sold.
4:00 PM: 39/106
5:15: 27/62
6:30: 37/46
7:00: 27/48
7:40: 79/106
8:00: 0/46
8:55: 32/62
9:25: 9/48
10:10: 17/46
10:45: 7/48
Total 274/618 as of 1:40 PM I expect those evening shows to fill up and put this over 400 by the time all is said and done. The only comp I have for the pandemic era is TSS which finished somewhere around 250, IIRC.
Friday shows are solid, if not spectacular.

At the theater I frequent I can usually swoop in a few minutes after tix go on sale for the opening night of a blockbuster and have my pick of seats. Not this morning. A full 15-20% of the seats had already been sold for the 7:00 PM show.

It should do much better than BR2049 in China. The cast is very attractive for local hollywood targeted audience. Even if it come later than HBO Max debut, I think it still would top 2049.
Is it still waiting approval from the government?

Hbo max has killed literally every movie at the box office but Dune and Matrix can be exceptions and still approaching 70-80M the first e 150 the second one.
If dune makes at least 200 overseas (It's doing better than Bd 2049 e definitely the word of mouth will be better so it can do it. Bd 2049 made 170M) I think this movie will not make less than 300M.
If it gets that, along with good audience WOM to go with the glowing reviews (seems like that's already happening) and assuming Max comes through with say, 4M+ households or better, I think a sequel is locked. This won't just be a financial decision for Legendary and Warner... it's about prestige and finishing the job they started. If they DON'T go with Part 2, then next year's acceptance speeches at the Oscars may be a lot more entertaining than usual.

I would pretty much agree with what @Lucas wrote. Dune just oozes quality, it's a mood piece on a grand scale with a thick atmosphere, it is not afraid of giving scenes room to breathe and the actors are on top of their game. My man Villeneuve is not interested in silly popcorn cinema, which i appreciate but i dunno how the serious tone and slower pacing will go down with mainstream audiences. And yeah, the ending is rather low-key. I wish, they had shot Part 1 and 2 back to back.
Already got tickets for my 2nd viewing, this time in IMAX. Looking forward to that.
Glad you enjoyed it! How crowded was your cinema?

Hope WoM is good! Trailers look awesome
4.4 out of 5.00 audience score so far on the Allocine web site which is insane. Critic's rating is 4.0 out of 5.0 which is also really strong. Great start.

78% with 65 reviews.
Verified audience score up to 51%.
As much as I enjoyed this movie, I am absolutely gobsmacked that it is 78% with critics. I would have guessed 40's-low 50's tops. In fact, I would have assumed the numbers were reversed: 51% critics, 78% audience.

That's what Hollywood gets for trying to make THIS happen before Spring Awakening, Fun Home and Hadestown.
I'm not familiar with Hadestown, but I'd love to see those first two get their proper due.

Lord Jesus, that was NUTS. Entertaining as hell though. I love how Wan just goes for it. Topo the Octopus playing the drums in Aquaman, the unrelenting absurdity of Malignant... the guy doesn't give a fuck about being 'grounded,' all he wants to do is put on a magic show for the audience and he does so with such style and craft that you can't help but be caught up in the demented whimsy of it all.
I loved it.
(I just wish I had seen it in a theater. This one definitely needs to be shared.)

I don't know much about SJ2, but I doubt people will be satisfied with 35m opening or 100m total even during pandemic era. This is supposed to be a new franchise for 2020s. Oct 22 could save Dune from excessive competition but its biggest competition is actually HBO max now.
Its biggest competition is going to be the Delta variant. Hopefully it will have abated by the time October rolls around.

The Cinemark Theater that I track in Salt Lake City has a virtually sold-out prime evening slot for In the Heights opening day, but 1/4 of those seats were gobbled up by the theater's mandate for 'safe seating.' Curious to see if they will open them back up for sale. They did away with the mask mandate late last week for folks who are fully vaccinated.

NBA player tested positive for the virus;NBA has suspended the season.
The panic factor just went up quite a bit.
This will have ripple effects through the entertainment business..including the movies.
And Tom Hanks announced he and his wife have tested positive for the virus.
They suspended the season?! Holy shit, I hadn't heard that.
And oh man, Tom Hanks. That really sucks. He's a part of every movie-lover's extended family.
Fuck this year.

Apropos of nothing, but can I just give a shout out to whoever does the captions for these topic headings? They are consistently amusing, and even more welcome in these days of dreary box office and real world headlines.
Well done, good sir or madam! 👏

More like a non-event.
I wonder if the rally attendees would want to check out the movie (if they are not sheep).
I'd actually love it if it led to a re-release of Sunset Boulevard, which I've only seen on the small screen. More Billy Wilder is always a good thing!

current events?
Trump, at a rally in Colorado last night, expressed outrage that a movie from S. Korea, who we're, quote, "already having enough problems with," won Best Picture, and then added, "Can we get Gone With the Wind back, please? Or Sunset Boulevard?" to much cheering from the crowd.

These are some pretty fantastic #s all around. I'm behind in my movie-watching (I unfortunately missed Doctor Sleep altogether). Which should I prioritize; Neighborhood? Knives out? or Frozen?
Can't speak for Knives and Frozen... yet... but Neighborhood is really special. Weird (the storytelling is much more unconventional than the trailer suggests), brave, and very moving. It will absolutely find a place in my top 10 for the year.

Just did a quick check for Saturday for Frozen 2 at one theater and holy moly. Every regular showing is at least 95% full until 7:45PM which tapers down to 70% full.
Talk about a perfect example of how a family movie plays out.
Not quite that level in Salt Lake City, but pretty similar. Thursday night is really solid, Friday day is weak until late afternoon when it ramps up again, and Saturday is an absolute sea of red.

If they'd even just tweaked their pitch to say 'Watch it Opening Weekend!'... say, 8:00 PM Sunday... instead of making it available the very second it hit theatrical, they could have made so much more money. The hardcore fans wouldn't have been able to wait so OWs would have been stronger, and the pirates would have been held at bay for an additional 72 hours helping intl. Meanwhile, casual viewers who wanted to watch at home would still feel like they were getting a great deal. It just wasn't thought out very well at all.
