Don’t want to do a fan war thing here, just a quick thought since I popped in and saw some discussion related to this.

Iron Man was a top 50 WW movie, just missed top 40 iirc (in today’s terms this is like 950M-1B)

Detective Pikachu is unlikely to break the top 200.

Can a universe be created with this as its start, yes. Is it remotely comparable to IM1’s excellent performance, no. 585M in 2008 is so far removed from 585M now that it’s not even funny.

I think Detective Pikachu's performance will be enough to justify the sequel in development, but not a whole cinematic universe.

Pokemon is bigger than life. It's a whole different ecosystems with animals that have special powers that often battle each other.

But Pikachu wasn't really about Pokemon battles. It did have a few visual spectacle scenes, though. (The sequel should probably cut back on those spectacle scenes to save money)

I didn't like Pokémon much but damn,  the inability of Hollywood to create new viable IPs outside of superhero movies is starting to be very concerning ...

Nothing kinda new seems to grab the attention of the masses anymore.

Yeah, I'm getting a bit worried that Disney tentpoles (MCU, Star Wars, live-action remakes) are the only big-budget blockbusters that succeed these days.

Surprised to see these Endgame drops given the CS/RT ratings. I'm also reading a lot of anecdotal "IW was better" posts all over the web, as people digest the movie and start asking questions about the plot (similar to another franchise movie which shall not be named).

I do wonder if Endgame was largely considered better than IW that instead of heavy drops we'd be talking about the first $3B WW movie and $1B domestic. Hard to say. Like most people, I'm chalking this up to "uncharted territory" as the opening couple weeks may have satiated virtually all of the demand. The runtime may also be a factor, especially as Endgame does drag in parts (being a finale) whereas Infinity War felt like a nonstop theme park ride.

Endgame and TLJ are not similar situations. TLJ's honeymoon period wasn't even a week long. People are still very positive about Endgame.

I cant sometimes with some of the arguments here.

Endgame has a great chance to pass Avatar worldwide.

    Read that again. Please.

No one would have thought that that was possible before it released. Over IW and TFA? Sure. Over Titanic? Possible, but difficult. Over Avatar? Nope, too far away. And now here we are.

I personally think anyone wo uses words like "disappointing", "bad" or "poor" in the context of describing the absolutely insane and historic run Endgame is having, needs ... god, i cant put this all too nicely.

Those people should just think about what they're saying.

Being a tad disappointed with Endgame's legs (with such a big opening, we shouldn't have expected great legs anyway) != being disappointed with Endgame's overall run. That opening was insane, and even having a decent shot beating Avatar already is an impressive accomplishment.

Just for the information of those interested in the #1 worldwide spot you should know Endgame will have to put a serious gap between itself and Avatar if it wishes to keep it's place above Avatar.

When Titanic hits theaters again in December, will you go see it?

Yeah, I want to see it in its entirety. I want to bring family and friends to see it in HDR. . . . Seeing a film that everybody knows, but seeing it in HDR in 3-D with proper light levels on a Dolby Vision laser projector—it’s really a glimpse of the future. . . . We had the whole film remastered in HDR, and it’s stunning. It’s beyond 70 millimeter, it’s beyond any format that you’ve seen before. What we’re trying to do is get Paramount and Fox to support the rollout of the Dolby Vision cinema project. It occurred to me, hey, we’ve got a movie that’s an evergreen that people love, why don’t we slam it into theaters and let people see it, not in a way it should be seen, but a way far beyond what any movie looks like right now, other than some new films are being authored in HDR? Obviously the [new] Avatar films will be [in Dolby Vision] as well, and in fact, we’re also going to do a conversion of Avatar to HDR. We’ll re-release that at some point down the line; I want to try to help this rollout of the Dolby cinemas, because I think it’s fantastic what they’re doing.

Ofc Cameron was planning to do an Avatar re-release, but I'm not sure if Disney would still let him release it
