  1. As a parent, while both films will benefit from bored families, they feel like they're pulling from different groups. IF is grabbing families where the parents want to see a movie and can convince their kids to watch this. But the primary draw is something the parents think they'll fundamentally enjoy. Garfield is parents looking to entertain their kids. The parents are probably fairly neutral on it. Being Garfield which they're familiar with makes it a safe bet. It'll skew to younger families. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but at least in our household, it's almost two different conversations around the film. But I feel confident that the Garfield market is bigger.
  2. Looking at Fall Guy EA walk ups and they're looking pretty good. Started the day at 65, currently at 113, 74% increase. That's with a half hour before showtime. I wouldn't be surprised if that lifts and gets to a full doubling. It's usually hard for me to measure walk ups as data disappears once shows are 15 minutes in, but this feels like a positive sign. It's also a gorgeous day, probably the first great patio day of the season. Edit: Missed a screening. It's actually 135 in sales. So it did double in walk ups today.

While we won't know for a while if those EA shows will help spread word of mouth on this, it feels like it's only served to split the preview audiences between Wednesday and Thursday, and as a result, there won't be as many packed houses for this.
  5. I think the whole second half of the year looks substantially stronger. Much of the first half of the year feels like studios dressing up films as tentpoles that there hasn't been a lot of demand for and hoping for the best. The second half (starting in July) offers a lot more properties that are generating actual buzz. And it's not like they're all guaranteed hits. But there's a lot of movies where there's at least a core fan base that's really excited for it. Deadpool, Moana, Joker, Wicked all fall into that camp. Gladiator, Sonic and Beetlejuice into a second tier. There's also similar generic hits littered throughout, where the draw is that it's just a blockbuster film. But, having some true fan interest properties is needed to keep people engaged.
  6. I might next report back on the weekend unless I start seeing some movement. There doesn't appear to be much up front interest here. Edit: I went back and tried to pull from a wider area. For a 100 km radius (which captures the whole broader region, probably about an 8M population base), it's sold 11 tickets. I do have data that I pulled from the first few days of The Haunted Mansion, which sold 7 tickets in that radius. That would technically give this a comp of $4.9M, but I'd take that with a grain of salt. Haunted Mansion did ramp up near the end, but I'm pretty sure it underindexed here overall. Plus, it went on sale earlier. I'm using T-26 data versus T-17 for IF. I also would expect that a Ryan Reynolds movie plays a little stronger up here. He leans in hard in his Canadian identity,

While that number might end up being closer to what the final preview number is, I don't think it's giving an accurate picture. This film is performing bad, and this market seems worse than others. With how bad POTA has been and Garfield, there just seems to be extremely little interest in movie going right now around here. I'd maybe look to see if the sports calendar is the culprit, but the Blue Jays are playing bad, Raptors aren't in the playoffs and the Leafs are now on the brink of elimination. There's nothing else going on. People just aren't interested in what's in the market right now.

  19. What's our latest expectation for IF tickets going on sale. That's a film that even if it does well, should have little up front demand. If it comes out of the gate with anything of substance, that's probably going to signal that it has some juice. Given how Garfield has fallen flat and Fall Guy having been on sale for 6 weeks already, I hope at minimum it makes studios reconsider these long sales windows. I don't think it changes too much in the end, but in a world of short attention spans, maybe don't try and sell a movie over a month out.
  20. Challengers, western GTA (southern Ontaro), T-1, MTC4 Challengers for my area has 11 showtimes for tonight and has sold 138 tickets. This is slightly ahead of Civil Wars 133 tickets (which I pulled later in the morning). It's below the 192 sales of Mean Girls. 0.718x Mean Girls for $2.3M 0.964x Civil War for $2.8M

  22. I think it's too reductive to say that a poor trailer is leading to poor sales. We have very little to evaluate the effectiveness of a trailer other than pointing to impact on sales or subjective assessments. But sales are driven by a lot of factors. Personally, I think the trailer is fine. But it's not an all timer or anything. I don't think you can say the trailer specifically is what's killing this without other evidence. I think we need to look at whether this type of film just has some audience limitations. I know that Bullet Train is the benchmark that's getting used frequently, but, The Lost City strikes me as a good comparison. If the goal is a good date night film, then this feels like its got a lot of overlap. It had marquee stars and was targeting the female demo, but could barely muster above $100M. The story isn't written on this yet, but I do find it extremely disappointing so far. I still had hope it would break out more even a week ago. But doing daily updates where it's just not selling many tickets is pointing to that trend continuing.

  25. Full showtimes are up for the Thursday previews for Fall Guy, and across my five screen sample, it only added two showings. Theyre really maintaining a light touch on this one. It's not like there's a lot in theatres right now that warrants holding onto screens either.
