Oh, just stop this shit. It's nothing to do with quality, but brand and licensed/existing product.

The only studio that has something on par where their quality has, indeed, impacted gross, is WB with their DC movies. But even then, Shazam was excellent but got swallowed up by CM and EG, so quality is definitely not the factor you keep banging on about.

Shazam is a kid's movie. How much do you expect it to gross? Plus it didn't click anywhere globally. China really hates it.

disappointing number for China - The Lion King.  54/118?  I was expecting 125/350.  Japan could still make it to 200 with a 20x OW multiplier.  1B + America should have happened, hopefully Avatar gets scary and emotional with animals too

Have you seen musicals' BO in China?

How many franchises tend to make a billion dollars into their ninth film? All good things must come to an end. I'm sure Universal has made plenty of money off this series. I'm sure they'll be fine no matter what this one ends up making it.

How many franchises have a 200m budget for their ninth film?

I think Hobbs & Shaw's underperforming because we all expected it to act like a F&F film.  Only issue?  Movie's been promoted like a Rock Movie.  And if you look at his last five OWs in the past two years:

    24.9M Skyscraper

    35.7M Rampage

    36.1M Jumanji

    18.5M Baywatch

    35.5M Central Intelligence

    Average: 30.14M

Take out the BW Outlier: 33.05M

    Thursday Night Previews:

    2.40M Rampage

    1.95M Skyscraper

(Which is as low as it's comping out to currently at Lincoln Square)

So if we take the F&F out of the expectations, I guess the movie's performing as expected?

(And, I will be the first to admit, I totally jumped on the F&F bandwagon.  My Summer Game will SUUUFFFER because of it.)

    Are their budget also 200m?

People are aware that "Marvel vs. DC" as a phenomenon was basically entirely made up by people at Marvel & DC as a means to goose their paying marks into buying more copies of both publishers' comics? It's only as bad as it is now because the people in charge of the media reporting on this stuff were children who believed in it fully like it was WWF or WCW... and whose fandom is much more like professional wrestling fandom than anything else...

The studios aren't really competing with each other, and if one of the studios (or publishers) goes down the other will actually be hurt by the lack of competition and contrast. Nobody at either place wants that.... mostly because most people who work at the one place end up working at the other... and some work for both at the same time...

Actually, the pro wrestling thing is a good comparison. Eventually, WWF, who was scared of competition and whose endgame WAS to take out WCW, bought them entirely.... and you know what happened? WWF got crappier. Way crappier. And a lot of talent lost out...

This is not what Marvel Studios or DC Entertainment are doing to each other. They're not really in competition like that. They're both just trying to make money for their investors. They can both win without the other needing to lose.

You are right. Its not even a competition.

The recent Pixar entries are all interesting to examine. They've all done gonzo business. All gotten pretty good to great reviews. And all have basically generated no conversation. Like, "Hey, here's this thing I liked with a sequel. Yep, still good. Peace out." The last one that really got into the cultural conversation was Inside Out. Even Coco, with all the accolades and people loving it got quiet soon after release.

That’s how family movies are, less online discussion. That doesn’t mean people have lower interest than other genres.
