The late 70s/early 80s are now far enough in the past that making a project set during that era will naturally be expensive, especially if we're talking any part of the entertainment industry. One day it's going to cost a pretty penny to recreate the 2010s.
But also as @Cmasterclay pointed out, the sets also mean recreating concerts where you'll have to pay and costume hundreds (thousands?) of extras unless you go the Bohemian Rhapsody route and create a mostly CGI audience. That's naturally going to balloon the budget a bit.
Iron Claw takes place beginning in the 70s with an actual A-list actor and features crowd scenes yet cost under 20million
Elvis reportedly cost 85m with Tom Hanks and during the pandemic

Recreating an entire era from decades ago doesn't exactly come cheap either.
It takes place in the late 70s, early 80s and costs more than actual period films

i know this is tracking thread and i hate when people on twitter who have like 12 dollars in their bank account and will spend at least 8 of it on a starbucks drink discuss movie economics..... but.. 70 million for Bob Marley seems crazy
And even if it overperforms tracking which seems likely for the initial opening, at least... that budget is tough to recover
-
i like the first 2, especially the 2nd one. Both are juvenile, yeah, but they're rooted in a genuine sincerity that is usually lacking from this type of movie. The 2nd one is really sweet and surprisingly emotional. Ryan truly cares which cannot be said 98% of the rest of his filmography
but i felt nothing from the trailer

omg if I turn on Twitter ad revenue can I say "Current data shows DUNE 2 opening lower than THE MARVELS"? My engagement will be through the roof and I can move to a tropical island.

2025 looks massively stacked in comparison to 2024. This is a year where the strikes and post pandemic delays are apparent
Dune is the only confident nominee yet I don't see it winning with all this talk of an additional third film. I don't think an inconclusive sequel is going to win--needed to be its definitive Return of the King moment
PICTURE:
Blitz (APPLE)
Dune 2 (WB)
A Real Pain (SEARCHLIGHT)
Sing Sing (A24)
MAYBE:
The Actor (NEON)
Bird (A24)
Conclave (FOCUS)
The Nickel Boys (AMAZON MGM)
The Piano Lesson (NETFLIX)

I mean... Steve McQueen? Bong Joon-Ho? Yorgos Lanthimos? Richard Linklater? Francis Ford Coppola? There are plenty of auteur projects coming out this year. Frankly I'd rather PTA and Tarantino not be drawing attention from them. They're kinda boring at this point.
what's boring about PTA (probably the greatest living american filmmaker next to Scorsese) making a 100m movie with Leo or QT's final film

I know Holdovers is a favourite to win best screenplay but that would give Alexandar Payne his third screenplay win. Does he really deserve his third one for Holdovers? So far I think Anatomy of Fall has the best script due to its plot nature.
he isnt credited so no it wouldnt

The Holdovers is almost definitely winning Original Screenplay. Even if it doesnt, I'd still put Past Lives and May December over Barbie. The other 3 don't matter for Best Picture since they're below the line. Look at how many films have won with just a Best Supporting Actor win from above the line categories.
CODA is the only film to win the Screenplay Oscar without noms from both Globes and AACTA. It's also not winning the BAFTA. Yet you think it's the favorite to win the Oscar?
-
11 hours ago, lorddemaxus said:
Well, the movie has no momentum right now. It's performance with critics so far hasn't been any better than Gerwig's last two films (both of which also ended up failing to win the Screenplay and Supporting noms on top of not winning Picture). Maybe the guilds will change things but right now nothing I just don't see how it's becoming more and more probable until then. I also don't trust WB's ability to campaign lol (their last BP win was Argo and that was a much weaker year than this)
The fact that it's like 6th overall on critics top 10 lists is pretty incredible when it's already going to be more dominant with guilds than Lady Bird and Little Women
-
19 hours ago, lorddemaxus said:
Barbie is not winning lol. Pretty much the only above the line its likely to win is supporting actor (and even then, against really strong competition). Pretty unlikely to get a BP win with just that. Would probably put in the top 5 though
It can easily win Screenplay?

If it was released in 2011, it would have grossed like 60-70million. Now it'll be lucky to finish half lol
