Can you imagine, if it was something bad.......... the movie is already borderline with what is the thing everyone remember from it.
It's weird because I enjoyed Black Widow. It wasn't a masterpiece or anything but I enjoyed it just fine as standard Marvel fare. It helped that I really liked the new characters. They needed fresh, meaningful elements to make the film itself meaningful. For instance, without a character like Yelena Belova, who we know will play a part in the MCU going forward, you end up thinking "What did I just watch and why?".
I see your point too. If that scene is the highlight for many then that says a lot about the reception if a scene like that didn't "save it".

Safe? Definitely not. The presales aren't that far behind BW, and it should have better late bumps since the characters aren't well known. I would be quite surprised if it didn't open higher than BW.
Also with the BW comparison, remember BW had an awful Sat. Eternals is opening during the school year and is theatrical exclusive, will have a much better weekend trend.
Thank you for this! As I told Ronin, clearly I was getting the wrong impression.

I am not sure about that. Its sales I believe are in front of SC and Venom at the same stage. What the movie does in the last week leading in is what will count. Thats where Venom and SC picked up and Bond died. Ticket prices are higher now. The market is also more crowded so that might mute pre sales early on when people are more concerned with getting tickets for Dune/HK/Bond etc and will be waiting for closer to OW before they purchase. Before it was 1 big movie and then a month wait for the next 1. Now its a different environment and that might be reflective of a different pattern for presales.
That's encouraging! Thank you. I guess I was reading into people's comments wrong. I was getting kind of a "lukewarm" vibe.
But last week before release is what counts. Got it! Thanks again, Ronin. You've been helpful on multiple occasions since I signed up here.

My calculation, following the current box office patterns, lead it to 75% second weekend drop, to 12.3 million $. Overall, it should give the film total of 70.45 million $ for 10 days.
Then there is the third weekend mystery. We are all expecting a smaller drop, since it's an actual Halloween weekend. But how much smaller? I'm thinking of 40-45%.
75%?? That would be wild. That would be the kind of drop I'd expect if its 2nd weekend was Eternals OW.

I like that we're starting to get a steady flow of trailers for next year's films. Seems like it was taking a bit to get there, though the industry as a whole has slowed things down as we come out of Covid times.

That seem unfair without knowing what it looked like in the script-storyboard at the time, it is easy to say in hindsight of what the work put on it since, the long reharsal process of the cast that transformed it and so on (and obviously looking at it on the screen).
And everyone like the scene, but many review will say that the pace of the movie stopped at that point. And obviously without knowning what would have replaced it.
True, we don't know what would have been there instead of that scene. I suppose I'm just happy that we did indeed get what we got.

"too political" in translation means "political allegory/part wasn't handled well". OT Star Wars is political but nobody complains because it works well. It's anti-monarchy, pro-republic, pro-democracy, anti-fascism/autocracy, etc. It's well incorporated into the universe. It's when politics feel out of place because they don't fit in the universe/aren't organic with the universe that people notice and get hung up on it.
Long story short, people are not against politics in fiction, they are against bad politics in fiction, just like they are against bad comedy, bad romance, etc but not against romance, comedy, etc itself.
Well put. Thank you my friend. I understand the sarcastic replies to my post because I didn't word it very well. I'm also quite exhausted with real world issues and just want to escape so maybe the politics that were always there just stand out more.

Bi men dating women or vice versa does not magically make them not bi.
Why is their sexuality even important? This is a comic book property. I couldn't care any less about that stuff when I'm watching movies and shows about superheroes. That's just my take. It's just a distraction. It's a not so subtle wink to the political discussion and identity politics going on in the real world (which I know is not new to films or other entertainment).
Anyway, good takes from everyone about the writing and stuff. Like everything else, it's very subjective.

Why on earth would you want to cut the dinner scene????
Right?? Kevin Feige showing why he HAS to be so hands on, especially with lesser talent involved in making some of these films.

As much as i love Dune, FOTR it is not. That's not a knock on Dune, FOTR is just so amazing. The whole trilogy actually, even though i have a couple issues with ROTK but the highlights, oh the highlights...
Those movies are the gold standard. Nothing comes close. At all. Some of the greatest films ever made. Fellowship was just so magical to experience for the first time. All three were.

Oh right! I forgot about this! I've been looking forward to it since the extras on the blu-ray are, predictably, lame.
I miss the days of Lord of the Rings extended editions.

I think at this point it's pretty safe to say Eternals is NOT opening over $100M. Presales aren't bad but they don't seem to be indicating anything over the biggest opening weekends we've already seen (Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Black Widow).

Halloween Kills through day 10:
Wednesday: $2.0M
Thursday: roughly flat ($2M give or take several thousand)
Weekend
Friday: $4.6M
Saturday: $6.7M
Sunday: $4M
Total: $15.3M (-69.1%)

If HK behaves like Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011 Wednesday will drop around 25% from Tuesday. I'm predicting just a bit over 2 million.

I'm curious what type of sequel she would do it.
I mean, everyone including who dislike it put emphasis in how this movie is different and almost completely isolanted from MCU. With a sequel i don't think it's possible to keep this new approach.
Given how one of the critiques of Eternals is that it packs a lot of story and exposition, I actually think sequels - if they happen - could be much better (I say "better" loosely because I still have no idea how good or not good this films is) with all the character work and world building over with.
Feige wanted the Eternals in the MCU, and the characters and world of the Eternals didn't have the benefit of being slowly introduced within other Marvel properties, so this film just needed to happen. The rough spade work has been done, so to speak. Perhaps it gets a lot easier, and better, from here.

12 episodes, huh? I think the Marvel shows could benefit from longer runs as well.
They may be shorter in length though, which would be even more annoying than less episodes which are longer. Though I could be wrong and it could be 12 episodes, each with a good length. We'll see.
Any guesses as to when this drops on Disney+? I'm thinking March, with Obi-Wan dropping in May.

I for one LOVE Rogue One. Adore it. It seems to be very divisive but it's my favourite Disney Star Wars movie. Needless to say I also love the Cassian Andor character and glad that Lucasfilm is deciding to play a little more in the sandbox with him and his world. Looking forward to it!

I know I'm beating a dead horse here but it's a travesty that a film like this is going to be available right away on streaming. Imagine saying to yourself "Nah, Imma stay on my couch and watch Dune for the first time at home". If this even comes close to being the next Lord of the Rings it needed to be seen exclusively in theatres.

Yeah I agree with this. I think Marvel Studios is spreading itself too thin with the amount of content they are putting out.
With so many creatives, you’re going to get more varying results. It seems they tried to do something different with Eternals but it doesn’t seem to have worked as well as they thought.I think they've done splendid with their casting choices and directors. Unfortunately bad writing can bring everything down and that's where their hires haven't been inspired. At all.
Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame worked because of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The Russos get a lot of credit, as they should, but it feels like hardly anyone talks about the backbone: the writers. Without people who can write films well, you have nothing.

Yep, Google News is what got me. I was irritated. That has never happened.

The market has done the talking as far as Gibson's movie career's concerned. I'm actually surprised anyone still has enough faith in him to carry a presumably still quite expensive TV show. Maybe they got him cheap.
I love him. He's a rare breed nowadays and for that I love him all the more. Bear in mind I'm also a 50 year old woman. That, and I avoid Hollywood like the plague outside of their productions, if that makes sense. I will watch movies and TV shows (as long as they don't lecture me) but I actually don't care for the whole institution off stage. I watch their productions for my own entertainment and when I shut the TV off I'm shutting them all out of my life. It's all quite fake and poisonous.

I like the guy as an actor/director quite a bit but he's a pretty well documented shithead for the bad stuff he's done/said in the past. I'm generally a separate the art from the artist kinda guy but I do understand that some people can't, and that's totally fine.
Also cancelling isn't even really a thing, we DO let the market do the talking, Hollywood above all only cares about money. If cancelling was legit then Mark Whalberg (who actually committed hate crimes) wouldn't still be a big star, Gibson wouldn't be getting this show, etc.
Fair enough. You're right. I just think someone like Mel Gibson isn't the only one guilty of shit (pardon my language). It's all about what gets found out and reported, and what doesn't. Hardly giving Mel a pass, mind you. I'll have to read further into this stuff you guys are talking about.
