  1. July 1-4: "Call Of Duty" Invades Box Office Call Of Duty, based on the megahit video game series of the same name, stormed the box office beaches this weekend to the tune of $120 million over four days, capturing the all time Independence Day weekend record. Its $26 million Fourth of July take is another record for the day, as Americans flooded theaters to catch the military-themed film on a big patriotic day, many of them snubbing real fireworks for those on the big screen. Fairylight and The Dark Victorian had great holds, while fellow video game adaptation Paperboy got some bad news with a wimpy $8 million opening. Call Of Duty: 94,026,467 Fairylight: 28,782,500 The Dark Victorian: 22,185,324 Sitting Ducks: 12,741,220 Paperboy: 8,023,567 Apocalypse: 7,152,334 Day Of The Destructor: 5,684,400 Nation: 4,921,560 Alien-Nation: 3,732,146 Pizza Man: 2,900,784 Call Of Duty: 120,285,435 Fairylight: 35,112,236 The Dark Victorian: 27,128,367 Sitting Ducks: 15,884,325 Paperboy: 9,455,326 Apocalypse: 8,754,765 Day Of The Destructor: 6,743,217 Nation: 5,886,500 Alien-Nation: 4,574,338 Pizza Man: 3,657,431 July 8-10: "Call Of Duty" Continues To Occupy Top Spot Call Of Duty"fell 60% in its second frame but still easily took the top spot for the second straight weekend, beating out Nightmare Chronicles and Cries In The Night. Fairylight stayed in the top three with nearly $20 million in its third frame, showing impressive legs, while The Dark Victorian rounds out the top five. Call Of Duty: 37,605,318 Nightmare Chronicles: 22,118,674 Fairylight: 19,179,602 Cries In The Night: 15,214,398 The Dark Victorian: 14,875,472 Sitting Ducks: 7,768,599 Apocalypse: 4,539,217 Nation: 3,306,547 Paperboy: 3,017,531 Alien-Nation: 2,911,570 July 15-17: "Vesta" Leads Off With Stratospheric Opening Vesta is the latest in a string of sci-fi hits this year, capturing first with a staggering $82 million opening and easily booting Call of Duty from the top. Call Of Duty had to settle for second, dropping to $17 million, while My Side of The Mountain, despite good reviews, had a rather soft opening at $12 million, slightly underperforming initial estimates. Vesta: 82,456,880 Call Of Duty: 17,609,314 Fairylight: 12,758,432 My Side Of The Mountain: 12,330,567 Nightmare Chronicles: 10,428,335 The Dark Victorian: 8,687,534 Cries In The Night: 6,946,427 Sitting Ducks: 4,421,110 Apocalypse: 3,149,580 Nation: 2,675,437 July 22-24: "City Of Bones" Deserted, Vesta #1 Again Vesta topped the charts for another week as City of Bones proved to be a box-office disappointment despite opening in a huge 4,100+ theaters. Its meager $7,000 PTA left it with $29 million and just outside of first place, which went to Vesta. Call Of Duty rounds out the top three with $10 million, while Fairylight and My Side Of The Mountain stayed in the top five with good holds. Vesta: 37,459,016 City Of Bones: 28,957,658 Call Of Duty: 10,557,684 Fairylight: 8,705,634 My Side Of The Mountain: 8,554,336 Nightmare Chronicles: 6,070,483 The Dark Victorian: 5,869,422 Cries In The Night: 3,765,423 Sitting Ducks: 3,112,337 Apocalypse: 2,214,316 July 29-31: "Chrysalids" and "Beer Buddies" Party At The Top One of the year's best reviewed films thus far, The Chrysalids didn't go gangbusters at the box office this weekend, but its $43 million doubled up the comedy film Beer Buddies and easily toppled Vesta, which fell to third behind the two openers. City Of Bones eroded, bleeding 55% and falling to fourth. The Chrysalids: 43,816,754 Beer Buddies: 21,267,543 Vesta: 20,226,845 City Of Bones: 12,457,315 Call Of Duty: 6,570,328 Fairylight: 5,732,119 My Side Of The Mountain: 5,352,118 The Dark Victorian: 3,654,372 Nightmare Chronicles: 3,121,456 Cries In The Night: 2,153,578
  2. Well, right now it's the film to beat.
  3. A DARK comedy, but still came off as a comedy to me.
  4. Nation's got pretty good legs and could get to $100 million. As for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I thought that while it was definitely good, I'm not sure it could really find its audience in theaters. It'll be a huge DVD hit though.
  5. June 3-5: Apocalypse Shuts Down Openers As expected, Apocalypse continued its reign at the top, grabbing nearly $50 million en route to its second straight #1 finish. The Ultimate Race spun out but still managed to take $30 million, while Nation was also a bit of a disappointment with $23 million. Alien-Nation had another strong hold, staying above $20 million and easily capturing fourth. Apocalypse: 49,669,548 The Ultimate Race: 30,706,883 Nation: 23,869,584 Alien-Nation: 21,643,847 Birds Of A Feather: 16,056,324 The Penny Jar: 8,845,435 Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 6,548,323 Interconnected: 5,051,227 Trails Of Tears: 1,906,578 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 1,647,214 June 10-12: "Ducks" Stands Tall Sitting Ducks was no slouch, scoring a quacktacular $52 million and kicking Apocalypse out of the top spot. Apocalypse had to settle for second, scoring $25 million and racing past $250 million domestic. Pride And Prejudice and Zombies was a bit of a flameout, similarly to Snakes on a Plane, though $17 million is still nothing to scoff at. The two "Nations" both held well and round out the top five. Sitting Ducks: 52,271,600 Apocalypse: 25,448,679 Pride And Prejudice And Zombies: 17,846,518 Nation: 15,538,271 Alien-Nation: 13,865,933 The Ultimate Race: 11,432,189 Birds Of A Feather: 9,121,387 The Penny Jar: 5,062,224 Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 3,532,117 Interconnected: 2,970,537 June 17-19: Not Such A Big Day For "Destructor" Day Of The Destructor, a sci-fi/disaster film that was tracking at $50 million plus headed into this weekend, scored a mere $36 million. That was still good for first over the holdover Sitting Ducks, but audiences weren't exactly thrilled with the special-effects laden film. The weekend's other two openers were equally modest, Pizza Man and Jane Loves Karen finished with pedestrian totals, with Jane Loves Karen smoozing up to seventh place. Day Of The Destructor: 36,574,860 Sitting Ducks: 29,861,238 Apocalypse: 15,771,895 Pizza Man: 10,214,385 Nation: 10,143,218 Alien-Nation: 9,543,117 Pride And Prejudice And Zombies: 8,283,459 Jane Loves Karen: 8,261,475 The Ultimate Race: 5,128,346 Birds Of A Feather: 4,995,630 June 24-26: "Light" And "Dark" In a battle of fairy fantasy and Tim Burton irreverence, Fairylight came out on top, though it was The Dark Victorian that may end up the real winner, grabbing a $40 million opening frame. Sitting Ducks fluttered gracefully into third as Day of the Destructor fell apart, collapsing out of the top three. Fairylight: 46,447,090 The Dark Victorian: 41,563,187 Sitting Ducks: 18,578,427 Day Of The Destructor: 12,385,690 Apocalypse: 11,432,555 Nation: 6,743,218 Pizza Man: 5,967,538 Alien-Nation: 5,831,240 Pride And Prejudice And Zombies: 4,763,109 Birds Of A Feather: 2,933,475
  6. May 6-8: Summer Begins With A Bang Interconnected, the heavily hyped sci-fi summer opener, had a raucous $71 million opening, beating studio and critical projections and helping start off summer with some big numbers. Meanwhile, Con Air 2 collapsed as expected, plummeting out of the sky and down to earth and out of the top three, beaten out even by the film it nearly doubled last week, Tarsem Singh's Cinderella. Interconnected: 71,684,036 Fab 5: 20,684,337 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 15,647,208 Con Air 2: Terror In The Sky: 14,028,556 Trails Of Tears: 9,685,443 Elantris: 3,682,115 Paranoia: 2,843,117 Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues: 2,453,219 Spring Awakening: 2,218,567 The Adventures: 2,190,678 May 13-15: "Secret" To Success Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins easily knocked out both the returning Interconnected and the disaster film opener Northwest Nightmare to take #1 with $44 million. Interconnected had a modest fall, staying above $30 million and in the top two, while Northwest Nightmare had a nightmare of an opening with $23 million. Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 44,461,572 Interconnected: 31,882,299 Northwest Nightmare: 23,271,558 Fab 5: 8,182,296 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 7,782,105 Trails Of Tears: 6,128,332 Con Air 2: Terror In The Sky: 5,263,584 Elantris: 1,965,330 Paranoia: 1,705,638 Spring Awakening: 1,660,438 May 20-22: "Alien" Zaps "Birds" Sci-fi drama Alien-Nation soared over Birds Of A Feather, taking first place with a stupendous $46 million opening. Birds Of A Feather was a bit softer than expectations with $37 million, but the coming Memorial Day weekend should help it to stay aloft in its second frame. Secret Of Mana managed a sub-50% drop, bolstering sequel prospects (its expected excellent overseas performance should seal the deal), while Interconnected stemmed the bleeding and kept $200 million very much in play with a $19 million frame. Alien-Nation: 46,388,928 Birds Of A Feather: 37,672,138 Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 23,905,664 Interconnected: 19,225,638 Northwest Nightmare: 7,065,325 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 4,322,115 Trails Of Tears: 3,896,706 Fab 5: 3,542,111 Con Air 2: Terror In The Sky: 2,405,484 The Adventures: 1,228,653 May 27-30: "Apocalypse" Now Apocalypse came out big over Memorial Day weekend, grabbing $138.8 million over the 4-day frame. This just narrowly missed beating out the record set by Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, but the performance still beat all expectations and makes Apocalypse the film to beat this year. The weekend was also kind to holdovers Alien-Nation and Birds of a Feather, which saw sub-30% drops and came in second and third. Opener The Penny Jar was a bit softer than expected, posting a respectable $23 million to open its run. Apocalypse: 110,547,382 Alien-Nation: 33,961,724 Birds Of A Feather: 29,692,375 The Penny Jar: 18,253,216 Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 13,005,668 Interconnected: 9,642,105 Northwest Nightmare: 3,361,283 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 2,905,446 Trails Of Tears: 2,793,431 Fab 5: 2,004,338 Apocalypse: 138,846,354 Alien-Nation: 42,056,438 Birds Of A Feather: 36,221,983 The Penny Jar: 22,876,449 Secret Of Mana: The Journey Begins: 16,843,119 Interconnected: 12,103,348 Northwest Nightmare: 4,218,336 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 3,789,543 Trails Of Tears: 3,591,280 Fab 5: 2,599,077
  7. April 1-3: "Adventures" Stops "Machine" It was a bit of a rough weekend for The Machine Stops, which was expected to take #1 this weekend over the returning Adventures. Instead, Adventures goes for its second straight weekend crown, with Machine forced to settle for a close second. Band Of The Decade was not the film of the decade, or even of the weekend, finishing fifth with a paltry $7 million. The End Of The Universe is still chugging along, rounding out third with a respectable $15 million tally. The Adventures: 25,278,061 The Machine Stops: 24,172,560 The End Of The Universe: 15,263,457 Night Of Error: 9,894,677 Barren World: 9,307,547 Band Of The Decade: 7,085,325 Lucky In Love: 6,437,257 Our Friend The Witch: 3,147,647 Siri: 2,709,384 God's Deal: 2,004,567 April 8-10: "Spring" To The Top The seasonally-appropriate musical "Spring Awakening" was #1 at this weekend's box office in a weekend that saw five films grab $10 million. The Adventures failed to score a three-peat, but was second place with $14 million, while The Day I Met Mina put up a respectable $13 million and finished in third. Spring Awakening: 18,776,507 The Adventures: 14,648,267 The Day I Met Mina: 13,069,537 The Machine Stops: 11,326,544 The End Of The Universe: 10,658,320 Night Of Error: 6,154,682 Barren World: 6,002,185 Lucky In Love: 3,295,678 Band Of The Decade: 2,947,571 Trails Of Tears: 2,708,653 April 15-17: "Paranoia", "Paranoia" The teen screamfest Paranoia easily captured first this weekend, grabbing a strong $27 million and easily beating out romantic comedy Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues, which had to settle for second. Spring Awakening saw some of its teen audiences from last week erode, pushing it to third, while Trails of Tears came in fourth despite bowing in only 500 theaters, getting $8 million. Paranoia: 27,485,681 Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues: 14,668,314 Spring Awakening: 9,607,581 Trails Of Tears: 8,037,654 The Adventures: 7,846,731 The End Of The Universe: 6,956,228 The Day I Met Mina: 6,671,223 The Machine Stops: 6,584,360 Barren World: 3,985,476 Night Of Error: 3,662,385 April 22-24: "Elantris"' Blockbuster Hopes End In "Tears" In the year's biggest box office upset, western drama Trails of Tears captured first place, beating out Steven Spielberg's highly-hyped Elantris. The film, pushed heavily in advertising but a flop with critics, bowed to only $21 million this weekend, a bigger disappointment even than 2001's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence. Paranoia collapsed, losing nearly two-thirds of its audience to drop to third, while Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues and Spring Awakening round out the top five. Trails Of Tears: 23,470,269 Elantris: 21,963,214 Paranoia: 9,563,118 Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues: 7,015,639 Spring Awakening: 5,885,327 The Adventures: 5,148,237 The End Of The Universe: 4,621,220 The Machine Stops: 3,821,225 The Day I Met Mina: 3,704,475 Barren World: 2,546,559 April 29-May 1: "Con Air 2" Takes Flight Despite some of the worst reviews of the year, Con Air 2: Terror In The Sky managed to grab a fantastic $51 million, kicking off the summer season early with Nicolas Cage's biggest opening ever. No doubt bolstered by the first film's status as a cable cult classic, Con Air 2 posted the biggest opening weekend of the pre-summer season. Tarsem Singh's Cinderella took advantage of its status as kiddy/female counterprogramming, grabbing nearly $30 million for a strong second-place finish. Con Air 2: Terror In The Sky: 51,251,664 Tarsem Singh's Cinderella: 29,668,432 Trails Of Tears: 14,022,338 Elantris: 7,064,385 Paranoia: 4,921,247 Sarah's Surefire Cure For The Blues: 4,211,222 Spring Awakening: 3,607,549 The Adventures: 3,311,900 The End Of The Universe: 2,935,820 The Day I Met Mina: 2,356,283
  8. Seriously? It must've been a crappy filler or something because I don't remember it XD
  9. Has there been a Magic School Bus film in this game?
  10. Far better word of mouth than any animated sci-fi film ever, what happened that second weekend was people realizing how good a film they were missing out on and deciding to take a chance on it.
  11. March 4-6: "Storms" Conquers "Universe" In a mild box-office upset, the epic action film Land of Storms beat out animated sci-fi The End Of The Universe to take #1 at the weekend box office. End of the Universe was pushed hard and the studio was hoping for a $40 million opening, but the film finished consistent with tracking and animated sci-fi is typically a hard sell. Despite amazing word of mouth and an A+ Cinemascore, the film failed to take #1. End of the Universe' performance recalls memories of The Iron Giant, a film considered to be one of the greatest animated films of all time, but which foundered at the box office. Land Of Storms: 32,776,750 The End Of The Universe: 28,336,785 Siri: 21,614,896 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 9,554,117 Corporate Secrets: 8,394,815 The King's Speech: 6,230,227 Beast Of Bray Road: 5,863,211 Just For Cash: 4,714,684 Disco Dan: 3,976,004 Ghost Story: 3,216,578 March 11-13: "Universe" Ascendant: Despite two widely-anticipated films opening this weekend, the story of the weekend and of the year so far is of the incredible resurrection of The End Of The Universe. Even portended by the film's first-weekend dailies ($8.1 million Friday, 11.5 million Saturday, 8.8 million Sunday) and the very strong weekday holds, no one could have anticipated that the film would both gain significantly over its first weekend total and win the weekend. Its $34 million second weekend tally puts it ahead of Barren World and the disappointing God's Deal, which fell to Earth with a very mortal $25 million. The End Of The Universe: 34,463,745 Barren World: 32,668,400 God's Deal: 25,263,313 Siri: 13,274,826 Land Of Storms: 11,137,587 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 5,794,217 Corporate Secrets: 5,056,366 The King's Speech: 3,573,112 Beast Of Bray Road: 3,475,223 Just For Cash: 3,190,480 March 18-20: "Universe" Goes On The End Of The Universe continued its reign at the top, posting a modest sub-25% drop and landing at $27.2 million, beating out the opener Night of Error, which scored $22.6 million over the three day after a decent $32 million 5-day opening. "Barren World" also dropped modestly due to great reviews and word of mouth, while "God's Deal" continues its disappointing run, falling to fifth. The End Of The Universe: 27,184,993 Night Of Error: 22,625,314/32,764,214 Barren World: 19,716,312 Our Friend The Witch: 12,883,167 God's Deal: 8,863,570 Siri: 8,125,327 Land Of Storms: 5,017,668 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 4,246,758 Corporate Secrets: 3,558,795 Beast Of Bray Road: 3,016,426 March 25-27: "Adventurers" A Hit There's another animated hit out there as The Adventurers beats down The End Of The Universe for the year's biggest opening to date. Opening in more than 3,700 theaters, the film got mixed reviews from critics but audiences gave the film an A- on Cinemascore, with families especially loving it. The film's big opening barely dented The End Of The Universe, knocking it back to #2 with another small drop. Lucky In Love was a close third, besting Night Of Error and Barren World. The Adventures: 47,065,333 The End Of The Universe: 21,375,404 Lucky In Love: 14,584,502 Night Of Error: 13,886,753 Barren World: 13,415,618 Our Friend The Witch: 5,754,315 Siri: 4,076,332 God's Deal: 3,816,485 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 2,885,421 Land Of Storms: 2,624,673
  12. I don't think it's a problem, by the way. Liz Gillies would probably be the frontrunner even in a crowded field.
  13. I just hope Tangled gets to $200 million, I put a LOT of time into it...
  14. February 4-6: "Seduction" Drowns "Everglades" The thriller Seduction posted a surprisingly strong weekend with $20 million, nearly doubling studio expectations. The weekend's other thriller opener, Teratoma, ended up with a terminal case of box-office woes, opening with $6.7 million and missing the top three. Everglades bled 60% in its second frame, falling to a distant second. Seduction: 20,385,664 Everglades: 9,674,215 The King's Speech: 7,712,353 Teratoma: 6,754,211 Illusiono: 6,684,148 Ready, Aim, FIRE!: 4,732,185 True Grit: 4,640,139 You Just Got Beat By A Girl: 3,905,217 The Hills Abduction: 3,553,444 Black Swan: 3,373,851 February 11-13: "Vendetta" Leads Ho-Hum Valentine's Day Three films opening over Valentine's Day weekend was a recipe for competition, but it was Valentine's Day Vendetta winning out as expected with $17 million, running Seduction out of the top spot and kicking it to fourth. Disco Dan couldn't dance up a win but it did finish with a decent $15 million frame, while Ghost Story finishes with a respectable $11.7 million. Valentine's Day Vendetta: 17,261,885 Disco Dan: 14,926,770 Ghost Story: 11,669,735 Seduction: 7,545,116 The King's Speech: 7,230,790 Everglades: 5,356,843 Illusiono: 4,429,806 True Grit: 3,785,344 You Just Got Beat By A Girl: 2,885,326 Teratoma: 2,463,176 February 18-21: "Werewolf" Wins President's Day Showdown A hotly contested four-day weekend saw Stephen King adaptation "Cycle of the Werewolf" rip into first place with an impressive $38 million bow. The victory comes over the weekend's other major release, the crime thriller "Corporate Secrets", which did well for itself, garnering $27 million. The two films easily crushed the competition, led by Disco Dan which grabbed $10 million over the frame, good for third. Cycle Of The Werewolf: 31,568,740 Corporate Secrets: 22,061,524 Disco Dan: 8,745,213 Ghost Story: 7,331,546 The King's Speech: 6,529,530 Valentine's Day Vendetta: 4,658,194 Seduction: 3,654,118 Everglades: 3,594,882 Illusiono: 3,152,188 True Grit: 2,410,521 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 38,554,612 Corporate Secrets: 27,473,166 Disco Dan: 10,538,216 Ghost Story: 8,823,567 The King's Speech: 8,063,897 Valentine's Day Vendetta: 5,374,331 Everglades: 4,328,436 Seduction: 4,245,620 Illusiono: 3,877,325 True Grit:2,885,736 February 25-27: "Siri" Enchants Crowds Animated opener "Siri" was easily the top film of the weekend, posting the year's first $40 million 3-day opening with a strong $40.7 million tally. The first true family film since You Just Got Beat By A Girl, the film played to families starved for something to see, and good reviews helped bring in the crowds. The other wide opener, Just For Cash, played to much more modest crowds, scoring $8.5 million, behind last weekend's holdovers. Siri: 40,768,433 Cycle Of The Werewolf: 16,588,215 Corporate Secrets: 13,996,548 Just For Cash: 8,496,331 The King's Speech: 7,339,759 Disco Dan: 6,554,216 Ghost Story: 4,817,650 Beast Of Bray Road: 2,751,634 Everglades: 2,593,264 Valentine's Day Vendetta: 2,396,778
  15. Beast Of Bray Road failed to crack the top 10 in its limited releases. I don't normally post BO results for very limited films unless they do something amazing (30,000+ PTA)
  16. January 7-9: "True Grit" Captures Lead True Grit claimed the top spot, ending the reign of Little Fockers over a quiet start to 2011, while new nationwide releases Country Strong (expanding from limited release) and The Nine Tailors posted modest results. Overall business was off a precipitous 32 percent from the same weekend last year, when Avatar led. True Grit, The King's Speech, and Black Swan all had outstanding holds, while thriller The Phone Fiend opened at a modest #6, unable to blast its way past Little Fockers to get into the top five. The film continues to do well with audiences and posted a sub-50% drop, excellent for a film of its type. The Hills Abduction did as expected, while You Got Beat By A Girl was a bit of a disappointment, finishing 2-3 million below studio projections. Both openers were good enough to beat out the other holdovers, led by The King's Speech which finished fourth. Critics were mixed about the film but audiences weren't, packing in crowds and helping the film meet studio expectations. Illusiono stayed in the top two, holding off both a big theater bump from The King's Speech and the weekend's other wide opener, Ready, Aim, FIRE! 17. It's time for actuals for Year 1 of CAYOM 2.0! Today will be January-March, tomorrow will be April-June, Wednesday will be July-September and Thursday will be October-December. Actuals are for the most part final. HOWEVER, if you have a major problem and think I really screwed your film, and you can make a good case, I might might MIGHT consider bumping up your film. You've gotta make a really good case though and there has to be some agreement from fellow CAYOMers that I messed up bad. Anyone else can take it up with Aislyn Turner, Secretary of Complaints...
