Dune Part Two actuals (finally reported):

Warner Bros this Morning estimate was 1 million above the actual BO.

    TOTAL actual opening weekend:

    81,505,391

    FRIDAY: 32,211,366

    SATURDAY: 27,718,894

    SUNDAY: 21,575,131

@M37 2.7x seems to be ok because Dune 2 made 27.7 million Saturday against a 10M on Thursday reported by WB.

@charlie Jatinder was right about Dune over performing on Saturday yet the actuals brought up something a bit lower. Dune made 27,718,894 on its first Saturday.

I’m seeing Gitesh and ERC saying the actual was  82,505,391.

At least BOSAS we can argue that it is the dark twist ending that probably left some negative feeling among audience, Wonka is a harmless, holiday-friendly movie which people should have no excuse to "hate" it.

I’m not sure I would call it “hate”, but I think the Cinema Score was likely a result of some not knowing it was a musical, and possibly from those expecting a different take on the character.

For what it’s worth, the RT audience score has risen to 90% now. I personally think it’s a little early to judge what this film’s run is going to look like.

I know everyone is expecting wonka to be WOM sensation and leg out but 87% on RT for a family movie seem weak no?

If that’s only based on those who saw it last night so far, do we think it was really the target audience? My guess was more likely Dahl/Willy Wonka fanatics who maybe didn’t jibe with this musical prequel, but I could be wrong. I’m interested to see what the Cinema Score ends up being.

It’s semiotics. The joke itself is just unfunny, but we all know this is part of a larger push from the culture media to keep creating a myth around this war and what it’s happening.

Audiovisual is historically used to create narratives that justify atrocities, this is part of that, even if it looks just a silly inoffensive joke about “current events”.

Of course i’m not saying everyone have to agreed but that’s my pov.

But back to the movie, i really doubt any of this will either help or hurt it. It’ll be entirely dependent of good reviews and WOM to succeed.

I personally feel confused by the extent of the backlash. Do ANY people disagree that it would be inappropriate to share shitty music by a band spelled H-a-m-a-s? That is the “punchline” of the joke. If you’re offended by the use of that name in any context, I understand. But I just disagree that it was targeting Palestinians or commenting on the genocide. Though as you said, that is just my POV and others can disagree.

Regarding the film, I agree that this likely will not have any impact.

The thing is, the joke wouldn't have been funny even if there was no war, so odd to make it and risk a backlash. I don't know, it wasn't very offensive no, but just unnecessary.

I don’t disagree, but SNL has always referenced current events and done it in way more blatant and offensive ways than this. (And I don’t find much of their comedy funny in general.) I just personally think the backlash has been blown way out of proportion.

A bit disgusted with Timothee tho after his participation in SNL and that cruel sketch about Hamas

I’m curious if people have watched the sketch or only read about it on social media? I honestly think it’s been blown out of promotion, but everyone is free to have their own opinion.

ETA: thought I would just do a quick recap, for those who have not seen it themselves. The Hamas joke is about 15 seconds of a 3.5 min sketch. Timothée’s character doesn’t think he has anything to live for, when 3 guys try to talk him off the ledge of a building. He admits he has a band, but after playing them some of the music, it turns out it’s awful. He requests they help share his stuff and when they ask the name of his band, he says it’s Haymous (like famous), but when he spells it, it’s H-a-m-a-s. The guys say they aren’t going to share music from a band called Hamas. And then the sketch continues. I totally understand if you think it was insensitive to even mention Hamas at all, but I don’t feel that it is pro-either side (I think both sides would be offended to have that name associated with this guys’ shitty music). To me, the joke was more showing this white guys’ ignorance to not realize that the spelling of his band name could he offensive.

That would be "trying to negotiate in the press" worry, yes.  As "negotiating in the press" statements/gripes go, it's more on the whining side than blowing things up side, so is a bit of nuance to be had here.

But, yes, it would be best if those folks in the AMPTP would just shut up right now.  Still, could be worse.  Has been worse.

(Might still be worse, but again probably wise not to overreact to that Deadline piece right now)

Trying to maintain your optimism, but everything with this has felt very “one step forward, two steps back”. 😝 Let’s see how things progress today.

    This is Good, Actually™.

From earlier this year when the WGA talks were in a critical stage:

Seem to be somewhere between Line One and Line Two.  IMO, the less we hear, the better.  I'll make a minor exception for hearing what they're talking about, but that's about it.

Honestly, the less folks try to negotiate through the press, the better at this stage.  Don't even think I want to hear too much shittalking from SAG at this point, as I think they reset/retook control of the narrative more than enough with the AI talk the last couple of days (seriously, what was the AMPTP thinking there?  Talk about shooting themselves in the foot at a critical stage).

So, consider me... cautiously optimistic since there is a distinct lack of running to the press to try to score points right now.

    *knocks on wood*

I actually think you’re right on the money with this. There was this quote in tonight’s THR article:

“SAG-AFTRA declines to comment due to our ongoing negotiations and deep focus on negotiating in good faith to secure a fair deal for SAG-AFTRA members,” said a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson.

  9. Hmmm…in the article from a different trade last night (Deadline), it was indicated that there was still “serious daylight” between the two parties on some things. So I’m not sure what to make of this Variety reporting, unless AI issues were resolved last night and the daylight is referencing the residuals or something else? I want to be hopeful but think we should wait for something directly from SAG-AFTRA.
