Updated weekend estimates from Box Office Report:
Wonka: $6.72M (-20.7%)
Migration: $5.46M (-12.4%)
I think Migration may edge out ABY for 4th place. Very good holds for the family films.
I’m curious why the tone around this film’s performance is so negative on here? Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think $500 million world wide was being predicted for it a few months ago, so anything beyond that is stellar to me. Am I missing something?
I’m not sure I would call it “hate”, but I think the Cinema Score was likely a result of some not knowing it was a musical, and possibly from those expecting a different take on the character.
For what it’s worth, the RT audience score has risen to 90% now. I personally think it’s a little early to judge what this film’s run is going to look like.
If that’s only based on those who saw it last night so far, do we think it was really the target audience? My guess was more likely Dahl/Willy Wonka fanatics who maybe didn’t jibe with this musical prequel, but I could be wrong. I’m interested to see what the Cinema Score ends up being.
