  1. Ghostbusters Frozen Empire got a B+ Cinemascore which is the same Cinemascore Ghostbusters 2016 got.
  2. He was smart to go off and make another film.
  3. I don't blame her for the bad writing of course but I just don't know why they hired that actress for the villain beyond nepotism? She just brought nothing interesting to the role performance wise and doesn't hold your interest on screen. She's just not particularly charismatic or intimidating. It's bizarre casting. Even a badly written role can be elevated with the right actress. I usually don't mind nepotism but I think it wasn't a good idea in this case.
  4. I didn't realize that Jason Reitman jumped ship. Personally I don't see it doing well. The franchise doesn't do well internationally and the this one somehow looks even more nostalgia baity than the previous film and people are getting sick of the nostalgia bait.
  5. I did not like this film. First off I don't blame the creatives involved. I'm sure SJ Clarkson wanted to make a good film but Sony doesn't care about films being good. The Marvels has tons of problems and isn't a good movie but it is light-years better than Madame Web. I don't think it is his fault because awful movie and ADR but because of all of those issues Tahar Rahim gives one of the worst performances that I've ever seen in a big budget film. Just dire. The script is beyond embarrassing and the direction mostly television movie level. Just baffling that Sony released the film in such poor condition.
  6. I saw the film and rated it half a star more than Captain Marvel which I rated 2 and half out of 5 stars. Larson is far less wooden thank goodness but her character is still among the least interesting in the MCU. Ms Marvel, as she was in her show, is great. Larson seems to struggle with this type of film for the most part but Iman Vellani just bursts off the screen and knows exactly how to play to the cameras. Teyonah Parris is fine. The story is immensely stupid and nonsensical and the editing atrocious. I don't mind the musical planet sequence. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad either. I've been dealing with this disappointment since that awful Secret Invasion series but it hit me again how just uncool Nick Fury is now. He's a pathetic clown. They destroyed his character and I don't know why? The chemistry between the leads is fun so that's nice and DeCosta is an interesting director but man I don't like the script to The Marvels. I wouldn't classify it as a bad film but it is an eh film. I see why word of mouth didn't save it. Man James Gunn makes the found family in space thing look easy but it obviously isn't.
  7. I really hate the framing that the Marvel movies are flopping because they didn't make a billion dollars. A billion dollars is not the goal, making a profit is. Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania box office isn't disappointing because it didn't make a billion, it's disappointing because it either only broke even or made very little profit solely because people didn't like it. It opened well. If it were good it was looking at 600-650M. Same for The Marvels, the problem isn't that it didn't make a billion. It was never making a billion even in the best circumstances. The issue is that it didn't hit the bare medium for a sequel to a 1.1 billion dollar film. 700M would have been a good number for the film but that didn't happen for a myriad of reasons. I just hate this Disney must make a billion idea.
  8. Who said yay? Everyone is calling Aquaman 2 a bomb. Releasing a film during the Holidays isn't cheating. Why are Disney fans implying that it is? Were Disney cheating too when they released Star Wars in December?
  9. Aquaman 2 was always going to flop and gross more than The Marvels. The Marvels being apart of the most successful film franchise of all time and grossing less than The Flash, which had The Worst press for a big budget film this year, and Aquaman 2 is a stunning embarrassment for Disney.
  10. I am still convinced that if they had hired a bigger and buzzier star to play the villain in The Marvels instead of Tom Hiddleston's wife that film would have done better. The Marvels, like Aquaman 2, would have always flopped but I think it would have done a little better than it did do with absolutely no star power. And no, I don't consider Brie Larson a star.
  11. I have no interest in Wonka but I am glad it is doing well for the health of the box office, because people had a weird hate boner for the film before it was even released and because The Marvel fans on Twitter have been sobbing about that film rightfully being called a bomb while Wonka was called a hit "despite opening 7 million lower." So 2 out of three reasons are petty but I've never claimed not to be petty sometimes.
  12. My 75 year old black Mother is vehemently against The Color Purple's existence. I think she hates the dour and painful subject matter. I'm 39 and I'm not interested in the film either. Just giving my two cents on the matter as a black woman.
  13. I'll say this, WB had balls spending 100M on a musical with such depressing subject matter. I didn't get banned from this forum. I dropped that account because it was connected to a Twitter account that did get banned and other reasons. I forgot my password and I was told that I could find it but I just didn't want to keep that account anymore.
  14. The thing is The Color Purple crawling to 100M still isn't going to make it a hit because the overseas numbers will be bad. That 100M budget is insane for a film the had poor international prospects.
  15. Oscar contenders don't matter as much as getting an actual Oscar nomination. He had a contender but was never guaranteed to get a nomination. Plenty of Oscar contenders have fell flat on their face. His talent isn't in question but I think it is fair to say that the extreme hype surrounding him sometimes verged on over the top. A lot of heavily hyped newcomers/break out actors have gotten a lot of crap over the hype but for some reason he didn't. I guess he just got lucky.
  16. Glad Majors was convicted on two counts. Marvel shouldn't recast they should just move on from Kang.
  17. I'm sure the terms aren't perfect and they'll have to negotiate even better terms on the AI thing in 3 years but it is a net positive that the strike is over.
  18. There really isn't anything to argue about. The Marvels had a chance to not be a hit but save a little face and it didn't. I still see fans on social media claiming that The Marvels word of mouth is great and yet every metric says that it is bad. Not mediocre but outright bad. No other film has broken out this Holiday season, if The Marvels word of mouth was great that would have effected the box office positively. I'm sorry but if word of mouth was great the film would be ending with 400+M not 215M.
  19. Not at all surprised to hear that. Marvel should have just done what people asked and instead of having to shove a new character in before Endgame at the last second, gave Black Widow her own movie.
  20. A lot of The Marvels fans wouldn't be as shocked as they are right now if they would have only listened to real people who pointed out the issues with the first film. That's what happens when you lump all critics together. There's a difference between not liking a movie for story and character reasons and not liking a film because you don't like that it is staring a woman. Two completely different trains of thought of yet they were seen as the same thing because films are seen as activism from certain people. Captain Marvel felt like a rushed project that only chose it's lead actress because she won an Oscar and not because she was actually right for the role. That sloppiness has come back to bite Marvel in the behind.
  21. As much as it annoys me to say, I do acknowledge that these all female team up films absolutely don't sale. Ghostbusters 2016, Charlie's Angels 2019, Terminator Dark Fate, Birds of Prey and The Marvels all either disappointed in Birds of Prey case or outright bombed, in all of the other films case. Female led action adventure movies do have more of an uphill climb but they can sale as evidenced by The Hunger Games franchise, Wonder Woman and yes Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel 2 with a mix gender team up like Thor Ragnarok had might not have saved the film because the bad MCU movies hurting the franchise would still exist but it might have helped matters more. The idea that Sue being the star of FF will harm the film is silly. Most of that team is made up of men and cool men at that. That's not even remotely similar to the films that I mentioned. Same with that Suicide Squad knock off and Captain America 4, which is starring a man. And indeed Eternals did not flop because it was starring a woman. It flopped because was boring and the film never convinced audiences that the Eternals not fighting Thanos made any sense. Marvel dropped the ball on Captain Marvel 2 with creative decisions that don't sale. They did everything wrong.
  22. Epics like Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon bomb all the time. Even before COVID films like that were a hard sell. Why would them bombing be as big news as the most successful franchise ever having a sequel drop 900M from its predecessor? Scorsese has never been a box office titan so who cares? Ridley Scott has been hit or miss his entire career so Napoleon bombing is not that sexy of a story. Marvel having their most unambiguous bomb since 2008 is a massively interesting news story and it is a massively more interesting story than those other two bombs.
  23. I don't see how having more uncreative executives on set would have saved The Marvels at the box office. Make better movies in the lead up to the film and stop acting like you can Thor Ragnarok everything. Not every MCU franchise should be turned into a comedy just because people adored Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. What about Winter Soldier? Why didn't they look into replicating what that film did for one of their characters?
  24. I have news for you. I've followed the box office for over 20 years. The Marvels is a nuclear level bomb like many nuclear level bombs this year. I have and never will claim that audiences like Carol, Monica and Kamala as characters because it is clear that they don't like Danvers and are, at best, indifferent to Monica and Kamala. Even without Ant-Man 3 getting horrible word of mouth and killing the last ounce of good will for the MCU The Marvels probably still would have dropped 40+ percent from the first film. The premise just wasn't good enough. I'm Left leaning and a woman and I personally do like the Kamala character but I rarely analyze box office numbers based on emotion. Some on the left and the right do nothing but that and that is their prerogative but that has nothing to do with me.
