  1. What is your prediction for how much How Do You Live will gross in China? The upper limit and lower limit? I guess the implication here is that Suzuki is going to market the film more aggressively in China, unlike his minimalist strategy in Japan?
  2. Spirited Away was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the BAFTAS. But that film is exceptional. I remember on UK TV some snobby people reviewed foreign film nominees on the 'BBC Four World Cinema Awards' though and Robert Carlyle said it was too Disney-like and preferred 'Triplettes of Belleville' which I thought was interestingly animated but not nearly as entertaining or enchanting as Spirited Away. They also preferred 'Goodbye Lenin' over Spirited, but which one is actually remembered today in critic polls? Certainly not Lenin.
  3. Any news on the weekend box office top 10 with totals?
  4. I think it has a good chance of being nominated for Best Animated Feature but not winning, sadly. It'll go to Spider-Verse. I don't think it has a chance at score either. Strange that it was more critically acclaimed than many of the films in Best Film but still didn't get a nod.
  5. I really hope the film wins one of the Golden Globes it was nominated for on Sunday. I know it isn't likely but Variety says they think it'll win in both categories. Wishful thinking!
  6. I love them, they look like they are almost a bit like the Chinese posters commissioned for Totoro and Spirited Away. However, I agree the art style is misleading.
  7. So, The Boy and the Heron made almost as much money on Monday as Aquaman? Astonishing given the screen difference (159 screens) and the fact more people would've heard of Aquaman. How many screens is Aquaman showing on? Is it a typo that Next Goal Wins made as much as The Hunger Games?
  8. Interesting thing about the UK is it will be released on IMAX screens on the 5th and the release will be expanded, too - so we might even see growth. Any predictions about Germany? It might do really well if it has done well in other big European countries.
  9. Isn't it strange how it is uniformly overperforming in every country? You'd expect perhaps a few regions where it would be doing well, but not across the board!
  10. Any way of finding out how much Boy Heron grossed so far?
  11. Although we say it underperformed but it was still the fifth highest-grossing film in Japan of 2023, so it wasn't that bad.
  12. Hopefully it has a long life at the UK box office and isn't just frontloaded or performing well because it is the Christmas period.
  13. Why is TBATH overperforming everywhere in the world except Japan? What could its final gross be in the UK?
  14. It is his best film next to or slightly behind Spirited Away. I might be in the minority but I found Mononoke to be too unrelatable and incomprehensible. I found Kiki and Totoro to be slightly too childish. Howl's Moving Castle was beautiful but the plot was all over the place with little reason to care.
  15. How many screens are Ferrari, Heron and Wish on? I still have the feeling if Heron had been given a normal release it would've broken out...
  16. Should all films increase from tomorrow until Sunday since it is the weekend? Or will they stay the same as it has been the holiday?
  17. GKIDS's release of Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron grossed $837K on Wednesday (from 900 locations). Total domestic gross stands at $32.62M. Good news. Interesting that it's Wednesday gross isn't much of a drop at all from when it had over 2000 screens. How could this be? Last Thursday it made $896,111 from 2,325 screens, this Wednesday 837k from 900. It is holding really well. I hope it can still make it past 35 mil, is 40 mil still possible? How many screens will it have for the weekend? Can it hold 900 or will more screens be taken?
  18. How can you see how many sites and the box office info? I think Miyazaki's other films got at most about 100 screens. I think they are expanding Heron because it is doing well. They tried putting Ponyo on 200 but it bombed. I really hope Heron has a long life at the box office here. They are putting it on more IMAX screens in January.
  19. The Boy and the Heron is doing well considering it is a limited release film. Imagine how well it would've done if they gave it the wide release it deserved. Perhaps it would've been in third place or even doing almost as well as Aquaman yesterday. I bet they're kicking themselves they gave it only about 100 screens. Consider this: Miyazaki's other films made about 1.1 million pounds in their entire runs and this made 700k in 2 days including previews. I saw this coming when I saw its box office result in France, the USA and Australia.
  20. I'm seeing they released Ferrari on 250 Odeon / Cineworld screens and Boy Heron on 30 and they come out with the same opening day. Hmm.
  21. So, I think the distributors (or cinemas, I don't really know how it works) really failed with 'The Boy and the Heron'. They gave it a limited release but Ferrari was released on a normal amount of screens, yet they had a similar opening day gross. This is the biggest opening day for a Ghibli film in the UK by far. Hopefully they'll expand it. How will they report the opening weekend of Ferrari and Boy Heron? Will they include all the days up to the weekend as part of the opening weekend as one lump figure ... so Tuesday, Wed, Thurs, Friday, Sat and Sun reported as one weekend? We might be looking at a 1 mil opening for Boy Heron if all the days are included together.
