Um, no. Prior to release it was not a sure thing. Many people were predicting 500s, some were hoping it could at least take number 1 for 2015. People obviously did not rule out beating Avatar but only a few bullish predictors went that way.

WW is nice and all for Avatar. Bland love stories and main characters that are essentially non-racial have universal appeal. But Avatar is not a part of the cultural fabric of anywhere.

SW is a part of the cultural fabric of the english speaking world.

The trailer views, the merchandising, disney granted a dying star wars fan his last wish (this was in nearly every newspaper), the big hypermarkets with nearly everything from toiletpaper, dinner plate, bed clothes to tooth brushes. Everything went full star wars. Even as an avatar fan i told my friends month ago that tfa will beat avatar dom wise, but ww wise it will keep the crown.

So TFA beating avatar dom wise didnt came as surprise for me.

The news in the US always reports domestic gross. You see the news that the US shows because well, you live in the US. But the news outside this country likely reports WW gross. And despite what you may believe BKB, the US only accounts for MAYBE 5% of the world's population.

At the end of the day, Avatar's WW gross = more money for the studio than Star War's WW gross. I think that's all they really care about when they're counting their millions and millions.

And since 6 years people only mentioned 2,79b $ . This is the number that counts. Everything else is made up bullshit.

    2,79b $

    2,79b $

    2,79b $

    2,79b $

Nevertheless i´m ok with tfa beating avatar dom wise, movie was great and it deserves every $ it gets.

I'm sorry, was I even talking to you?   I am not taking anything away from Avatar, I merely said that Star Wars was whooping it's ass domestically and there are a couple of people who are butthurt over it.  Of course Star Wars isn't going to beat it worldwide and I never said it would.

Some are under the impression that those who like Star Wars and are excited about it's current domination are only made up of people that hate Avatar and want it to go down.  I was just saying that I really enjoyed Avatar and would consider myself a huge Cameron fan.  I saw Avatar 5-6 times and 4 times in IMAX because I enjoyed it so much.  I also greatly enjoyed watching it climb all the way to the top and smash everything along the way.

That doesn't mean I can't also enjoy Star Wars and concurrently enjoy its equally impressive box office domination.  Nobody has seen anything like it and who knows if/when we will see anything like it again?

Dont get me wrong this was not against you. I'm happy for tfa, i liked that movie alot and its a behemoth domestic wise. But what pisses me off are the avatar haters who rooted six years for every movie that could beat avatar. And now after 6 years we have worth contender who will beat avatar (dom) and the haters went nuts, suddenly the only gross what counts is domestic. And all the milestones avatar achieved are mehhh.

Month ago i predicted that tfa will beat avatar dom but ww avatar will remain king.

I LIKE AVATAR!  I also LOVE CAMERON!

    But damn, get over it!

Get over what? Avatar will remain (probably) most successful movie of all time. Tfa will be the crownprince, grats to that achievement, since i liked that movie alot. But avatar will be still king of the world, no matter what. In case you forget "domestic ≠ world".

So damn it, get over it.

I'll help while you got to a computer ;)

It is a simple story and I don't mean that as an insult.  You have the poor guy that everyone still loves and roots for going with the woman that while has everything, doesn't have a real life and finds it instantly with him.  It's a couple most want and can root for, as they literally complete each other's lives.

Yes there was Leo-mania which just like the 3d for Avatar was ONE factor.  Not the main factor like some want to say for each movie.  But to say those are the ONLY reasons either of those movies did well is just purposely downplaying both movies and ignoring everything else.

You have the real story of the Titanic which has been romanticized and talked about ever since it sank.  There is a historical society, clubs and such that rival even the fanboy type stuff.  The real story of the band playing until the very end, the sinking itself, etc, etc.  Plus at one point the Titanic was the second most written about subject in books only behind some guy...what's his name...something to do with this holiday coming up...oh that's right JESUS!!!  Not a bad person to be in second place to on the list.

This doesn't even get into the work and effort and look of the movie itself that drew you into the time period.

I'll let baumer do the rest as I have to get going to see Star Wars again ;)

The problem with titanic, you have to watch it unbiased and without prejudice. I'm honest, in '97 i hated this movie and had only watched it for an half hour.

But some years later i watched the movie for the first time completely (and unbiased) and at the end i realized why people loved this movie so much and i also liked this movie and the more i watched it the more i began to love it. Titanic has this kind of magic which you cant describe.

Dont be pedantic. I don't think Jack was really proclaiming he was king of the world when standing on the bow. And I'll be happy when I see Cameron pen an ad to Disney saying congrats.

Why should he? Avatar will remain most successful movie of all time (probably).

  7. First of all, i'm a huge star wars since the 80ies and the tfa is among my most favorite movies of all time. But seriously, i dont get all this sw boxoffice hype. Even someone who is not so much into BO knew that this would be a monster. I'm absolutely not spurprised but this boxoffice run. We have a nearly 40 year built up hype, one of the most beloved franchise in  movie history and one of the most passionated fanbase. SW is also one of the most known trademarks worldwide.

On the other hand, i dont get it why people try to downplay avatars BO run. Beside titanic is this one of the most amazing, unprediticed runs ever. Except some crazy loonies ( and even they were mostly wrong) no one predicted this run.

I'm happy that tfa will be dom champ, but i'm also happy that avatar will keep the ww and alltime crown.

Its good to be a sw and avatar fan. :D

  8. GZ to my beloved dinosaurs. Will never forget when i saw jp for the first in cinema. I was 16 years old and sneaked to the cinema with some friends. We were on school vacation and our teacher didnt allowed us to leave the hostel. So we were till everybody was sleeping and sneaked out. Best memory of my life. JP will always have a special place in my heart.

    So happy for JW.

  9. The Godfather probably isn't the best counterexample to use, given the box office performance of its sequels.

Yes, keeping a stake in pop culture is how you maintain hype. Arguments and comparisons to the movie aside, the movie's visuals and characters haven't really done that. But my point was that Cameron is likely well aware of this, and it will be a moot point once the trailer for the first sequel hits.

When ever i talk about the current political situtation worldwide with some of my friends they came up with the quote from avatar "This is how it's done. When people are sitting on shit that you want, you make them your enemy. Then you justify taking it."

Nevertheless, the pop culture argument is one of the last clutch at straws among the haters. And trust me, all the people who say this movie will be forgotten until the release, are the same people who doesnt have enough balls to show up when they are proven wrong. Suddenly they disappear, and only came up, when they have enough backup from other haters. Always the same.

  10. It's not exactly penetrating pop culture the way The Dark Knight and Avengers are (You really don't see many Avatar gifs or memes these days, do you?).

LOL this is the most stupid argument ever  Those meme are so bad and so forced, worst memes ever, and since when the impact on pop culture determines the quality of a movie? I don´t see any godfather, Shawshank Redemption etc. memes anywhere. This pop culture arguement is one of the last clutch at straws among the naysayers.

After nearly 5 years everyone is still talking about avatar and you cant make a bo thread without someone mentioning avatar (good or bad). The avatar run and movie itself still bother the haters, they sill cant get over it. The fanboys still rave about this movie. It´s like those 5 years never happened, and yet we are still coming up with same stupid arguments. After reading all the movie and bo threads in the last 5 years, i can say without a doubt, avatar is the most discussed movie among moviegoers no matter in a good or bad way.

  11. What happens is Kal will disappear for awhile completely shell shocked as to how something like this could possibly have happened to "Juggernaught 2016", then we'll hear of an overdose because of it and authorities will find Kal's lifeless body painted blue clutching an autographed copy of AVATAR signed by Cameron himself..

If i remember correctly you are the one who disappeared for awhile (another bo-forum) completely shell shocked as how a movie about blue alien cat people have kicked your butt so hard, that after more than 4 years you are still butthurt, otherwise there is no explanation why you are still obsessed with this movie.

  12. I don't here anyone talk about Inception anymore, but If I was to say its been forgotten, Half the people on this site would have a meltdown and probably try hunting me down.

    Hahaha, so true :)

Funny thing is, haters are far more obsessed with avatar than the fans. After 4 years they still commenting every avatar news. So if avatar is dead like they claim in every post, how does it come they are still dealing with avatar and dont let it go?
