  1. There really is no need to manipulate its box office when it will make more than twice or triple its budget from China alone without fudging. Please don't associate the fudging of Ip Man 3's box office to wishing death to the franchise or the quality of the film. The Ip Man franchise is a highly respectable series in which many Chinese love the films. Yes, this is a black eye on Ip Man 3 but it should not be used as a target for the Ip Man franchise. The writers/director/actors did nothing wrong and the quality of their work should be respected.

  3. My first thought upon reading that is they might be fudging to compensate for releasing it so late when it should have opened during Christmas holidays. Sigh, it sucks that IM3 will now have a black mark to its name because of its shady box office.
  4. BvS is a Warner Bros. movie but Warner Bros. wouldn't have charged people so much if Disney hadn't gone off the rails and charged $250 in IMAX for Star Wars 7. Within the next 2 years, I could see an IMAX release costing $300 a ticket. In a double shot of Gerard Butler, it was Gerard action film vs. Gerard action-adventure film but in a twist, the sword and sandal flick came out the winner with its special effects and 3D prices. The mixed reviews for Gods of Egypt don't seem to be affecting the film just yet but with a noticeable difference between London's 4.1 score and Gods of Egypt's tepid 3.5 from users, we could see a switch coming as fast as Monday. The Danish Girl reeled off an increase after enjoying its post-Oscar bump. For Tom Hooper, this will be his 3rd straight 1m grosser while it will be Eddie Redmayne's 3rd 1m grossing film in HK. The Danish Girl will power ahead of The King's Speech by next week and it just goes to show how much distributor matters in HK. The King's Speech was distributed by Cable, a small distributor but The Danish Girl is EDKO's film, who are one of the bigwig local distributors in HK. The Mermaid passes 7m while Deadpool is closing in on The Dark Knight and Inception. The Mermaid is looking at 57m HK at the moment while Deadpool's final tally could be around 58.5m HK.

  6. Which is why they need to re-evaluate the home release strategy for Asia. If they cannot secure release dates within a specific time, they need to allow the studio to set the DVD release dates or have a rule stating that they cannot release within 3-4 months of its first theatrical release. It is really stupid that they would want to release the DVD/Blu-Ray 2 months after its opening day in theaters. You're just asking for people to watch it on the small screen instead. They need to leave a gap to make sure that the theatrical run is finished or almost finished. Waiting an extra month isn't going to kill anyone and it's not giving pirates an opportunity. Pirates would have uploaded within a few days of theatrical release anyways so there is no reason to shorten the window from theatrical release to DVD/Blu-Ray. It's not really a surprise when you think about it but expectations across the board were lowered after its extremely dull OWs in N. America and OS. That might have been what scared theaters off from ordering 3D too much because 3D market share was only 14% on Thursday. London Has Fallen did OK and will surpass the original's OW but it is a little disappointing to see it lose to Gods of Egypt. Theaters and Lark/UA (LHF's distributor) must be disappointed. Theaters were really pushing for London Has Fallen by gifting it the biggest screen on Thursday/Friday but it still lost. Strong hold for The Danish Girl. Post-Oscar bumps don't last long and in TDG's case the next few weeks will be unsettling to watch with major Hollywood films coming out every week. Another surprise is perhaps The Mermaid and Deadpool outmuscling The Finest Hours for the top 5. For The Finest Hours, it did not garner many admissions registering an average of 20 per showing. Room opened decently. With a low turnout from theaters, it did respectably. Spotlight re-entered the top 10 with its Oscar wins but if there wasn't much interest in this movie before even with Oscar nominations, then this resurfacing won't last very long. 7. I did but I was in a rush to post and I didn't have enough time to respond back then. I think it's a major disappointment that China delayed their release. It seems it's doing well in China so they got away with it and they'll make a profit overall with the theatrical release but I think this highlights that they need to revisit their home theatrical release policies especially in Asia in light of this situation. A studio should not have to beg each territories DVD distributor in order to get them to delay the DVD/Blu-Ray release because of a big country's theatrical release. If this was Disney, you know they would be asking for heads if Star Wars 7 DVD/Blu-Ray was out after 1-2 months. This also could shed some light on the Ip Man 3/Star Wars 7 fiasco during the Christmas holidays. It shows that Pegasus does not have the clout or influence that Disney has that allowed them to take advantage of theaters and schedule UA in 2 theaters including the biggest screens. I have no idea why HK Island did not show Ip Man 3 very often either. If Ip Man 3 was allowed to play like normal at UA and in HK Island, this would have for sure beaten Kung Fu Hustle for #1 local film of all time, grossed over 8m and could have possibly grossed 9m or more. I am still a little peeved that Star Wars 7 was allowed to play so long in the biggest theaters after so many places reported very bad pre-sales and admissions on opening weekend. It certainly was not the force it was made out to be. 9. They need to rectify the home release schedule then. It's crazy that they release DVDs/Blu-Rays only 2 months after the start of theatrical release. Actuals (up to Sunday) Deadpool - $6,955,454 Ip Man 3 - $7,753,355 The Mermaid - $6,497,433 Deadpool will pass 7m on Monday or Tuesday. Ip Man 3 will end up as the #3 local release of all time. Its run will end on Wednesday. The Mermaid is passing 6.5m on Monday. 7m will be breached by Sunday. Thursday schedules London Has Fallen will get the biggest screens and full day showtimes everywhere. Gods of Egypt has gotten mixed reception from theaters so far. Some will only show it on half day showtimes while others are going full throttle with full day showtimes in the 2nd largest theaters. The Mermaid falls to the 2nd or 3rd biggest screen and Deadpool sinks to #3 or #4 depending on The Danish Girl/The Finest Hours performance. The Finest Hours is cut down to half day showtimes. The Danish Girl will remain everywhere and retain most showtimes. Zoolander 2 is getting shut down or left on 1 showtime.
  10. That still does not make sense. Even if the DVD distributor sets the date, there should be a clause specifying that they cannot release before a certain date. I can't believe that Raymond Wong would miss something like this. China is the only big grossing market that will make or break Ip Man 3's gross. Without China, Ip Man 3 is a box office failure. There's something not right here because someone from China decided to delay the China release to March 4 then the Blu-Ray was supposed to come out on March 3? I don't agree with whoever said that they don't care about the China market. They DO care. They are basing their fortunes around China. They have to. Monday adm. Spotlight was the big winner today (obviously). One theater will add Spotlight into rotation on Thursday. Creed seems to have gotten a slight bump. At the top, The Finest Hours 'won' Monday but it is down 28% from Thursday's admissions. The Danish Girl is the only one of the top 5 that gained from Thursday's admissions though the increase is easily explained by the addition of 5 theaters on Saturday + post-Oscar jump. The Mermaid had a good hold and slipped 28% from Thursday admissions. That is down from last Monday's -18% drop from the previous Thursday's admissions. Similarly, Deadpool saw a bigger drop this week with Monday's admissions from Thursday admissions than last week. Last Monday saw it fall -38% while this week the gap grew to -45%. Of course, all the attention is currently on Oscar pics so drops should be higher than normal. Unfortunately for both they have come at a bad time with Thursday schedules directly influenced by Monday's admissions. Zoolander 2 is off a whopping -55% from last Thursday's admissions.
  11. Why don't they move the release date to April 19 or April 26 then it would have 7 or 8 weeks of uninterrupted play. My guess is that they moved it only 1 week back because people will still pirate after a few days of it being out so there's no point in delaying the Blu-Ray release until April.

Excellent weekend and score all around. Its score is also unchanged from opening day, a riveting 4.6/5. That's the 2nd Sunday that Deadpool went down by a lot from Saturday. The only explanation that I can offer is that Sunday is a day where families go out and watch something more family oriented or appropriate. Add that in with weaker night shows because of people going back to work on Monday and it's a double whammy. Zoolander 2 is falling hard. The Mermaid will have crossed 50m HK on Sunday and is looking good for 60m HK. Deadpool is so close to 7m and 60m HK is coming but next week sees 2 Gerard Butler films target its action audience and it could send Deadpool scurrying. The Finest Hours could not tap into its 3D surcharges for very long as many theaters switched to 2D on Saturday. The weekend itself is OK but its legs will be tested with action adventure films coming out beginning next week. Excellent start for The Danish Girl. Its opening weekend can be attributed to Tom Hooper, Eddie Redmayne, the controversial subject matter and wonderful reviews. Its run could extend by a few weeks if it wins some big Oscars. More theaters could pick this up depending on its Oscar performance and based on their own theater chain performance. Zoolander 2 fell flat on its face with poor reviews miring the sequel. The comedy market was coming off a big surprise in Dirty Grandpa plus you've got The Mermaid and Deadpool servicing bits and pieces of the comedy market so Zoolander 2 had to market itself beyond the nostalgia factor which it completely failed to do. This will leave with less than $500,000.

The Mermaid has the inside track on #1 with Sunday's increase. It will become the first Chinese language film to keep more than half of its 2nd week audience. The Finest Hours churned out an OK weekend despite most theaters changing from 3D to 2D on Saturday. Deadpool had a good weekend but it seems like 8.5m is the ceiling. The hold itself does not really help with next weekend when the double bill of Gerard Butler opens. Excellent opening for The Danish Girl. This could even get a boost from The Oscars and even more theaters could pick this up on Thursday. Poor for Zoolander 2.

  22. How badly will piracy hurt Ip Man 3 in China? Can its box office withstand the effects of piracy there especially since it will have been out for more than 2 months around the world? And what about the non-nationalistic themes of the film? Do you think Chinese audiences will reject the film because it doesn't play up the nationalistic pride that the first 2 films had? I am slightly concerned that it won't do as well because of this and it will turn in a 'generic action movie' performance with the piracy and no nationalist pride theme.
