Don't know if Weathering With You is going to break the top 10 of all time.

Corpse said 50-50. I would agree. Depends on how it holds after Obon and after summer is over.

I want it to get there, cause the movie was sooo good. Not as spectacular as Your Name, but almost there. It actually had similar structure and feels as Your Name, but with different theme and different elements as plot devices, and also a bit darker. I think that's the only thing that bothered me. At times, it's a little too depressive for me. Other than that, stunning visuals, emotional and engaging story. Also,

    Spoiler

I didn't know that WwY took place in the same universe as Your Name. So I was surprised by the cameos of Taki and Mitsuha, the main characters of YN. The crowd was surprised as well. They cheered and clapped when both of them showed up and interacted with the main characters of WwY.

Wow. That's a challenge and a half. Lol

Really? That's not a challenge at all. I mean, for people who understand English well enough like me. The point is, I don't find subtitles distracting at all. I guess we are "trained" since we were little to read subtitles when we watch movies. Because almost all foreign movies here in Indonesia are not dubbed in our own language, including kids movies. Unless it's for TV broadcasting, then kids movies are sometimes dubbed.

Subtitles can be distracting when the movie is in my own language though. For example, an Indonesian movie with English subtitles. But I can still ignore the subtitles, and sometimes they help if I can't hear the dialogues. So really, watching a foreign movie with subtitles is not that hard. If we can do it, then you can too.

So things seem to go this way for what the top 10 of highest grossing films could be:

    1. Frozen 2 - ¥18B / ¥19B ($180M / $190M)

    2. Weathering With You - ¥16B / ¥17B ($165M)

    3. Aladdin - ¥11.9B ($111M)

    4. Toy Story 4 - ¥11B ($103M)

    5. Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire - ¥9.4B ($86M)

    6. The Lion King - ¥8.1B ($75M)

    7. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - ¥8B ($74M)

    8. Avengers: Endgame - (¥6.1B ($55M)

    9. Kingdom - ¥5.7B ($51M)

    10. One Piece Film Stampede - ¥5.5B ($52M)

    Maybe 2020? --> Cats (2019) - ¥6.6B ($57M)

Forgive me guys if i did something wrong 😛

Some corrections, if that's okay 😁, because:

    1. Detective Conan has already cross ¥9B and will have  a 4DX re-release.

    2. TS4 will cross ¥10B.

    3. One Piece is a frontloaded franchise.

    4. SW9 will increase from SW8.

    5. I'm not even sure Cats will be released in 2019.

Getting near ¥20B is a tall order for Frozen 2, but not impossible, so I didn't change that.

Also, this is a calendar year ranking (Jan-Dec 2019). A Japanese yearly ranking will be much different since SW9 will be counted as a 2020 release, and maybe Frozen 2 too. And Fantastic Beast 2 is counted as a 2019 release.

I think that China has different standard when it comes to Hollywood stars. They are not supposed to look ordinary and that extends to first Asian SH.

He's not ugly, just regular. I wouldn't call Cap, Thor, Killmonger, Aquaman, etc regular.

Wait, what?? I'm Asian and I think Liu is very handsome. He's as good looking as Hemsworth, MBJ, Momoa, and other male MCU/DCEU actors. Definitely not regular.

Honestly, I find this whole discussion absurd, especially about how Liu doesn't meet this so-called "standard".

I'm very interested to watch it in English. I got the gist of what was happening, and I'm not sure it reaches the heights of Your Name. But it was engaging, even not understanding, and the animation was stunning.

I will go to an early screening of WwY tomorrow before its official release next week. I know it will hard for it to reach Your Name's level, but sounds like it's still a great movie. So excited!

Close to 3 whereas TLK was closer to 4 last time I checked.

I honestly do not understand why TS4 didn't get a higher score in Japan. It's even lower than TLK as of now. With better reception, TS4 could've easily outgrossed Aladdin. Although, before its release, I didn't expect it to match TS3 in yen at all. So it's still doing way better than I thought.

  7. So if the estimates hold, it will be the 2nd biggest aggregate weekend ever. I hope it stays there with actuals, because that's really amazing! Considering that:

    1. The #1 on that list was helped by huge previews for SW3. Excluding that, this past weekend would have been the biggest one ever.

    2. If I remember correctly, ticket prices in Japan only increased 1 time in 26 years, and the increase was only ¥100, so inflation is close to none.

Also, Obon week has begun, and I'm excited for the box office numbers.

  8. So I guess it's safe to say that both WWY and TS4 have survived One Piece and TLK. It even looks like they are gonna have better drops compared to last week.

Also, about One Piece's box office explosion, I also think it's because the quality of the movies increased significantly starting with Strong World. They changed from passable TV movies to much more eventful cinematic ones. Gold did decrease from Z, so we'll see how Stampede will do in the end.

As for Detective Conan, I still have no idea how they managed to grow each year and transform from a fan-driven ¥2-3B series, into a ¥9B blockbuster series. Surely, with this year's movie, it has reached its peak, right?

One Piece OD Friday: 234,881 (12.4% higher than Weathering With You OD)

Lion King OD Friday: 133,862 (8.5% lower than Toy Story 4 OD)

Great for One Piece, and good for TLK. Also, am I seeing this right? TS4 only dropped 11.5% and WWY 9% from last week despite One Piece and TLK opening. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but it's looking good for all four of them.

Early rumblings are that One Piece might have the biggest opening Friday of the year?

And that The Lion King is probably not going to make over 1 billion yen Saturday + Sunday.

I won't be surprised with the first one. One Piece franchise is frontloaded, so whatever day its OD is, it's gonna be huge. And since other Friday openers were not that frontloaded (hence, relatively low OD), it's easy for One Piece to have the biggest opening Friday.

The second one is kinda surprising for me. I mean it'a not a princess story like BatB or Aladdin, but I thought the popularity of the musical would give TLK the same opening as those two.

It's undoubtedly a little disappointing as its chances of becoming the #1 Hollywood movie ever in admissions were growing and a few days have been enough to blow them away. There's a big difference between "movie x is a disappointment" (Aladdin's total gross is the opposite of that) and "movie x's final legs were disappointing" (which in this case is just an implementation of the meaning of the word).

Not really. When Aladdin started to have incredible holds, people here already said that movies with legs like Aladdin would eventually have a big drop, and once it falters, it would never recover. Same thing happened with Frozen. So this is expected, not a disappointment. Maybe your expectation just too high.

That 478k number is including Fri too. Then where we can see top 20 movies at the JPN box office other than Mimorin including all theaters cume?

    Also Tokyohive: https://www.tokyohive.com/article/2019/08/japan-box-office-report-8-38-4-2019

Oh okay. That 505k was only Sat and Sun. Weekend numbers on Japanese sites are always for Sat and Sun only. Unless it's a new opener, and it opens on Friday, then they usually will give both numbers, the 3-day and 2-day weekend.

And to answer your question: nowhere. We only have Corpse, who kindly give us numbers for the top 10 every week, because he/she has access to the data. Sometimes for movies outside the top 10 too. But other than that, we can only get box office numbers from reports or news or articles or twitter feeds, even then not all movies are available.

I have a question guys, I checked mimorin it says that WEATHERING movie sold 478k Admissions but then I checked TokyoHive or basically Jpn BO Sites, it says that WEATHERING sold 505k Admissions. Why there's difference? Also isn't 1400 Yen the ATP for most of the movies? Thanks in advance

First of all, where did you get 478k? The weekend number for last weekend (Sat-Sun) on mimorin site was 340,211. Second of all, this is just partial, only from main theater chains, not all theaters. It's about 65-70% of the whole admissions. So it makes sense that the total admission for the weekend was 505k.

Ticket prices vary between movies. For TS4 it's around ¥1300, for WWY around ¥1360 and for Hobbs & Shaw around ¥1500.

This weekend isn't doing very good for all the holdovers

WwY dropped about 29%(best hold among top 10)

    TS4 - 33%

Actual number may vary as usual.

Since we're in the summer season and movies make more on weekdays than weekends, I think we should look at weekly drops rather than weekend drops to determine how good they're performing.

Grace Randolph is great and I don't know why you have her on that list. She is great

Of course you would love her. She's extremely bias in her "analysis", ignoring facts that contradict her narative, misleading her viewers/followers, and borderline a conspiracy theorist. Don't forget her hate towards women in movies, especially, for some reason, Jessica Chastain. :hahaha:

I am quite partial to Yoona 😍 So I'm gonna try to follow EXIT's performance. Looks to be a break out. Already scheduled to be released in other countries per Korean fans on Twitter.

EXIT is already at 2M admissions

    https://twitter.com/CJENMMOVIE/status/1157592805679648769?s=19

P.S. Early predictions had this as a 10M hitter based from Korean reactions. It's performing almost the same with the top heavy hitters as noted by Korean media.

It's gonna be released in Indonesia on the 21st of August. Limited theaters like all Korean movies before that, only in CGV. The benefit of having CGV here is they release Korean movies, especially the big ones like Extreme Job and Parasite this year, and now Exit.

Btw Parasite is having a great run in its limited release here. It started unnoticed, only Korean lover and those who knew its Palm d'Or win were excited for it, like me. So I saw it at an early screening, and loved it, one of the best I've seen. Because this was more like a "festival film", I thought it would only be released in a short period of time. But then the WOM kicked in and it went viral on social media. Even my best friend who knew nothing about Korean movies suddenly asked me about it, so I went to see it again with him. It is now the biggest Korean movie in Indonesia with more than 450k admission. A very high number for a non-Hollywood imported film. And it is still playing right now after 7 weeks, longer than most Hollywood movies.

Wait. I thought movies normally opened on Saturdays in Japan. But Hobbs and Shaw is out right now (it's Friday in Japan).

And on August 9th, another Friday, One Piece Stampede and The Lion King are also opening.

    What's up with this?

Yeah normally movies opened on Saturday. But recently, big movies are starting to open on Friday. Endgame, Aladdin, FFH, TS4, WWY all opened on Friday. Come to think about it, how many movies actually opened on Saturday in the last 4 months or so? Not many I'm guessing.

how is it doing in Indonesia. Any comparison to F8.

Well I don't have access to any data. But another poster here who does, made an early prediction:
    OD $1.46-1.62M
    OW $7.6-8.5M

I think F8 made $8.5M on OW, so looks like it is unlikely for H&S to open bigger than F8. Understandable since it's a spin off. And F8 had the biggest OW and the biggest total ever at the time.

  19. Are the cameos part of spoilers? They really surprised me in a very exciting way. Did not expect it at all. I was like, "Am I seeing this right? That can't be right." 😂. It did feel like some kind of crossover, because to me they belong to a different universe lol.

Yeah they did that so casually, like they didn't care at all 😂. Anyway, like I said before, it's a super fun and entertaining movie, funnier than the usual F&F movies. Some cheesy lines/moments, but the movie never takes itself seriously, so it's fine. The 3 main characters also have great dynamics.
