will finish on RT about 20 points lower than TS4 and will lose the Animated Feature Oscar to it. Who would have thought that originally?

Many of us did. I mean, did you expect Frozen 2 to be at Toy Story level, RT-wise? Frozen barely got over 90% on RT. It would be hard for the sequel to top that. Meanwhile, TS3 is at 98%. It was more likely for TS4 to get higher RT score than Frozen 2. I didn't want to make this Pixar vs WDAS. I just wanted to show how clueless that statement was.

Awe, how come a decline in Japan?

Well the first one hit ¥25B or around $250m, 3rd biggest of all time. It's a very rare phenomenon. It reached that number with super crazy legs. In fact, no movie will ever reach that height without those kind of legs. So to exceed the first movie, it needs to perform the same, legs-wise, which is almost impossible. But who knows. Never say never.

I've wondered about this but is the reason why Spirited Away still the highest grossing movie in Japan and most attended one at the box office due to inflation and/or exchange rates? It's still at 30 Billion Yen, Frozen managed to pass it but it's at 25 Billion Yen.

Okay first of all, it's in YEN. Why would exchange rates matter? Second of all, inflation in Japan is close to zero. Ticket prices only went up once in the last 26 years. So the answer to your question, is no.

The first one has 6x legs, what do you think about the legs of this one?

Can a movie with bad review but still have good legs?

Legs depend on how the general audience enjoy the movie, regardless of reviews from the critics. So bad-reviewed movies could still have good legs. But if you're asking this for Frozen 2, the early reception/reviews for it aren't even close to being bad lol.

Maleficent 2 highest grossing Disney Live Action in Malaysia beating The Lion King. Didn't see that coming.

Yeah, it's also the 2nd highest grossing Disney live action in Indonesia beating TLK and BatB. Didn't expect that at all. Somehow Maleficent became even more popular than when the 1st movie came out. So popular that people (including local celebrities) dressing as Maleficent went viral on social media.

Aladdin is still the most surprising thing here this year. Followed by Joker.

box office mojo didn't update lion king southeast asia country box office for long time,so I'm not sure if lion king cross 10m in indonesia

There are no more updates because it's clearly done. BOM even provides TLK's weekend numbers in Indonesia. The last update was $9.07m with $600 weekend. So I know for sure it didn't cross $10m. Anything else you want to correct?

biggest animaterd movie in indonesia is The Lion King

That's technically true lol. And even TLK couldn't cross $10m. I have to say though, in people's perception here, TLK is not an animation. And in this case, perception matters. Since most people consider TLK as "live action", it doesn't have that stigma, while Frozen 2 does. So it's not exactly in the same category.

  8. Yeah, even for other movies, we don't really feel the buzz until the week they're released, or even until the opening day. Let alone an animated movie. Unless it's a big franchise movie like MCU.

Also, animated movies are not that popular in Indonesia. There's still a stigma that they are made for kids only, especially Disney princess movies. I think the biggest one is Minions with $8.7m, then Incredibles 2 with $8m and TS4 with $6.3m. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But I do know that a lot of people are excited about Frozen 2. Its popularity has risen exponentially since the first movie. So I don't know, maybe it's gonna be the first one to cross $10m, or maybe adults here are not ready to embrace a Disney princess movie yet.

There was an Indonesian thread  created by @catlover for Indonesia.

On separate note, I think it is quite safe to say that Endgame is on top of all time chart in every countries of south east asian like a clean sweep with huge margin .

It was @newbie BO buff who created it. But now he's busy with his box office related twitter account and his movie-rating application (which also has weekly movie admission numbers). So the thread is not updated, since he's the one who has all the data.

when we can see War online? I'm very curious about this one.

Saw it here in the theater. The movie's a bit too long, but really entertaining. I had a fun time. Story-wise, nothing special, but enough to keep me interested. The over-the-top scenes were still within my limit of fun, rather than stupid. I understand why it became such a huge success in India.

Saaho on the other hand, is indeed terrible.

I also thought it will release in March like 2014 but maybe they want to maximize Thanksgiving and Christmas  holiday rather than just wait 10 weeks from March until Golden Weeks.

But there are no Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays in Japan. Only Year-End/New Year holiday. They could capitalize that, but then it has to compete with Star Wars, another Disney movie. Maybe Disney just needs the money as early as possible.

  12. In Indonesia, Joker had an unusually small drop in its 2nd week. FYI we don't have published FSS numbers here, only weekly numbers, so we can only do drops for the daily gross average in each week.

That 39% drop is rare, since most movies have more than 50% drops in their 2nd weeks. Recent examples:

    TLK - 56.65%

    FFH - 59.86%

    IT 2 - 62.05%

    FF:H&S - 72.40%

With this drop, Joker will make more than many superhero movies. And that is surprising because we are obsessed with action and big visual CGI spectacles (that superhero movies usually offer). And here a heavy, dark movie with less actions and more drama will be among the biggest Hollywood movies of all time. It could be as high as #9 if it keeps dropping this small, beating Civil War. But #12 is more likely since Maleficent is coming to take many of its screens.

seems like into the unknown is the one they want to replicate Let it Go's success. sounds ok. kinda has a Go The Distance vibe.

Not sure about that. Looks like this song will appear early in the movie, and as much as I love the snippet, it doesn't seem to have the same weight as Let It Go, lyric-wise. I believe there is another song called Show Yourself. I know nothing about it, except that it's a duet, but that sounds more like the new Let It Go. But then again, Into the Unknown will have a pop version, so maybe it is the song.

  14. Saw it yesterday. Loved it. Yeah there were slow parts, especially at the beginning. But overall didn't feel like an almost-3-hours movie. Bill Hader was indeed a standout, but honestly all of them were great. And once again, Skarsgard was a perfect Pennywise. To me, it wasn't as scary as the first one, but it was more disturbing in a way that makes you uneasy and uncomfortable. Although, my friend who was with me thought some of the "forms" that Pennywise appeared in were ridiculous, so he found it laughable. He has a weird sense of humor so, I don't know.

Anyway, the story and characters definitely were the focus in the movie, and that's why I loved it. Good balance of horror, thriller, and drama with sprinkles of comedy.

Is it really so hard to understand that I'm perplexed how one doesn't know oneself after years of movie going to be able to make up ones own mind? You watch 2-3 trailers, see a few TV spots and you can't figure out for yourself if it might be good. You need some "pro" reviewer(s) aggregate score? The word of your own friends or co-workers isn't good enough?

    It's actually that simple.

Oh I understand you, very well. In fact, I too don't let the critics dictate what I like and what I don't, what I should see and what I shouldn't. But I also get why people rely on critics, because they are percieved as more credible than their friends or co-workers. Also, I didn't say critics review is the only factor. It's just one of many. Of course the trailers, WOM, and other things are also considered in the decision making. To me, reading reviews of a movie is not that important, but to many, it is the main selection process. That's what I was trying to say.

I don't get the folks who feel the insistence on doing research of critics before seeing a movie.

Seriously, you've been watching films for how long? You do or don't know your own personal taste and preferences? Sure, has the marginal films trailer been deceptive at times? Seen all the good jokes in the trailer? On occasion that happens but I sometimes I get a sour grape in the bunch of sweet ones.

I'd say I walk out of a theater 90% of the time or better feeling ok with my choice and dollar spent to varying degrees.

I can mentally prepare myself and expectations for Greatest Showman vs Tomb Raider vs Infinity War vs Won't You Be My Neighbor

Is it really that hard to understand? Most people don't have enough money to see every movie that they want to see. So they have to be selective. Only choose the ones that are worth the money. One of the selection processes is checking the reviews from the critics. If the reviews are good, then there's a bigger chance that they will enjoy the movie, than when the reviews are bad. That's not always the case, but it's another problem. It's actually that simple.

Jada Pinkett Smith either got a monetary amount that she couldn't refuse, or her ego may not be as huge as I thought it would be 🙂. Married to one of the (formerly)biggest actors in hollywood. Very picky and particular guy too.

The way she exited this movie 🙂...I imagined her vetoing that, and demanding a bigger, more heroic script 🙂

Dont want to spoil anything, but she was...discarded...like a $60,000 earning D-lister 🙂...

Anyways it was what it was...a testosterone fueled (you stay home and raise the kid 😂!) bullet flying actioner. Good villain. By the 6000th fired bullet you begin to fatigue, but worth a look.

Yeah, I expected more from her. I thought she's gonna be the Tommy Lee Jones of this movie.

But the movie was fun. I enjoyed it a lot more than London. Kinda surprised it opened as big as London though. I thought it would decrease like most sequels. With better reception, it could have better legs, and outgross it in the end.

Also, over billion Mulsims in the world yes but I'm talking about % that watch movies. I don't recall OS boxoffice ever emphasizing the power of Pakistan, Middle East, Somalia, etc markets. It's always China, SK, Latam, Europe, Oz which are decidedly very low in Muslim population.

I'm sorry, I just need to say this, cause I think you are missing some facts. Of all the countries you mentioned, you forgot two that have the 1st and 3rd most Muslim population in the world, and also big markets for movies: Indonesia and India. Do you know how many people saw Endgame in the theaters in those 2 countries combined? More than 30 million. Around 13-14m are Muslims. Not to mention Pakistan, which I assume in the millions as well. So yeah, still a lot.
