eh. not hitchcock's best...though i seem to be saying that about a lot of hitchcock to be honest. it had ups and downs...after an okay beginning we end up with marnie's mother and cousin(?) in an unbearably awful family scene with terrible dialogue and acting. then after meandering for a while it shoots back up to excellence with the theft scene that wonderfully feels completely distinct from the rest of the movie. near the end there's a kind of cool absurdist flashback, but that's immediately followed with a hackneyed ending where the lady wants to stay with the near psychopathic man who raped her. lol.

as is often the case (disclaimer: in my opinion) hitchcock combines a fascinating plot with characterisation that almost borders on ineptitude. i mean it clearly wasn't supposed to imitate a real life story but it was insanely stupid at times. never dull though.
