Compare Grosses by Purchasing Power Rather Than Ticket Sales.

Recommended Posts

Let's compare three 2016 movies that have mostly run their course.

1. Deadpool: $362,781,653

2. Zootopia$335,043,645

3. Batman vs. Superman$328,843,925

If we go to 1998 ticket prices via http://boxofficemojo.com, we get:

1. Deadpool$198,303,700

2. Zootopia$183,141,600

3. Batman vs. Superman$179,752,700

However, if we take the 2016 totals and convert them to 1998 dollars overall, we get this:

1. Deadpool$247,200,000

2. Zootopia: $228,000,000

3. Batman vs. Superman: $224,000,000

So what should we keep in mind? The amount of tickets sold, or the amount of money that audiences shelled out for entertainment?

By the way, all of those latter totals are higher than Saving Private Ryan, the #1 1998 release domestically, with about $216.5M

There's never going to be a perfect comparison so I think it's best to just keep it simple. Adjusting by ticket prices gives a better idea of just how many people saw a movie, even if they didn't actually pay the same thing for it.

Hey, I'm merely proposing an alternative view.
