Blankments
Released in Germany in October 2015, and in the U.S. in April of this year, Look Who's Back is shockingly prescient for a film that was filmed before Donald Trump's campaign announcement. A disturbing yet often humorous look at how evil can return from depths forgotten and reclaim a place of power. Oliver Masucci's Hitler travels Germany, talking to real people in a Borat-like style, and people shockingly agree with him. They want the immigrants gone; they're tired of left-wing liberals not caring about them. Besides his charisma, Hitler also really entertaining to watch on TV, appearing on talk shows and comedy sketches to spread his message to an amused audience. Everyone thinks he's a comedian pretending to be Hitler, ignoring the sinister aspects of who he is and what he is representing. As he reminds us near the film's climax, in 1933, he was elected because it was the people wanted, and if it happens again, it'll be the people's will. A powerful piece of satire that's already become more reality than could ever be expected, Look Who's Back is an incredible film that might (sadly) be the most relevant of 2016. It's a warning that the U.S. and the U.K. did not heed, and the rest of the world falls in danger of ignoring too. This film represents a force of what cinema must be in the coming years; a condemnation of the evil men who rise to power, while remaining both entertaining and thought-provoking. Truly a fascinating film.
