filmlover
An effective movie, if not one heavy on depth. I bought the struggle that this family was going through thanks entirely to the performances than I did from the script, which kinda just leaps into the action without really providing the details necessary to truly feel for their plight. That said, this is a much better movie about a family dealing with a drug addict son than the recent, similarly-themed Beautiful Boy, as it mostly avoids melodrama or cheap sentiment. Julia Roberts is commanding and vulnerable in equal measure in a performance that stands among her very best. Lucas Hedges continues to prove he can really do no wrong with yet another fantastic turn (this time under the guidance of his father). It’s a fairly depressing movie and one that could’ve used some fine tuning (especially in the second half when it takes on somewhat of a thriller element) but it does enough right that it’s worth watching just for the masterful lead performances.
