Gripping true story thriller that isn't as basic as the trailer made it look. While this is an unusually conventional project for him, Todd Haynes manages to avoid going for the easy "Hollywood" route and keeps things arresting without it ever feeling like a procedural (those statistics in the postscript might be the most bone-chilling thing in a movie this year). Also helps that he's attracted a sensational cast: while he could play this kind of role in his sleep, Mark Ruffalo effectively humanizes the role of the determined good-hearted lawyer who goes after the evil corporation, while talented folks like Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber, and Bill Pullman all provide effective support. B+
