Tomas Vyskocil
Hi there, i am new here, i got here from searching for polish "box office". I was amazed that there is a special forum only for Box Office with such a history! Great, now I will become a regular visitor! My question is - where do I find YEARLY box office for Poland, for year 2016. There's no data for Poland for 2016 at boxofficemojo.com, so is there any special page (in Polish, it's OK) to find out? Thanks T.

Tomas Vyskocil
Hi Pypa94, thank you for the warm welcome! I guess I can start a special thread about Czech Republic Box Office, I've got plenty of data. I have my own website www.kinomaniak.cz which is focused on Czech Box Office with small overview of other countries. So far I was able to get mostly US Box Office, but I am interested in other countries. Poland is on my scoop right now Thank you for the yearly polish data. This overview is great, do you know if there is a table with not just attendance, but revenues as well? I found out that there is a special website boxoffice.pl which gathers these type of data, but it is blocked for free users. I guess these are official data source for whole market? Pypa94
yes boxoffice.pl has that kind of data but they sell it only to websites like sfp.org.pl or pisf.pl maybe Filmweb.pl too from what I know. I asked about daily numbers a guy from sfp.org.pl but he told me that they get only weekend numbers and only admission. If somehow we have access to their data, well I'd be El Dorado ;p About revenues there are avaible on boxofficemojo.com as you already know and on sfp.org.pl site where they are publishing their magazine, magazine has box office in the end and it's 2 months behind so 1/2017 from January has numbers of November. Here is the link to it: https://www.sfp.org.pl/magazyn_filmowy,81.MF_01_2017_www.html. There is data about November as I said. And here is link to all magazines: https://www.sfp.org.pl/magazyn_filmowy
Pypa94
I've visited your site and it's really impressive I like it very much altought I don't manage in Czech as well as you in Polish ;p But from what I saw in 2016 you had big local hit over 950k admission - considering population - it would mean more than 3,5 mln admission in Poland, that's impressive a lot! Last movie above 3 mln was Avatar in 2009/2010.
Pypa94
You probably know website insidekino.de - I used to take numbers from there actually some older data I still use their site - but they haven't been updating for a while. There is also website lumiere.obs.coe.int with cume admission number for particular movie from day it has debut until the year before now.
Tomas Vyskocil
So it means that boxoffice.pl is "for professionals". Is this some kind of organization responsible for gathering box office data? We've got something similar in the Czech Republic too, but thankfully, lot of their data are free to download at their website, paid access is only for distributors and cinema owners where they can drill data in any way possible. About the boxofficemojo. I don't know how about polish data, but I found some weird currency ratios when i tried to convert from dollars to local currency, so i prefer original data in original currency. I know insidekino.de and lumiere.obs.coe.int, especially the other one has really impressive database from european point of view. But the main value is still attendance, I like to know the revenue also And thank you about the thumbs up about my website, it's quite new but i was able to gather almost all major data about the Czech box office so far. And yes, there was a smash hit last year, local fairy tale called Andel Pane 2. Almost 1 million admission and still gathering solid attention, so it will be among TOP 10 of all time (counting since 1990). Avatar is still better, but local number one is another Czech movie. 7 out of 10 movies in TOP 10 are Czech movies, only Avatar, Titanic and Jurassic Park were able to compete. How is so far situation in Poland? I was able to crack some articles and it seems that overall attendance is going up and market is in good shape. But I guess it is no match to attendance before 1990? And how about comparing to last twenty years?
Pypa94
We don't have any data before 1989 and difficult to get data even to 2005 or so. In 60s there was big local hit Krzyżacy which was played I guess year or two with incredible 32 mln attendace! Literally everyone that time saw it. But I have no idea how accurate that number is. After 1989 in TOP 10 attendance top 3 are local - Ogniem i mieczem over 7 mln, Pan Tadeusz over 6 mln and Quo Vadis over 4 mln next we have 5 movies over 3 mln - Avatar, Titanic, Passion of the Christ, Shrek 2, Shrek The Third and in top 2 we have also Star Wars VII with couple thousand below 3 mln and another local movie Listy do M.2. These days with so many premieres movies over 3 mln are super mega hit and I expect that in 2017 maybe 2 or 3 movies (Listy do M.3, Pitbull 3 and Star Wars VIII) But overall in last 3 year we have incresing attendance year-to-year with first year after 1989 with more than 50 mln admission! Generally we love local romantic comedies, Tolkien, SW, Pitbull, Bond, other local movies more drama and of course animations. We don't like comicbook movies as rest of the world (well not as much yet) Best period in year is Valentine's Day weekend (OW record is over 830k of 50 Shades of Grey) and week with Boxing Day and until New Year. Worst is Easter weekend and weekend just before Christmas or with Christmas Eve or something (before SW VII 2nd worst was weekend before Christmas like 15th or 17th but it has changed with SW francise). From Easter till September is rather weak time because of good weather and holidays - kids don't have time for cinemas, many people want rest in the country and so on. What I want from my box office in my country - well I dream about 4 mln movie but now there now such movies like 3 at the top which are based on book you have to read in school and that time all school were going to see Ogniem i mieczem or Pan Tadeusz. Nowadays I think shot for 4 mln has Avatar 2 or next one if the latter will be good, maybe Star Wars IX or next Listy do M. movie (4 or 5 if they do it someday), maybe return to Shrek francise has potency or great screen adaptation of well known character Wiedźmin (The Witcher). I hope for 2017 year better than 2016 maybe 55 mln tickets but why not 60 mln

Tomas Vyskocil
I'm not suprised about big numbers from old hits. Attendance in 50s and 60s was extreme in the Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia too. With the rise of the communism people were "forced" to see the propaganda movies, there was no foreign competition, TV was very expensive and full of crappy shows. Almost every movie from that era had 1-2 million admission. I see a decline of popularity in the 70s and then even bigger decline in 80s http://kinomaniak.cz/navstevnost-kin/historicka/graf/ Current attendance is no match for these numbers, but there is a positive growth for last few years. Final numbers for 2016 will be released next week, but it's expected to be over 14 milions, best results since 1994. http://kinomaniak.cz/filmovy-trh/pocet-divaku/ When I see the biggest polish hits since 1989, it feels very familiar, you guys also have deep touch for your own movies. I admire polish sense for national pride and for film adaptations of your classic books, the biggest modern hits in the Czech Republic are local fairy tales (which - so far I know - are not shown in rest of the world) and then this special mix of comedy/drama (it is correct you have special word for this - "czech movie"? weird film you would not understand? I am quite suprised with polish popularity of Shrek. American animation movies are very popular in the Czech Republic too, but it seems we love more anything from Universal/Illumination - Despicable Me, Minions, Secret Life of Pets and Fox/Blue Sky - Ice Age franchise. Besides these and obvious hits like Avatar or Titanic there's strong fanbase of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. We do not celebrate comic book movies either, the most popular one so far is Deadpool, I guess we have a soft spot more for antiheroes than heroes. Star Wars is a special one. The Force Awakens was a smash hit, but I am little bit disappointed by Rouge One results. It will not probably reach yearly TOP 10 at all and was overrun by local hit Andel Pane 2 released two weekes before Rogue One premiere. And yes, Fifty Shades of Grey is also the biggest opening so far, i' m quite anxious about numbers of Fifty Shades Darker, if the popularity is still strong with this franchise. For this year I predict some huge numbers for two local hits, then Despicable Me 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and hopefully Star Wars Episode 8 with return of the old cast. I guess I should start the Czech Republic thread and not to spam yours
