Jake Gittes
Rolled with it for a good long while but finally went "oh come ON" when the djinn came to London and all of a sudden couldn't bear the technology, as opposed to the magical exotic Istanbul where I guess they don't have TVs and cell phones. The best parts are all in the hotel room, Swinton actively engaging with Elba and trying to find out what the catch is. The effects are occasionally creative (the djinn's size when he first appears) but mostly just kinda deadening rather than evocative/transporting.
SLAM!
I enjoyed this! It mixes “magical” with “grounded” well.
