CAYOM Year 9: Box Office Weekend Actuals

Recommended Posts

After a delay in our regular programming, it is time to restart the machine and reveal month by month the weekend actuals for Year 9.

Special Thanks to @YM! for providing holdover data for Year 8 films.

January will be up in a few moments.

Winner Takes Third Place

As the calendar turns into Year 9, the box office remains dominated by two holdovers from the Christmas season. The sole entry into the box office from Year 9 is Winner Takes All, the third and presumably final entry in the Finders Keepers Trilogy (but who knows if math is this studio’s strong suit), and it debuts with a shade under $12.5 million. Critical reception is exactly what you’d expect, and while audiences appear to have taken a shine to the film, experts expect this to have less than stellar legs.

1. Sins of Their Fathers: $26,328,651

2. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $17,645,934

3. Winner Takes All: $12,418,335 (1st week)

4. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Boy in the Iceberg: $6,533,441

5. Dreams: $4,150,111

6. Everything We Miss: $3.994,983

7. Christmas Shopping: $3,201,057

8. Wii Fit: $3,040,400

9. The Bronx is Burning: $2,636,040

10. Loving Shadow and Light: $1,400,344

Sins of Year 8 Continue to Dominate as a Select Few Dine on Socks

January is a traditional dumping ground for awful movies, and never has that been more clear than Year 9, when the second weekend of the month has a single new film: Socksucker, which has gone over about as well as you would think with critics and audiences. The audiences who went thinking the film would be some meta or ironic product were sorely disappointed. Meanwhile, Winner Takes All drops a good amount, but the solid audience reception prevents a harsh downturn.

1. Sins of Their Fathers: $15,533,904 (-41%)

2. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $9,422,929 (-46.6%)

3. Socksucker: $6,401,177 (1st week)

4. Winner Takes All: $5,464,067 (-56%) (2nd week)

5. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Boy in the Iceberg: $3,384,322 (-48.2%)

6. Everything We Miss: $2,696,276 (-32.5%)

7. Dreams: $2,290,861 (-44.8%)

8. Wii Fit: $1,523,240 (-49.9%)

9. The Bronx is Burning: $1,367,119 (-48.2%)

10. Christmas Shopping: $1,298,412 (-61%)

Box Office Up for Monkey Business as Studios Finally Decide to Intercept Audiences

It took three weeks but we finally have a film from this year atop the weekly box office. Family adventure Super Monkey Ball catches the top spot with a health $43 million holiday opening, and while critics aren’t taking it out to the ballgame, the target family audience appears to be responding well to it. Meanwhile, the Nicolas Cage actioner has drawn a decent number of eyeballs, but well below studio hopes for the domestic market. With North American audiences not that enamored, the studio will need to bank on international markets to put the film in the black.

In other news, holiday traffic prevents Socksucker from having a truly calamitous fall in its second weekend.

1. Super Monkey Ball: $35,226,714/$43,410,371 (1st week)

2. Interceptors: $26,274,911/$33,074,371 (1st week)

3. Sins of Our Fathers : $10,733,928 (-30.9%)/$12,880,714

4. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $6,313,362 (-33%)/$7,876,909

5. Winner Takes All: $3,114,518 (-43%)/$4,033,217 (3rd week)

6. Everything We Miss: $3,033,311 (+12.5%)/$3,914,044

7. Socksucker: $2,240,411 (-65%)/$2,581,486 (2nd week)

8. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Boy in the Iceberg: $2,118,586/$2,372,818 (-37.4%)

9. Dreams: $1,569,240 (-31.5%)

10. The Bronx is Burning Bronx: $1,240,850 (-10%)

Audiences Prefer Other Forms of Transit as Go-Kart Gottlieb Debuts in Fourth

Super Monkey Ball repeats at #1 with a solid drop off the holiday weekend, and stronger legs projected for the weekends to come. Interceptors meanwhile has a hefty drop off, though it stays on the right side of 60. The off-kilter German go-kart drama appears in fourth place, with mixed reviews counterbalanced by early hype of a bonkers third act, which has attracted enough people to give it a cursory glance. Audience reception, like critics, is mixed. Winner Takes All continues to hang around with an average tail end to its run, while Socksucker leaves the Top 10 entirely, with rumors of a third weekend drop near 80%.

1. Super Monkey Ball: $20,783,761 (-41%) (2nd week)

2. Interceptors: $11,035,462 (-58%) (2nd week)

3. Sins of Our Fathers: $6,375,953 (-40.6%)

4. Go-Kart Gottlieb: $5,138,627 (1st week)

5. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $3,642,810 (-42.3%)

6. Everything We Miss: $1,850,320 (-39%)

7. Winner Takes All: $1,619,549 (-48%) (4th week)

8. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Boy in the Iceberg: $1,213,950 (-42.7%)

9. Dreams: $1,167,515 (-25.6%)

10. The Bronx is Burning: $949,287 (-23.9%)

Video Game Adaptation Steals the Box Office While Other Audiences Take a Trip to the Shore

Though its reviews have not been overly kind, fans of the massively-selling GTA franchise have appeared in theaters in sufficient numbers to give the adaptation the #1 spot, more than double the gross of Super Monkey Ball, which appears to start settling in for a nice leggy tail end of the run. The overall numbers for GTA however are well below its' studios internal projects and other experts' predictions. Teen rom-com By the Seaside doesn’t do amazing numbers for its open, but audience reception is a win for it, and should attract a fair amount of repeat business from its target demo.

1. Grand Theft Auto: $31,940,156 (1st week)

2. Super Monkey Ball: $14,132,957 (-32%) (3rd week)

3. By The Seaside: $11,508,722 (1st week)

4. Interceptors: $5,297,021 (-52%) (3rd week)

5. Sins of Our Fathers: $4,271,889 (-33%)

6. Go Kart Gottlieb: $2,826,244 (-45%) (2nd week)

7. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $2,560,896 (-29.7%)

8. Everything We Miss: $1,295,224 (-30%)

9. Winner Takes All: $923,142 (-43%) (5th week)

10. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Boy in the Iceberg: $801,207 (-34%)

Monkey Ball should do nicely throughout March especially with Alakazam acting as a potential for double features. 150m seems likely.

Here is February. Nothing else will be posted today. Will be fairly busy during the week but will try to get at least a couple more months done before next weekend starts.

Somewhat Crummy Weekend at the Box Office as Well-Received Musical Can’t Hide the Bottom Falling Out of the Top 10

As Grand Theft Auto fell somewhat notably in its second weekend, it was still enough to retain the top spot, as musical opener The Crummy Shindig mustered enough song and dance to break double-digit millions, but not enough to take the spotlight. Audience reactions are pretty strong, so expect a leggy run. By the Seaside takes a second week of vacation for a solid fall, and studios everywhere are starting to realize they may have created a monster by not placing any counterprogramming to Super Monkey Ball until March. As for the rest of the top 10, the bottom segment is not pretty, helped by the lack of quantity to the openers so far.

1. Grand Theft Auto: $14,692,471 (-54%) (2nd week)

2. The Crummy Shindig: $11,619,333 (1st week)

3. Super Monkey Ball: $10,175,729 (-28%) (4th week)

4. By the Seaside: $6,905,233 (-40%) (2nd week)

5. Interceptors: $2,913,361 (-45%) (4th week)

6. Sins of Their Fathers: $2,328,180 (-45.5%)

7. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $1,452,028 (-43.3%)

8. Go-Kart Gottlieb: $1,441,384 (-49%) (3rd week)

9. Everything We Miss: $1,005,636 (-22.4%)

10. The Bronx is Burning: $713,130 (-0.5%)

Friday, February 14th (4-Day President’s Day Weekend)

Landslide Brings it Down for Productive if Not Stellar President’s Day Weekend

President’s Day Weekend traditionally brings the first big blockbuster of the year. Landslide….is not that, but it does decent enough for its opening frame. Time will tell if its 12 weeks of IMAX bookings will counteract the mixed at best critical reviews and audience reactions. If it does not, then the IMAX company is gonna take a huge loss for not looking at the minimum recommitting to Alakazam in March. Whinge & Cringe provoked a lot of cringe from audiences, but not enough to defray those unsuspecting viewers looped in for a first viewing.

Meanwhile, Super Monkey Ball grosses more in the 4-day frame than it did this past week, as its march of unopposed family hostage taking continues.

1. Landslide: $35,163,287/$42,719,082 (1st week)

2. Whinge & Cringe: $12,226,352/$15,648,275 (1st week)

3. Grand Theft Auto: $9,109,332 (-38%)/$11,538,014 (3rd week)

4. Super Monkey Ball: $8,242,340 (-19%)/$10,188,531 (5th week)

5. The Crummy Shindig: $7,668,759 (-34%)/$9,417,325 (2nd week)

6. By the Seaside: $4,833,663 (-30%)/$6,012,084 (3rd week)

7. Interceptors: 2,039,352 (-30%)/$2,697,144 (5th week)

8. Sins of Their Fathers: $1,552,896 (-33.3%)/$2,056,717

9. Everything We Miss: $1,301,700 (+23.8%)/$1,645,981

10. The Un-title-able Squirrel Girl Sequel: $871,217 (-40%)/$984,475

Landslide Blocks Road to Top Spot as Justice is Weighed Down

Landslide drops more than half its gross from the inflated 3-day opening weekend, but it is still enough to take #1. Opener Scales of Justice doesn’t deliver a lot of flash, but it’s gotten solid reviews and provides the kind of catnip for older audiences that a lot of the offerings this year so far have not provided, Crummy Shindig aside, so expect this one to hang around for a while. Whinge & Cringe drops almost sixty percent in its second weekend, while Crummy Shindig and By the Seaside are not punished for the inflated holiday weekend.

1. Landslide: $16,526,744 (-53%) (2nd week)

2. Scales of Justice: $12,195,372 (1st week)

3. Super Monkey Ball: $6,099,331 (-26%) (6th week)

4. Grand Theft Auto: $5,101,225 (-44%) (4th week)

5. Whinge & Cringe: $5,012,804 (-59%) (2nd week)

6. The Crummy Shindig: $4,601,255 (-40%) (3rd week)

7. By the Seaside: $3,076,707 (-37%) (4th week)

8. Sins of Their Fathers: $991,039

9. Interceptors: $978,888 (-52%) (6th week)

10. Everything We Miss: $882,553 (-22.2%)

Landslide Continues to Bury Competition in Weakest Box Office Frame of the Year So Far

No more has the lack of quantity of offerings at the box office been felt than this weekend, when the #1 film of the weekend barely cracks $10 million, and the bottom of the Top 10 is weaker than a mouse at an arm wrestling competition. The lack of counterprogramming results in pretty soft drops for almost everything this weekend. The sole opener, Death is Not My Friend, has found some companionship at the box office, and its soft opening will be mitigated a bit by decent audience reception.

1. Landslide: $10,081,313 (-39%) (3rd week)

2. Scales of Justice: $7,926,991 (-35%) (2nd week)

3. Death Is Not My Friend: $6,833,868 (1st week)

4. Super Monkey Ball: $4,269,531 (-30%) (7th week)

5. Grand Theft Auto: $3,417,820 (-33%) (5th week)

6. The Crummy Shindig: $3,312,903 (-28%) (4th week)

7. Whinge & Cringe: $2,356,017 (-53%) (3rd week)

8. By the Seaside: $2,215,229 (-28%) (5th week)

9. Everything We Miss: $598,948

10. Sins of Their Fathers: $584,664

Landslide Deep Sixed at Last

Landslide’s IMAX-fueled reign at the top has finally ended, thanks to the middling action flick Deep Sixed, which nabs a little under $13 million for the weekend. Landslide slides all the way to fourth place, thanks to a debut from the Bugcatcher Boys with bug-sized box office, and a strong hold from Scales of Justice, which is setting up for a leggy run thanks to overall solid reception and a dearth of adult-oriented dramas. Death is Not My Friend has a solid second weekend drop.

1. Deep Sixed: $12,637,195 (1st week)

2. Bugcatcher Boys: $5,914,077 (1st week)

3. Scales of Justice: $5,390,353 (-32%) (3rd week)

4. Landslide: $4,939,843 (-51%) (4th week)

Last of the Victims, First at the Box Office

Horror flick The Last Victim debuts at #1 this weekend, coming within sight of the $20 million barrier, which hasn’t been reached since President’s Day Weekend. Deep Sixed takes a tumble, as does Landslide, perhaps finally reaching the point where even IMAX cannot drive repeat viewings. Adult-oriented dramas and the ever-present Monkey Ball all had strong holds.

1. The Last Victim: $18,472,913 (1st week)

2. Deep Sixed: $5,686,737 (-55%) (2nd week)

3. Scales of Justice: $3,827,150 (-29%) (4th week)

Oh Oh It's Magic, You Know. Never Believe It’s Not So

We have our first large opener of the year with the magical adventure Alakazam!, which scrapes across the $50 million barrier for its opening week. But while the top of the box office does great this weekend, the continued dearth of content continues to show itself more and, as while many films hold well due to the lack of competition, that lack of competition in general means less and less money coming into theaters. Some analysts blame Zlaspek, the movie industry mogul who junked his entire slate of movies and sent half to streaming and the other half to tax write-off hell.

1. Alakazam!: $50,185,933 (1st week)

2. The Last Victim: $7,758,623 (-58%) (2nd week)

3. Deep Sixed: $3,127,705 (-45%) (3rd week)

4. Scales of Justice: $2,908,634 (-24%) (5th week)

5. Bugcatcher Boys: $2,157,536 (-36%) (3rd week)

6. Death is Not My Friend: $1,831,202 (-30%) (4th week)

7. Landslide: $1,386,119 (-39%) (6th week)

8. Super Monkey Ball: $1,287,690 (-42%) (10th week)

9. The Crummy Shindig: 1,250,288 (-32%) (7th week)

10. By the Seaside: $586,946 (-40%) (7th week)

Audiences Continue to Believe in Magic as Adult Dramas Spy a Chance for More Money

Alakazam! remains at the top of the box office with a good second weekend drop, as families as desperate to escape the clutches of monkeys and balls; it should have a strong run through the rest of the month as there’s only a couple smaller scale family offerings on the schedule. Meanwhile, American Spy takes over as the adult film du jour, with solid reviews overall, and very strong notices for its lead actress, driving it with audiences. On the other hand, the top 10 features three films under $1 million. Where is the content?

1. Alakazam!: $28,605,981 (-43%) (2nd week)

2. American Spy: $15,274,528 (1st week)

3. The Last Victim: $4,344,828 (-44%) (3rd week)

4. Scales of Justice: $1,803,353 (-38%) (6th week)

5. Deep Sixed: $1,501,298 (-52%) (4th week)

6. Bugcatcher Boys: $1,294,521 (-40%) (4th week)

7. Death is Not My Friend: $1,025,473 (-44%) (5th week)

Audiences Continued to Be Bewitched By Alakazam’s Charms As Bottom of Box Office Grows More Dire

Alakazam! retains its hold on the top spot of the box office with a strong hold, with new entrant Molly and Emmett eking out a result above American Spy’s own strong hold. The family offering has a weak opening, but has good enough reception to leg things out a bit in a barren April. The other opener, Bikini, had weak reviews and an even weaker opening weekend. The number of Top 10 films under a million increases to four, as audiences are starved for something, anything. Will next week bring it?

1. Alakazam!: $ 18,021,768 (-37%) (3rd week)

2. Molly and Emmett: $9,725,083 (1st week)

3. American Spy: $9,470,207 (-38%) (2nd week)

4. Bikini: $4,561,892 (1st week)

5. The Last Victim: $2,302,758 (-47%) (4th week)

6. Scales of Justice: $1,316,447 (-27%) (7th week)

Studios Just Do Not Give a Darn About April It Seems

Next week definitely did not bring it, as the only new film to open this weekend was the little-viewed documentary Heart of the Amazon. In the wake of almost nothing at all opening, most films had better than usual holds, which meant Alakazam got to reign supreme for a fourth week in a row. But yeah, now we have multiple films under $500,000 in the Top 10.

1. Alakazam!: $12,615,237 (-30%) (4th week)

2. American Spy: $6,818,549 (-28%) (3rd week)

3. Molly and Emmett: $6,126,802 (-37%) (2nd week)

4. Heart of the Amazon: $4,115,774 (1st week)

5. Bikini: $2,600,278 (-43%) (2nd week)

6. The Last Victim: $1,381,654 (-40%) (5th week)

7. Scales of Justice: $1,053,157 (-20%) (8th week)

It’s only two new films, but both opened to 8 figures, and honestly this box office needs any shred of life it can get. Devil Bean opened to somewhat mixed reviews, and while audience reception is a bit divisive, it does have a strong and vocal contingent of support. It’ll need that in a couple weeks. Other opener, The Boy Who hated Books, does decent business and should do well enough as counterprogramming for the next few weeks. Summer season is getting closer and maybe we’ll find a bunch of studio offerings then.

1. Devil Bean: $39,375,097 (1st week)

2. The Boy Who Hated Books: $10,140,538 (1st week)

3. Alakazam!: $7,064,532 (-44%) (5th week)

4. American Spy: $4,363,871 (-36%) (4th week)

5. Molly and Emmett: $3,369,741 (-45%) (3rd week)

6. Heart of the Amazon: $2,304,833 (-44%) (2nd week)

7. Bikini: $1,430,152 (-45%) (3rd week)

8. The Last Victim: $718,460 (-48%) (6th week)

9. Scales of Justice: $652,957 (-38%) (9th week)

10. Deep Sixed: $254,667 (-52%) (7th week)

The Devil is in the Details as it Casts a Shadow Over All Else

Devil Bean, true to its kinda divisive reception, falls just under 50% this weekend, with Martian Manhunter looming in a week. How much it falls there will determine the rest of its legs most likely. The sole opener of the weekend, Shadow of the Comet, does decent business, but its mixed reception sets it up for a potential crash next week. Much of the rest of the Top 10 falls well, but with the May onslaught coming, this might be the last chance for many of them to make some real cash.

1. Devil Bean: $21,262,552 (-46%) (2nd week)

2. Shadow of the Comet: $11,741,743 (1st week)

3. The Boy Who Hated Books: $6,185,728 (-39%) (2nd week)

4. Alakazam!: $4,521,300 (-36%) (6th week)

5. American Spy: $3,054,709 (-30%) (5th week)

6. Molly and Emmett: $2,224,029 (-34%) (4th week)

7. Heart of the Amazon: $1,498,141 (-35%) (3rd week)

8. Bikini: $829,488 (-42%) (4th week)

9. Scales of Justice: $470,129 (-28%) (10th week)

10. The Last Victim: $431,076 (7th week)

That's all for tonight. More months will be posted this weekend.

I’m surprised Monkey Ball is lower. Was thinking it have had gotten to 150m with it holds unless weekdays were mediocre.

The estimate assumes weak weekdays. Stronger weekdays could inch it to 145m

Ok. We got five months of actuals to post today, so let's get to it, one by one.

Friday, May 2nd

Box Office Heads to Outer Space as May Arrives with the First Summer Blockbuster

We have finally entered the summer season and the first truly healthy month of the box office as all but one weekend promises to bring an opener with some solid numbers. Martian Manhunter takes the wheel with a debut a little shy of 70 million. If it can survive the gauntlet of films through Memorial Day, it should make a nice total. Devil Bean expectedly drops hard against the direct competition, while the kid and adult skewing films did alright.

1. Martian Manhunter: $68,792,044 (1st week)

2. Devil Bean: $9,142,897 (-57%) (3rd week)

3. Shadow of the Comet: $6,575,376 (-44%) (2nd week)

4. The Boy Who Hated Books: $4,020,723 (-35%) (3rd week)

5. Alakazam: $2,215,437 (-51%) (7th week)

6. American Spy: $1,924,466 (-37%) (6th week)

7. Molly and Emmett: $1,334,417 (-40%) (5th week)

8. Heart of the Amazon: $913,866 (-39%) (4th week)

9. Bikini: $514,282 (-38%) (5th week)

10. Scales of Justice: $314,986 (-33%) (11th week)

Friday, May 9th (Mother’s Day Weekend)

Kirby Tastes the Sweet Nectar of Money as It Clobbers the Competition

As soon as Martian Manhunter sat upon the throne, Kirby has arrived to inhale it and spit the superhero out. With an impressive opening over $75 million, Kirby is poised to make a pretty nice run for the next month due to no direct family competition, though there may be a tad of a rush factor considering the Nintendo franchise. Devil Bean stabilizes while family-skewing films get hit hard. Don’t look at how low the top 10 goes, since while May brings money at the top, there’s not a lot beyond that.

1. Kirby and the King's Caper: $75,913,832 (1st week)

2. Martian Manhunter: $32,332,260 (-53%) (2nd week)

3. Devil Bean: $5,302,880 (-42%) (4th week)

4. Shadow of the Comet: $4,010,979 (-39%) (3rd week)

5. The Boy Who Hated Books: $2,090,775 (-48%) (4th week)

6. American Spy: $1,308,636 (-32%) (7th week)

7. Alakazam: $1,041,255 (-53%) (8th week)

8. Molly and Emmett: $600,487 (-55%) (6th week)

9. Heart of the Amazon: $594,012 (-35%) (5th week)

10. Bikini: $339,426 (-34%) (6th week)

Friday, May 16th

Man of the Jungle Swings to Top of Weekend List While The Future Turns Out to Not Quite Be Now

The latest spin on Tarzan has a decent opening all things considered, edging out Kirby for the top spot for the weekend. Reviews and audience reception are mixed, so it might struggle to leg it out. Manhunter is being hit fairly hard by the gauntlet, but analysts think it will pick up some late legs after Memorial Day. Documentary AeroMobil has a soft opening, but still enough to take fourth place given how little there has been in the middle for audiences.

1. The Man of the Jungle: $45,855,017 (1st week)

2. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $41,752,607 (-45%) (2nd week)

3. Martian Manhunter: $16,166,130 (-50%) (3rd week)

4. AeroMobil: The Future Is Now: $3,318,946 (1st week)

5. Devil Bean: $2,545,382 (-52%) (5th week)

6. Shadow of the Comet: $2,165,928 (-46%) (4th week)

7. The Boy Who Hated Books: $1,233,557 (-41%) (5th week)

8. American Spy: $824,440 (-37%) (8th week)

9. Alakazam!: $572,690 (-45%) (9th week)

10. Molly and Emmett: $360,292 (-40%) (7th week)

Friday, May 23rd (4-Day Memorial Day Weekend)

Rocket Hero Rockets to Top of Holiday Frame as Audiences Bond over Their Revenge Exes

Memorial Day arrives with some mixed results for the holdovers. Man of the Jungle falls fairly hard despite the holiday due to its reception, while most of the other holdovers do pretty well. Kirby is now poised to rack up a lot of money over the next two weeks before the next major animated film hits. Rocket Hero does strong Tom Cruise numbers and while reception is not the greatest, being the last notable live action blockbuster of the month should give it some juice for a few weeks. Meanwhile, Revenge Ex has a solid opening, but the real story is audience scores are through the roof for it, and a very leggy summer run is expected after the initial post-holiday drop-off.

1. Rocket Hero: $50,185,004/$59,560,555 (1st week)

2. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $29,226,824 (-30%)/$36,641,085 (3rd week)

3. Revenge Ex: $23,601,892/$28,417,422 (1st week)

4. Man of the Jungle: $21,093,307 (-54%)/$26,418,004 (2nd week)

5. Martian Manhunter: $8,891,371 (-45%)/$11,502,188 (4th week)

6. AeroMobil: The Future is Now: $2,024,557/$2,401,177 (-39%) (2nd week)

7. Devil Bean: $1,476,321 (-42%)/$1,705,911 (6th week)

8. Shadow of the Comet: $1,364,534 (-37%)/$1,582,199 (5th week)

9. The Boy Who Hated Books: $838,818 (-32%)/$1,002,155 (6th week)

10. American Spy: $593,596 (-28%)/$705,733 (10th week)

Fatal Error Commits Fatal Error in Being Released at All

And we reach the one weekend of May that is purely abominable, with the only opener being the terribly reviewed horror Fatal Error, which barely scraps over 5 million for the weekend. Rocket Hero drops hard post-holiday, but is expected to recover over the rest of June. Man of the Jungle and Martian Manhunter hold decently, and Kirby makes one last swallow of the box office before it has to face Matilda and her night children.

1. Rocket Hero: $22,081,401 (-56%) (2nd week)

2. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $19,874,240 (-32%) (4th week)

3. Revenge Ex: $13,925,116 (-41%) (2nd week)

4. Man of the Jungle: $12,234,118 (-42%) (3rd week)

5. Martian Manhunter: $5,334,822 (-40%) (5th week)

6. Fatal Error: $5,287,264 (1st week)

7. AeroMobil: The Future is Now: $1,255,225 (-38%) (3rd week)

8. Devil Bean: $826,739 (-44%) (7th week)

9. Shadow of the Comet: $777,784 (-43%) (6th week)

10. The Boy Who Hated Books: $503,290 (-40%) (7th week)

Matilda Brings the Night to Smother Its Direct Competition for at Least One Weekend

Matilda and the Night Children opens to a strong $60 million and is posed to wring out some good numbers for the rest of June. Kirby as expected falls hard this weekend, but is expected to recover for the remaining weekends until the Fourth. Fatal Error loses two-thirds of its audience, and Revenge Ex’s summer legs begin to kick in.

1. Matilda and the Night Children: $60,814,905 (1st week)

2. Rocket Hero: $13,028,026 (-41%) (3rd week)

5. Man of the Jungle: $7,340,470 (-40%) (4th week)

6. Martian Manhunter: $3,360,937 (-37%) (6th week)

7. Fatal Error: $1,744,797 (-67%) (2nd week)

8. AeroMobil: The Future is Now: $853,553 (-32%) (4th week)

9. Shadow of the Comet: $544,448 (-30%) (7th week)

10. Devil Bean: $537,380 (-35%) (8th week)

Friday, June 13th (Father’s Day Weekend)

The Monado is Not as Powerful as Hoped, as Matilda Barely Misses a Second Weekend of Reign

Fantasy franchise aspirant Xenoblade Chronicles opens to $37.5 million and negative-leaning reviews, and mixed audience reaction. The exposition heavy blockbuster hopeful is expected to have weaker legs. Matilda misses retaining #1 by only a couple million, but is expected to regain the throne next weekend.

1. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $37,589,306 (1st week)

2. Matilda and the Night Children: $35,272,644 (-42%) (2nd week)

3. Revenge Ex: $6,920,782 (-30%) (4th week)

4. Rocket Hero: $6,383,732 (-51%) (4th week)

5. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $5,544,912 (-38%) (6th week)

6. Man of the Jungle: $3,450,020 (-53%) (5th week)

7. Martian Manhunter: $1,781,296 (-47%) (7th week)

8. Fatal Error: $785,158 (-55%) (3rd week)

9. AeroMobil: The Future is Now: $597,487 (-30%) (5th week)

10. Shadow of the Comet: $321,224 (-41%) (8th week)

Friday, June 20th

It’s a Good Day for Matilda as It Regains Number One, While Box Office Hits a June Lull

As expected, Matilda regains the top spot, dropping far better than Xenoblade Chronicles, which is poised to drop fairly hard again next week against direct competition. Drama opener The Next Good Day opens fairly softly, but overall reception is positive so it should find its niche. Kirby’s legs have reasserted themselves to once again inhale as much money as possible before the looming competition in two weeks.

1. Matilda and the Night Children: $22,927,218 (-35%) (3rd week)

2. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $16,539,294 (-56%) (2nd week)

3. The Next Good Day: $8,105,944 (1st week)

4. Revenge Ex: $5,190,586 (-25%) (5th week)

5. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $3,992,336 (-28%) (7th week)

6. Rocket Hero: $3,894,076 (-39%) (5th week)

7. Man of the Jungle: $2,070,012 (-40%) (6th week)

8. Martian Manhunter: $1,157,842 (-35%) (8th week)

9. Aero Mobil: The Future is Now: $466,039 (-22%) (6th week)

10. Fatal Error: $400,430 (-49%)

Friday, June 27th

Not a Last Hope at All as Second Dimension Opens Well in the Final June Frame

Our second fantasy franchise hopeful of the month opens much better than Xenoblade Chronicles, and to better reception, so expect Second Dimension: Last Hope to have more of a lasting impact at the box office. Xenoblade Chronicles falls hard again, while Revenge Ex continues to leg it out and Matilda and Kirby brace themselves for the weekend this is about to come.

1. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $55,441,066 (1st week)

2. Matilda and the Night Children: $14,673,419 (-36%) (4th week)

3. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $7,442,682 (-55%) (3rd week)

4. The Next Good Day: $4,863,566 (-40%) (2nd week)

5. Revenge Ex: $3,321,975 (-36%) (6th week)

6. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $2,674,791 (-33%) (8th week)

7. Rocket Hero: $1,869,156 (-52%) (6th week)
