4815162342
Wednesday, July 2nd (5-Day Independence Day Weekend) It’s the Year of Animated Blockbusters as Heremias Overwhelms the Five-Day Holiday Weekend, and Some Audiences Learn to Say No to Drugs The sequel to Sylvarius debuts with a very healthy $120 million over the five-day holiday frame, a bit over studio expectations, and in line with a couple analysts predictions. Both Matilda and Kirby fall over 50% but Matilda still catches some holiday spillover. The other holdovers mostly drop well, though not quite as well as other years, with lots of family get-togethers on the Fourth proper. The big exception is Revenge Ex, which scooped up a lot of people preferring making out in theaters as opposed to cooking with family. 1. Heremias: $80,315,844/$120,632,541 (1st week) 2. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $27,166,122 (-51%)/$39,588,025 (2nd week) 3. Matilda and the Night Children: $6,456,304 (-56%)/$9,218,853 (5th week) 4. War on Drugs: America's Modern Conflict: $5,416,284/$7,933,953 (1st week) 5. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $4,316,755 (-42%)/$6,357,955 (4th week) 6. The Next Good Day: $3,453,131 (-29%)/$5,004,645 (3rd week) 7. Revenge Ex: $2,690,799 (-19%)/$4,085,772 (7th week) 8. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $1,230,403 (-54%)/$1,921,063 (9th week) 9. Rocket Hero: $1,214,951 (-35%)/$1,845,142 (7th week) 10. Man of the Jungle: $691,176 (-37%)/$1,062,792 (8th week) Friday, July 11th Heremias Stays on Top as Competition in July Proves to Be a Mirage Having burned off a lot of demand its opening Wednesday and Thursday, Heremias strikes a balancing act with drop that probably would have been a good deal heavier if it was a normal 3-day weekend. But the rest of summer appears to be pretty wide open for a popular animated film to leg it out, as we start to enter the half of summer where studios forgot to schedule any notable blockbuster at all. Offbeat and stylistic western The Mirage opens strong to good reception. 1. Heremias: $45,780,031 (-43%) (2nd week) 2. The Mirage: $23,619,055 (1st week) 3. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $14,941,367 (-45%) (3rd week) 4. Matilda and the Night Children: $4,002,908 (-38%) (6th week) 5. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $3,303,933 (-39%) (2nd week) 6. The Next Good Day: $2,175,472 (-37%) (4th week) 7. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $2,028,874 (-53%) (5th week) 8. Revenge Ex: $1,722,111 (-36%) (8th week) 9. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $812,065 (-34%) (10th week) 10. Rocket Hero: $692,522 (-43%) (8th week) Friday, July 18th It’s a Three-Pointer for Heremias as Audiences Can’t Quite the Allure of Basketball With no notable live action films releasing for almost another month, Heremias easily hangs onto the top spot of the weekend listings, almost double the amount of this universe’s favorite basketball franchise. HOOOOPs sinks $15 million of cash, while the rest of the holdovers, due to a lack of stuff coming out, all hold pretty well. 1. Heremias: $28,383,619 (-38%) (3rd week) 2. HOOOOOPs: $15,288,193 (1st week) 3. The Mirage: $13,226,670 (-44%) (2nd week) 4. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $8,665,992 (-42%) (4th week) 5. Matilda and the Night Children: $2,802,035 (-30%) (7th week) 6. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $2,147,556 (-35%) (3rd week) 7. The Next Good Day: $1,566,339 (-28%) (5th week) 8. Revenge Ex: $1,343,246 (-22%) (9th week) 9. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $1,136,169 (-44%) (6th week) 10. Kirby and the King’s Caper: $592,807 (-27%) (11th week) Friday, July 25th Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before, But Heremias is on Top This week, the only new opener is a sequel to Hearts of Fire, and the weak reviews and lackluster audience interest puts it under $15 million with weak legs to come. Heremias meanwhile is starting to fully stretch its wings and reigns supreme for the entire month of July. It is a shame that a number of studios had production difficulties and could not get their films finished in time for this year, because this month has been so inviting yet so empty. 1. Heremias: $20,152,369 (-29%) (4th week) 2. Hearts of Fire: Vengeful Heart: $14,703,849 (1st week) 3. HOOOOOPs: $8,408,506 (-45%) (2nd week) 4. The Mirage: $7,936,002 (-40%) (3rd week) 5. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $5,372,915 (-38%) (5th week) 6. Matilda and the Night Children: $2,129,546 (-24%) (8th week) 7. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $1,524,764 (-29%) (4th week) 8. The Next Good Day: $1,174,754 (-25%) (6th week) 9. Revenge Ex: $1,101,461 (-18%) (10th week) 10. Xenoblade Chronicles: Power of the Monado: $658,978 (-42%) (7th week)

4815162342
Friday, August 1st A New Month Brings a New Top Film at the Box Office As Analysts Try to Figure Out What a Dinosaucer Even Is Dinosaucers brings with it a carnivorous appetite to the box office as it scoops up a bit over $25 million, finally providing audiences with a family-geared offering that isn’t Heremias. Heremias’ though blunted this week, is expected to continue to rack up money the rest of August since the rest of the month is pretty devoid of competition. 1. Dinosaucers: $25,297,108 (1st week) 2. Heremias: $12,091,421 (-40%) (5th week) 3. Hearts of Fire: Vengeful Heart: $6,763,770 (-54%) (2nd week) 4. The Mirage: $5,237,761 (-34%) (4th week) 5. HOOOOOPs: $4,792,848 (-43%) (3rd week) 6. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $3,492,394 (-35%) (6th week) 7. Matilda and the Night Children: $1,171,250 (-45%) (9th week) 8. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $1,036,839 (-32%) (5th week) 9. Revenge Ex: $837,110 (-24%) (11th week) 10. The Next Good Day: $822,327 (-30%) (7th week) Friday, August 8th Gran Turismo Revs Up Things a Little We have our first truly notable live action offering at the box office since the end of June, with Gran Turismo opening to $34 million. Not the best received movie, it figures to do okay the rest of the month. Heremias resumes its summer legs, and The Mirage is proving to have acquired some notable late legs as well. Hearts of Fire on the other hand continues to drop pretty hard. 1. Gran Turismo: $34,108,772 (1st week) 2. Dinosaucers: $13,660,438 (-46%) (2nd week) 3. Heremias: $8,101,252 (-33%) (6th week) 4. The Mirage: $3,561,677 (-32%) (5th week) 5. Hearts of Fire: Vengeful Heart: $2,976,058 (-56%) (3rd week) 6. HOOOOOPs: $2,827,780 (-41%) (4th week) 7. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $1,816,044 (-48%) (7th week) 8. Matilda and the Night Children: $749,600 (-36%) (10th week) 9. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $653,208 (-37%) (6th week) 10. Revenge Ex: $585,977 (-30%) (12th week) Friday, August 15th Gran Turismo Repeats as #1 By the Grace of No One Scheduling Anything With the only wide opener being mediocrely received Christian drama Someone’s Grace, Gran Turismo retains the top spot of the weekend with ease. Other films take advantage of the lack of openers to hold pretty well, even the dumpster fire Hearts of Fire Vengeful Heart. We’re entering the doldrums of August now. 1. Gran Turismo: $18,077,649 (-47%) (2nd week) 2. Dinosaucers: $7,786,449 (-43%) (3rd week) 3. Someone's Grace: $6,173,284 (1st week) 4. Heremias: $5,670,876 (-30%) (7th week) 5. The Mirage: $2,208,239 (-38%) (6th week) 6. HOOOOOPs: $1,781,501 (-37%) (5th week) 7. Hearts of Fire: Vengeful Heart: $1,666,592 (-44%) (4th week) 8. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $1,035,145 (-43%) (8th week) 9. Matilda and the Night Children: $584,688 (-22%) (11th week) 10. War on Drugs: America’s Modern Conflict: $457,245 (-30%) (7th week) The Excursion: $72,844 (1st week) (limited OW) Friday, August 22nd Talons Grabs Hold of the Box Office As Box Office Hits its Weakest Point in Months We have one of the weakest weekends of the year with only two films at 8 figures, one of them the opener Talons of the Hawk, which has proven to be pretty divisive with audiences. To be honest, there really isn’t much to talk about this weekend, since we have hit a stretch where the lack of content being offered to audiences on a weekly basis means the top 10 just gets lower and lower. 1. The Talons of the Hawk: $12,518,066 (1st week) 2. Gran Turismo: $10,123,483 (-44%) (3rd week) 3. Dinosaucers: $4,204,682 (-46%) (4th week) 4. Heremias: $3,686,069 (-35%) (8th week) 5. Someone’s Grace: $3,457,039 (-44%) (2nd week) 6. The Mirage: $1,280,778 (-42%) (7th week) 7. HOOOOOPs: $1,068,900 (-40%) (6th week) 8. Hearts of Fire: Vengeful Heart: $816,630 (-51%) (5th week) 9. Second Dimension: Last Hope: $579,681 (-44%) (9th week) 10. Matilda and the Night Children: $467,750 (-20%) (12th week) The Excursion: $208,116 (2nd week) (limited expansion) Friday, August 29th (4-Day Labor Day Weekend) Scythe Carves its Swath at the Box Office as Audiences are Uncertain if The First Water War is a Threat or a Promise The Top 10 situation gets salvaged a bit this weekend with two new openers and a limited offering going wide. Scythe grabs $35 million over the holiday frame, with kid-oriented First Water War doing a shade over $10 million. This Labor Day weekend struck a balance between various examples in the past, with most holdovers doing pretty well, but nothing increasing like in years where nothing opens at all. The Excursion does okay in its muted wide opening. 1. Scythe: $29,643,717/$35,016,026 (1st week) 2. The First Water War: $8,521,644/$10,331,906 (1st week) 3. Gran Turismo: $6,276,559 (-38%)/$7,806,147 (4th week) 4. Talons of the Hawk: $6,259,033 (-50%)/$7,741,055 (2nd week) 5. Dinosaucers: $2,859,183 (-32%)/$3,691,047 (5th week) 6. Heremias: $2,838,273 (-23%)/$3,618,732 (9th week) 7. Someone’s Grace: $2,419,927 (-30%)/$3,185,048 (3rd week) 8. The Excursion: $1,913,827/$2,346,711 (3rd week) (wide expansion) 9. The Mirage: $1,037,430 (-19%)/$1,319,361 (8th week) 10. HOOOOOPs: $908,565 (-15%)/$1,186,581 (7th week)
4815162342
Friday, September 5th Scythe Stays on Top as Audiences Don’t React in Horror to Acne Scythe, though dropping a bit hard in the post-holiday frame, manages to stay on top of the box office. It’s closest competition is the body-horror Acne, which while not cracking eight figures has gotten strong audience reactions and is poised to become a bit of a leggy runner. The other opener, documentary Seals of Honor, hits around 4.5 million for the weekend. 1. Scythe: $13,636,109 (-54%) (2nd week) 2. Acne: $9,104,388 (1st week) 3. The First Water War: $4,686,904 (-45%) (2nd week) 4. Seals of Honor: $4,491,044 (1st week) 5. Gran Turismo: $3,389,341 (-46%) (5th week) 6. Talons of the Hawk: $2,941,745 (-53%) (3rd week) 7. Heremias: $1,759,729 (-38%) (10th week) 8. Dinosaucers: $1,715,509 (-40%) (6th week) 9. Someone’s Grace: $1,258,362 (-48%) (4th week) 10. The Excursion: $1,167,434 (-39%) (4th week) Friday, September 12th Theaters are Invaded for a Fourth and Hopefully Final Time as Audiences Rebel at Being Asked to Literally Watch a Tumbleweed Roll Along While this weekend had two films open, neither of them have done that well for itself. Home Invasion IV squeaks over $8 million but with pretty rancid reception. Expect harsh drops for that film. Meanwhile, experimental western Tumbleweed does not prove its hypothesis, getting less than $3 million from the weekend with most audiences being baffled at best by it. Acne holds well in its second weekend. 1. Home Invasion: Part IV - Curtain Call: $8,014,057 (1st week) 2. Scythe: $7,772,582 (-43%) (3rd week) 3. Acne: $5,735,764 (-37%) (2nd week) 4. The First Water War: $2,999,618 (-36%) (3rd week) 5. Tumbleweed: $2,608,153 (1st week) 6. Seals of Honor: $2,604,805 (-42%) (2nd week) 7. Gran Turismo: $1,864,137 (-45%) (6th week) 8. Talons of the Hawk: $1,441,455 (-51%) (4th week) 9. Heremias: $1,143,823 (-35%) (11th week) 10. Dinosaucers: $1,012,150 (-41%) (7th week) Friday, September 19th Audiences Explore Raven Island as Box Office Exhales in the Final Stretch Before the Oscar and Holiday Season Starts The only opener this weekend is family adventure Raven Island, which does decent business for its opening frame. Home Invasion IV falls hard, and is likely to fall even harder next weekend, while Tumbleweed’s drop is only moderately less severe. Acne’s legs are kicking in, while audiences seem keen on seeing a bit more of those honorable seals. 1. Raven Island: $12,185,736 (1st week) 2. Scythe: $4,663,549 (-40%) (4th week) 3. Acne: $3,957,677 (-31%) (3rd week) 4. Home Invasion: Part IV - Curtain Call: $2,965,201 (-63%) (2nd week) 5. Seals of Honor: $1,719,171 (-34%) (3rd week) 6. The First Water War: $1,619,793 (-46%) (4th week) 7. Gran Turismo: $1,155,764 (-38%) (7th week) 8. Tumbleweed: $1,121,505 (-57%) (2nd week) 9. Talons of the Hawk: $807,214 (-44%) (5th week) 10. Heremias: $686,293 (-40%) (12th week) Friday, September 26th Home Invasion Just a Prelude for the Invasion of Zim, as it Dwarfs All Other Films at Box Office Invader Zim crashes into the box office with an opening weekend that is more than all of the remaining Top 10 films combined, as the weakness of overall content shows its nature yet again. Raven Island falls a good amount, but should recover some legs in following weeks. Acne continues its leggy run with whispers of an Oscar campaign for its lead actress. The bottom of the Top 10 is once again dire, and the hope is it’ll pick up once we’re in the middle of October. 1. Invader Zim: $56,197,066 (1st week) 2. Raven Island: $6,580,297 (-46%) (2nd week) 3. Acne: $2,770,373 (-30%) (4th week) 4. Scythe: $2,704,858 (-42%) (5th week) 5. Seals of Honor: $1,220,611 (-29%) (4th week) 6. Home Invasion: Part IV - Curtain Call: $1,037,820 (-65%) (3rd week) 7. The First Water War: $842,292 (-48%) (5th week) 8. Gran Turismo: $635,670 (-45%) (8th week) 9. Tumbleweed: $504,677 (-55%) (3rd week) 10. Talons of the Hawk: $435,895 (-46%) (6th week) That concludes our actuals for the day. The remaining three months (October, November, December) will be posted over the course of the next week. 2

4815162342
Here is October, November to be posted in a little bit Friday, October 3rd Zim Continues to Occupy Theaters While America Still Finds Golf Not That Interesting a Sport More frontloaded than anticipated, Invader Zim drops nearly 50% even with essentially no competition, though the ship is expected to right itself going forward. The only wide opener this week, golf comedy Fore!, bogeyed at the box office with under $6 million. Acne has another stellar hold while the other holdover mostly did decent drops. Meanwhile, buzzy foreign language film Warmth opens pretty well in a very limited release, and it’s expected to catch on with the arthouse crowd like hotcakes. 1. Invader Zim: $29,222,474 (-48%) (2nd week) 2. Fore!: $5,617,322 (1st week) 3. Raven Island: $4,079,784 (-38%) (3rd week) 4. Acne: $2,271,705 (-18%) (5th week) 5. Scythe: $1,622,914 (-40%) (6th week) 6. Seals of Honor: $915,458 (-25%) (5th week) 7. The First Water War: $530,643 (-37%) (6th week) 8. Home Invasion: Part IV – Curtain Call: $529,288 (-49%) (4th week) 9. Gran Turismo: $413,185 (-35%) (9th week) 10. Tumbleweed: $272,525 (-46%) (4th week) Warmth: $213,925 (1st week) Friday, October 10th Box Office No Longer Sleepy as Mechs Drive Major Theater Revenue Sci-Fi Actioner Mechamen opened quite well at the box office with over $60 million, providing live action blockbuster content that audiences have been craving for a while. The other opener of the week, the heavily promoted and hyped stop motion adaptation of Sleepy Hollow, opened to somewhat mixed results, echoing the very divisive reactions the film has received from both critics and audience scores. Films like Invader Zim took advantage of the spillover from audiences not wanting big action explosions or off-beat R-rated adaptations. 1. Mechamen: $60,903,437 (1st week) 2. Sleepy Hollow: $25,218,633 (1st week) 3. Invader Zim: $17,533,484 (-40%) (3rd week) 4. Raven Island: $2,692,657 (-34%) (4th week) 5. Fore!: $2,640,094 (-53%) (2nd week) 6. Warmth: $2,427,945 (2nd week) 7. Acne: $1,363,023 (-40%) (6th week) 8. Scythe: $714,082 (-56%) (7th week) 9. Seals of Honor: $613,356 (-33%) (6th week) 10. The First Water War: $313,079 (-41%) (7th week) Friday, October 17th Mechamen Stays on Top After a Hard Fall, as Studios Literally Released Nothing of Any Significance Whatsoever When the only studio release in a weekend is a critically maligned sequel to a pretty insignificant guinea pig comedy, there may be a problem with that weekend. Mechamen has a hefty drop but literally nothing is in place to challenge it for the top spot. Sleepy Hollow doesn’t fall that great, but the people who are into it are really into it, so analysts expect some long-term repeat business for it. Warmth continues expanding well into prestige cinemas. 1. Mechamen: $26,188,477 (-57%) (2nd week) 2. Sleepy Hollow: $13,870,248 (-45%) (2nd week) 3. Invader Zim: $10,870,760 (-38%) (4th week) 4. Warmth: $2,714,916 (3rd week) 5. Guinea Pigger: $2,503,061 (1st week) 6. Raven Island: $1,857,933 (-31%) (5th week) 7. Fore!: $1,504,853 (-43%) (3rd week) 8. Acne: $981,376 (-28%) (7th week) 9. Seals of Honor: $429,349 (-30%) (7th week) 10. Scythe: $399,885 (-44%) (8th week) Friday, October 24th The Only Rabbits This Weekend are Green as Audiences Aren’t Totally Spooked In a relatively quiet weekend at the box, Period spy drama Red Rabbit is our new film at the top, opening a bit softer than some analysts predicted, but it should be set up well for a run through the Thanksgiving holidays. The other opener, horror comedy #Spooked, does mediocre business at the box office with mixed reception from audiences. Warmth goes fairly wide fairly impressively, and Guinea Pigger loses a bunch of business. 1. Red Rabbit: $23,684,277 (1st week) 2. Mechamen: $14,665,547 (-44%) (3rd week) 3. #Spooked: $8,328,730 (1st week) 4. Sleepy Hollow: $8,183,446 (-41%) (3rd week) 5. Invader Zim: $6,522,456 (-40%) (5th week) 6. Warmth: $5,063,269 (4th week) 7. Raven Island: $1,207,656 (-35%) (6th week) 8. Guinea Pigger: $1,001,224 (-60%) (2nd week) 9. Fore!: $887,863 (-41%) (4th week) 10. Acne: $686,963 (-30%) (8th week) Friday, October 31st It’s All Carrots at the Box Office As Red Rabbit Handily Outpaces Grace and Mercy In a subdued close to the month of October, Red Rabbit stays on top with a solid second weekend drop, beating out prestige drama Grace and Mercy by about $5 million. Warmth finishes its expansions with a fourth place finish, having grabbed a lot of money from audiences. Now we see how well it holds without expansions to prop it up. Sleepy Hollow’s later legs seem to have started to kicked in. 1. Red Rabbit: $14,447,408 (-39%) (2nd week) 2. Grace and Mercy: $9,348,066 (1st week) 3. Mechamen: $8,506,017 (-42%) (4th week) 4. Warmth: $7,652,863 (5th week) 5. Sleepy Hollow: $5,401,074 (-34%) (4th week) 6. Invader Zim: $4,239,596 (-35%) (6th week) 7. #Spooked: $3,831,215 (-54%) (2nd week) 8. Raven Island: $688,363 (-43%) (7th week) 9. Fore!: $559,353 (-37%) (5th week) 10. Guinea Pigger: $380,465 (-62%) (3rd week)
4815162342
Friday, November 7th Audiences Take the Journey to the Land of the Crescent, While Debating Whether Mother in Fact Knows Better In a solid start to November, the two openers open to approximately $25 million or more. Period adventure Land of the Crescent whipped up nearly $40 million while taking audiences on an escape of romance, adventure, and peril, while themed-comedy Mother Knows Better barely misses the $25 million mark, targeting an audience that was in desperate need of a laugh. Most of the other holdovers do decent enough, except for Mechamen which is hit hard by some direct competition. Warmth’s first non-expansion weekend holds, fine, but it should hold much better in weeks to come. 1. Land of the Crescent: $39,528,671 (1st week) 2. Mother Knows Better: $24,905,580 (1st week) 3. Red Rabbit: $9,101,867 (-37%) (3rd week) 4. Grace and Mercy: $5,982,762 (-36%) (2nd week) 5. Warmth: $4,591,717 (-40%) (6th week) 6. Mechamen: $3,827,707 (-55%) (5th week) 7. Sleepy Hollow: $3,078,612 (-43%) (5th week) 8. Invader Zim: $2,289,381 (-46%) (7th week) 9. #Spooked: $1,953,919 (-49%) (3rd week) 10. Raven Island: $385,483 (-44%) (8th week) Friday, November 14th Audiences Tied Up in Theaters as Calendar Breathes a Little Before Thanksgiving Fantasy Rom-Com Tongue Tied opens well with a bit over $30 million, though analysts all agree that the film left money on the table by being an awkward compromise between a family and kid themed romantic comedy of errors and a more biting and cynical view of a fairy tale romance fable, instead of committing to one or the other. It should do well all things considered, but analysts will always wonder what might have been. Mother Knows Better drops hard given its frontloaded opening, but the lack of pure comedy offerings should let it do well through Thanksgiving. 1. Tongue Tied: $30,568,214 (1st week) 2. Land of the Crescent: $22,136,055 (-44%) (2nd week) 3. Mother Knows Better: $10,958,455 (-56%) (2nd week) 4. Red Rabbit: $6,371,306 (-30%) (4th week) 5. Grace and Mercy: $3,649,484 (-39%) (3rd week) 6. Warmth: $3,351,953 (-27%) (7th week) 7. Mechamen: $2,181,792 (-43%) (6th week) 8. Sleepy Hollow: $1,939,525 (-37%) (6th week) 9. Invader Zim: $1,098,902 (-52%) (8th week) 10. #Spooked: $1,094,194 (-44%) (4th week) Friday, November 21st Runaway Train Does Not Run Away With Top Spot in the Final Pre-Holiday Stretch Musical bio-drama Runaway Train does solid business for its opening weekend, but not quite enough to unseat Tongue Tied from #1. Warmth continues to hold well with older and arthouse audiences, as audiences remain occupied with theaters giving most things pretty decent holds. 1. Tongue Tied: $17,475,181 (-43%) (2nd week) 2. Runaway Train: $16,722,716 (1st week) 3. Land of the Crescent: $13,502,993 (-39%) (3rd week) 4. Mother Knows Better: $6,027,150 (-45%) (3rd week) 5. Red Rabbit: $3,822,783 (-40%) (5th week) 6. Warmth: $2,513,964 (-25%) (8th week) 7. Grace and Mercy: $2,262,680 (-38%) (4th week) 8. Sleepy Hollow: $1,318,877 (-32%) (7th week) 9. Mechamen: $1,309,075 (-40%) (7th week) 10. Invader Zim: $659,341 (-40%) (9th week) Wednesday, November 26th (5-Day Thanksgiving Weekend) Audiences Inspect the Movies on Offer and Pay More Than a Penny, Avoiding a Dark Future In a strong Thanksgiving weekend, we have two films open to over $35 million for the weekend proper. Inspector Gadget and Penny opens to a shade over $50 million, with almost $76 million for the 5-day, while long-gestating sci-fi action sequel Ultraman: Dark Future opens to a bit under $55 million for the five-day, as audiences again were hungering for some live action blockbusting. Ultraman’s audiences aren’t quite as enamored with the film as they had hoped, so this film might fall like a stone going forward. All the holdovers raked in plenty of cash over the 5-day holiday. 1. Inspector Gadget and Penny: $50,815,236/$75,904,154 (1st week) 2. Ultraman: Dark Future: $35,107,633/$53,964,106 (1st week) 3. Tongue Tied: $12,931,633 (-26%)/$19,145,892 (3rd week) 4. Runaway Train: $11,705,901 (-30%)/$15,925,167 (2nd week) 5. Land of the Crescent: $8,776,946 (-35%)/$12,194,271 (4th week) 6. Mother Knows Better: $4,339,548 (-28%)/$6,180,742 (4th week) 7. 4815162342
Friday, December 5th Post-Thanksgiving Tumbles Befall Some Movies as Hell Moderately Breaks Loose The inflation of the prior holiday weekend results in a notable drop for Inspector Gadget and a heavy one for Ultraman, with everything else of note dropping in the 40-45% range. The sole opener of the week is schlock horror Father III, which has its dedicated fanbase but expect them to dry up quick for it. 1. Inspector Gadget and Penny: $24,391,313 (-52%) (2nd week) 2. Ultraman: Dark Future: $13,340,900 (-62%) (2nd week) 3. Father III - All Hell Breaks Loose: $10,459,837 4. Tongue Tied: $7,112,398 (-45%) (4th week) 5. Runaway Train: $6,672,363 (-43%) (3rd week) 6. Land of the Crescent: $4,915,089 (-44%) (5th week) 7. Mother Knows Better: $1,996,192 (-54%) (5th week) 8. Red Rabbit: $1,656,029 (-43%) (7th week) 9. Warmth: $1,221,786 (-40%) (10th week) 10. Grace and Mercy: $1,102,377 (-42%) (6th week) Friday, December 12th Extreme Sports Attract Audience Eyes away from The Baddest Movie of Them All The extreme sports action flick SSX opens well to take the top spot, though analysts believe it is due for a pretty rough second weekend. The other opener, music doc Baddest of Them All, opens around the same range as the other docs this year, and is believed to also be on a path for drying up relatively quickly. Inspector Gadget recovers a bit in its holds, while Ultraman is not doing that well with quite a gamut in front of it. Most of the other holdovers steady themselves as well. 1. SSX - Action/Sports: $27,317,530 (1st week) 2. Inspector Gadget and Penny: $15,122,614 (-38%) (3rd week) 3. Ultraman: Dark Future: $6,937,268 (-48%) (3rd week) 4. Tongue Tied: $4,765,306 (-33%) (5th week) 5. Runaway Train: $4,270,312 (-36%) (4th week) 6. The Baddest of Them All: $4,187,744 (1st week) 7. Father III - All Hell Breaks Loose: $3,765,541 (-64%) (2nd week) 8. Land of the Crescent: $3,342,260 (-32%) (6th week) 9. Mother Knows Better: $1,117,867 (-44%) (6th week) 10. Red Rabbit: $1,076,418 (-35%) (8th week) Friday, December 19th Queen of the Box Office While it doesn’t open as high as box office analysts had projected, the epic fantasy adaptation The Queen Who Never Was just scoots by the $100 million mark, the first and only film of the year to hit that benchmark on the 3-day opening weekend. The other opener for the weekend, Dancing in the Doghouse, draws on the desire for movie soaps and past goodwill to open decently. Action and fantasy themed films drop hard this week as expected, with Father III well on the way out for a child emancipation. Other holdovers drop decently, though the market impact was felt in general. 1. The Queen Who Never Was: $100,844,482 (1st week) 2. Dancing in the Doghouse: $22,802,617 (1st week) 3. SSX: $11,200,187 (-59%) (2nd week) 4. Inspector Gadget and Penny: $9,073,568 (-40%) (4th week) 5. Ultraman: Dark Future: $2,774,907 (-60%) (4th week) 6. Runaway Train: $2,604,890 (-39%) (5th week) 7. Tongue Tied: $2,239,693 (-53%) (6th week) 8. The Baddest of Them All: $2,010,117 (-52%) (2nd week) 9. Land of the Crescent: $1,537,439 (-54%) (7th week) 10. Father III - All Hell Breaks Loose: $1,468,560 (-61%) (3rd week) Thursday, December 25th (4-Day Christmas Weekend) There are Queens and Vixens Among Us in the Doghouse Buoyed by the start of the Christmas holidays on Thursday, that momentum carries over into a bountiful holiday weekend, with most holdovers increasing from the prior week. Dancing in the Doghouse stays essentially flat for the 3-day, and SSX drops a little bit to echo its reception being weaker than other films, same as with Ultraman: Dark Future. Queen Who Never Was narrowly avoids a 50% drop and did grand business on Christmas Day as well. The two openers also did solid business, with Among Us doing almost $50 million for the 4-day and the Vixen sequel getting close to $20 million for the 4-day. Expect plenty of strong weekdays for the rest of the holidays. 1. The Queen Who Never Was: $53,447,575 (-47%)/$70,195,226 (2nd week) 2. Among Us: $34,693,026/$47,871,682 (1st week) 3. Dancing in the Doghouse: $21,662,486 (-5%)/$28,068,835 (2nd week) 4. Vixen and the Castle of Doom: $12,829,306/$18,247,801 (1st week) 5. Inspector Gadget and Penny: $10,888,281 (+20%)/$14,219,082 (5th week) 6. SSX: $10,080,168 (-10%)/$13,817,658 (3rd week) 7. Runaway Train: $3,256,112 (+25%)/$4,690,562 (6th week) 8. Tongue Tied: $2,911,600 (+30%)/$4,519,726 (7th week) 9. Ultraman: Dark Future: $2,358,670 (-15%)/$3,308,144 (5th week) 10. Land of the Crescent: $2,029,419 (+32%)/$2,987,460 (8th week) And that wraps up the weekend actuals for the year. Domestic and Worldwide Totals will be calculated following the release of Oscar nominations
