Sean
Greetings to my fellow BoxOffice.com users. Lately, I have felt a great desire to launch a box office competition here on this forum, and I have finally decided what I would like to have this contest be about. Now that the 2012 fall movie season is underway, I have noticed that many "cinephiles" have come up with competitions dedicated to predicting the final grosses of certain major releases of this promising season in cinema. I, myself, have taken part in one of these contests, KJ's Fall 2012 Box Office Contest, over on World of KJ. However, I thought that a far more engaging game would involve predicting the final Tomatometer scores of these titles. I have been a longtime reader of Doug Norrie's This Rotten Week blog over on Cinema Blend, and I thought that it would an exciting experience to replicate this little contest in predicting as many of the fall movie season's most-anticipated titles. Below, I have listed a series of films opening over the course of the 2012 fall movie season. Some of these titles have already hit the big screen, and so guessing where their Tomatometer scores will "level off" should not be much of a challenge. Others, however, are far more difficult to predict. That being said, points will be allocated to each player based on the mathematical differences between his or her predictions and the final percentages on Rotten Tomatoes. For example, if Les Miserables ends up with an 89%, and the player predicted that it would receive an 86%, then they will receive three points. Likewise, if he or she "over-predicts" and guesses that Les Mis will finish with a 93%, when it in fact "levels off" at a 90%, will receive three points. The player with the least number of points at the end of the contest will win. Kind of like golf. The contest will draw to a close in two weeks, on Friday, October 19, 2012, and winners will be determined on Friday, January 18, 2013. That being said, I cannot guarantee any prizes at this moment, seeing as I have not yet asked the fine people who run BoxOffice.com if this is permitted, but for right now, this competition will be played entirely for "kicks" and bragging rights. The rules are simple. Below are the films that you are to predict the Tomatometer scores for. Failure to submit predictions for all of the films listed i will result in your predictions being disregarded. Yes, I have included many September films, so those should be a given. Others will not be as much fun to predict. That being said, have fun, and in the words of Bane, the main antagonist of one of my favorite films of the year, a little indie charmer called The Dark Knight Rises: "Let the games begin!" Here are the films that you are to predict the Tomatometer scores for. Note that I will be using the percentages based on all of the critics' reviews for each film. Have fun. Amour (Love) Anna Karenina Alex Cross Argo A Royal Affair Atlas Shrugged: Part II Butter Chasing Mavericks Cirque du Soleil: World's Away 3D Cloud Atlas Django Unchained Dredd 3D End of Watch Finding Nemo 3D Flight Frankenweenie Fun Size Here Comes the Boom Hotel Transylvania House at the End of the Street Hyde Park on Hudson Jack Reacher Les Miserables Life of Pi Lincoln Looper Killing Them Softly Monsters, Inc. 3D On the Road Paranormal Activity 4 Parental Guidance Promised Land Pitch Perfect Raiders of the Lost Ark: The IMAX Experience Red Dawn Resident Evil: Retribution Rise of the Guardians Seven Psychopaths Sinister Silent Hill: Revelations 3D Skyfall Taken 2 The Cold Light of Day The Guilt Trip The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey The Impossible The Man with the Iron Fists The Master The Paperboy The Perks of Being a Wallflower The Silver Linings Playbook The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2 The Words This Is 40 Trouble with the Curve Vamps V/H/S Won't Back Down Wreck-It Ralph Zero Dark Thirty This competition isn't for everybody. After all, it is the ultimate mind game in predicting the box office of the 2012 fall movie season, as many of these films have yet to receive any critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Either way, I hope to see as many people take part as possible. Keep in mind that I reserve the right to add to this list whenever I desire. Any changes will be announced in the forum below. Remember, submissions will be accepted up until Friday, October 19, 2012 at 11:59 P.M. PST. Winners will be announced on Friday, January 18, 2012. Any films pushed back from their original release dates will not be included in the final calculations utilized to determine the winner. Enjoy.
