No, the holdovers got hit more by no holiday than FF6.

 

FF6 won't double Fast Five. Fast Five made 1.8m so FF6 would have to make 3.6m. Unlikely with After Earth and Hangover 3 out in 2 weeks. I think it will get to 3m with incredible WOM (still at 100% approval after opening weekend) but 3.6m seems to be out of reach at this point.

That is great for Fast & Furious 6. Star Trek 2 had a nice hold. Very strong for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. It nearly beat Star Trek Into Darkness's admissions. Iron Man 3 did alright. Big bump for The Great Gatsby. Weak for Christmas Rose. 21 and Over has been deserted. Quartet leaps over The Call. Ugly for The Call. Good for Searching for Sugar Man.

Huge number for Fast & Furious 6. Normally, films of this nature are very frontloaded so to make over 80% of its opening day on Monday is great news. Star Trek 2 bounced back after a slow weekend. Stunning for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Decent for Iron Man 3. The Great Gatsby is doing well after an average opening weekend. Bad for Christmas Rose. Not good for 21 and Over. Quartet is the only other film besides Pee Mak to increase on Monday. Ouch for The Call. Searching for Sugar Man did pretty well.

Way better than Battleship's 44% drop on its 2nd Wednesday.

Good for Fast & Furious 6. It will blast through 2m this weekend. American Dreams in China is a minor hit. It will open higher than Lost in Thailand. Nice holds for Star Trek 2, Iron Man 3 and The Great Gatsby. Outstanding hold for Pee Mak especially with The Haunting in Connecticut 2 out. Ghastly for The Haunting in Connecticut 2. I'm not sure if it will even make 25% of The Haunting in Connecticut's OW. Dead Man Down should have changed its name to Dead on Arrival. Populaire did pretty bad. Awful for Christmas Rose.

Populaire wasn't very popular with audiences today.

Very good for Fast & Furious 6. It overtook Fast 5 and is now the highest grossing Fast & Furious film in the franchise. Decent for American Dreams in China. Pee Mak Phra Khanong continues to rise. It moved past $750,000 today ($5.82m HK). Not good for Star Trek 2. Although The Haunting in Connecticut 2 increased today, it only has a small chance of making $100,000 this weekend. Good for the Great Gatsby. It becomes Baz Luhrmann's first 1m movie in HK. On the weaker side for Iron Man 3 but on the flip side, it cruised past $13.5m today. Populaire did better today. Bad for Dead Man Down. Reviews coming in are terrible. Awful for Christmas Rose.

Fast & Furious 6 took off last Saturday and Sunday so pre-sales are down substantially this weekend. OK for American Drams in China. Better for Star Trek 2. The Great Gatsby performed well. Iron Man 3 is starting to sag. Great performance from Pee Mak Phra Khanong again. Better for Populaire. Poor for The Haunting in Connecticut 2. Bad for Christmas Rose. Good for The Garden of Words.

The Wind Rises, the next Hayao Miyazaki film, is scheduled for release in Japan July 20. In HK, the last 3 Studio Ghilbi releases have come out in the winter. I expect this one to be delayed until Chinese New Year 2014.

Fast & Furious 6 is pummeling the rest of the field. American Dreams in China had a good increase. Excellent again for Pee Mak Phra Khanong. Better for Star Trek 2. Not bad for The Great Gatsby. The Haunting in Connecticut 2's odds of $100,000 went up to just about half. Not great for Iron Man 3. Weak for Populaire. Christmas Rose shriveled up this week. Dead Man Down did terribly.

The Hangover 3 vs. After Earth notes- After Earth is well ahead of Hangover 3 with morning shows- Hangover 3 has much stronger night shows than After Earth- Theaters tipped the scales in Hangover 3's favor on Friday with more screens or the biggest screen- After Earth has IMAX, which accounts for about 10% of total box office.- If Hangover 3 is to beat After Earth, it will need more of the adult population to win. Hangover 2 had a low multiplier which meant that students/teenagers made up most of its demographic.- M. Night Shyamalan's last 3 films have opened in the $200,000-350,000 range.Prediction: The Hangover 3 (victor) - $850,000, After Earth - $750,000

Not bad for The Hangover 3. Hangover 3 pulling out an opening day pre-sales victory is good news. It will win this weekend. Hangover 3's pre-sales are -20% from Hangover 2 but it has higher ticket prices to compensate for weaker admissions. After Earth did pretty bad. OK for Fast & Furious 6.
