  1. If there is going to be a Supporting Actress push for Hustlers it should be Madeline Brewer, SO good and memorable, a true heat check performance. I guess STX would have to nominally campaign Palmer and Reinhart too, as not to hurt anyone's feelings. JLo has leading lady stah screentime and should be pushed in Best Actress. Wu is really strong as well, if this goes Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes, I can see them both getting nominated in lead there.
  2. Kinda loved this? But anyone expecting the whole movie to be like the trailer might be disappointed when the movie takes a dramatic turn. I wouldn't say it rises to the level of a bait-and-switch. The premise is pretty dark, it should have given people the hint that the whole movie wasn't going to be a barrel of laughs. It felt like JLo was in the movie maybe 5 percent less than Constance Wu; there have been Best Actress winners with less relative screentime than her. They will probably push her in the category that seems like a safer bet, but honestly I think she should go lead. Wu is quite good in this as well, Lopez just has a more flamboyant character. The "...and Cardi B" credit was clearly in exchange for them using her song in every single trailer/ad, right? And if anybody went in thinking Lizzo had anything important to do here, bless their hearts.
  3. There wss set buzz from other cast/crew from The Dark Knight about Heath maybe getting nominated, even before he died. Al Pacino got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Dick Tracy, years earlier. A History of Violence got an acting nomination, Viggo Mortensen was considered a snub, and it's based on a graphic novel. Also, it wasn't comic book movie but Johnny Depp got a Best Actor nod with a summer action comedy based on a Disney theme park ride. He even won the SAG Award that year! As for Heath, I doubt the Academy voters cared as much about making up for a TDK snub (after all, they were the very set of people who denied the movie in Best Picture) as much as they wanted to honor a respected young actor in what was basically their last chance, and the performance was strong, besides. Ledger was only 26 when he was nominated for Brokeback and the feeling then was like it always is with younger leading men, that winning Best Actor at that age is "too soon", but he was now in the club and would have plenty of time to give other great performances... Anyway, Joaquin can probably win for a Joker movie that isn't a typical CBM, but it's still early and it's not like he's playing a real person, so the win isn't quite locked just yet. Just look at this category a year ago, the end result was definitely not what anyone expected last September...
  4. The only people buying tickets for a Kendrick Brothers movie at this point know exactly what their stories are about, and they deliver. Overcomer won't do as well as War Room but will probably be their second biggest movie, maybe even adjusted for inflation.
  5. IDK, I was looking up reviews on Youtube yesterday and saw some "Hustlers is as dangerous as Joker" and "The PC critics are wrong about Hustlers!" type results. One from a channel with "Chad" in the name, so I wasn't clicking on that. Overall, I agree many straight men won't think it's the worst thing ever if they get "dragged" to see Hustlers by their wives/girlfriends, or really want to see it themselves. They might like it, or not, and that’s fine.
  6. LMAO, the collective outrage about the movie skipping the space diaper part of the Crazy Diaper Astronaut Story made Twitter Moments! It's in the headlines for published reviews, people are so disappointed. For the record, the real-life astronaut eventually denied using diapers on the trip. https://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/astronaut-love-triangle-attacker-lisa-nowak-wear-diaper/story?id=12932069
  7. Some lukewarm reviews from the big Youtube channels, not totally surprising if you believe the target audience of Hustlers is women and gay guys. Speaking of... (mild spoilers) : One criticism I'm seeing reappear is about the pacing, but even the people "meh" about it say JLo is amazing.
  8. Michelle Yeoh seems to be speaking about Henry Golding's character, but she could be talking about someone else, or basing it entirely on how Emilia's demeanor/attitude have improved, without ever actually seeing Emilia and Henry together.
  9. Oh, this is the movie Kermode was going on about in the summer, it sounded so dreadful and wasn't a huge hit in the UK, either, I thought we would be spared.
  10. This gets released in the UK on Friday so it's already had the premiere, reviews are showing up.
  11. The Super Bowl is one week before the Oscars this year, but I just looked it up, the game falls in the middle of the voting period (Jan 30 to Feb 4). If she gets nominated, it would be huge visibility but there would also be "Is this what we want from a serious actress?" takes, too. I know awards followers who have snarked about Jennifer showing up at the Oscars so much when she's never been close to a nod, they are so used to looking down on her as an actress, I wonder how they'll react to her being in contention. I remember the massive denial about Bullock with The Blind Side, though Hustlers is much more Awards Twitter friendly than that...
  12. Nowadays there is a huge aversion to the idea of a movie having two leads of the same gender, even though it happens all the time in every genre. Like, is Kevin Hart supporting to The Rock in that CIA movie they did together? People only argue this about awards bait. Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs, was he in it for 20 minutes? Lopez will definitely be more important to the story than Lili Reinhart and Kiki Palmer, even if she has less screentime than Wu.
  13. Back in the studio system heyday, lead vs. supporting placements were often a headliner vs. character actor thing and not so much about actual screen time. With that mentality, JLo is 100 percent a leading lady stah! who doesn't belong in the "lesser" category. All of the reviews are about her, too bad we aren't going to get unfiltered Constance Wu tweets on how she really feels about that, lol. I haven't seen Hustlers but the article it's based on is mostly about the two women ringleaders, I wouldn't say one was that much more important than the other. The movie might have shifted the focus, though.
  14. Look up "Jennifer Lopez Movieline interview", in her younger days she was definitely not lacking in ego and rubbed some in the industry the wrong way. That was a long time ago, granted. I just remember reading some, "Does the Academy really respect Sly? Will they vote for him because he gave one good performance and ignore all the bad ones?" takes that season. With Jennifer, there is a sentiment out there that she did a bunch of romcoms and chased after pop diva-dom, squandering what could have been a more respectable acting career (OTOH, she's also admired for carving out a lucrative career in showbiz when Hollywood hasn't had the best history with Latin women). In a contest with Laura Dern, for example, there will be some voters who feel Dern has a much more impressive overall acting resume than Lopez, so that makes her more deserving.
  15. Melissa Leo was already winning precursors when those "Consider" ads showed up, people were confused about why she was doing it and speculated those ads might hurt her chances to win. This article goes into the history of nominees who took out their own ads, the track record is mixed: https://deadline.com/2011/02/oscar-melissa-leo-goes-rogue-with-her-own-personal-campaign-ads-103757/ I follow JLo on Instagram, in her IG stories she's been putting up screencaps of Hustlers reviews where she's praised in the headline. She will be relentless on the campaign trail, can't wait! I think there will be some snobbery about her overall career from Oscar voters, that's what hurt Stallone in the end according to awards bloggers.
  16. Incredible premise... https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3555796/smart-phone-app-predicts-youll-die-countdown-cast-includes-annabelle-creation-star/
  17. Great reviews, really perplexed by the rushed September release, although good movies should come out all times of the year.
  18. Clearly Belichick has mastered mild control and orchestrated AB's meltdown in order to ultimately screw over the Steelers...
  19. Joker gets the Golden Lion, it may not win, but a Best Picture nomination seems extremely likely now.
  20. Good luck with that! AB is totally unreliable and if there even is a next team, they'd be foolish not to demand a mental health evaluation first.
