  1. Okay. :) Sometimes the critics and audiences don't agree (I for one disagreed with AMERICAN HUSTLE and CRASH, LAWD....), and sometimes they do: Titanic, Avatar, TDK, Avengers, GOTG... So.

Plus, is there anything wrong with me calling TF fun, maybe disposable, cinema? Something I can watch with pout a critical eye and just shut my brain off for two hours? The first one is good, I liked that. The rest are... Okay.

Wait, why are we arguing again? I am basically agreeing with you, LOL!

Though the next few weeks will be VERY interesting to see how 50 Shades holds up. Will it be as big a phenomenon as the books? Will it eventually become a classic like Basic Instinct or Showgirls?

Going to lunch and then to my showing of BONDAGE TIIIIIIIIIME!

  2. How are the Transformers films not quality?  That might your opinion but it is obviously not shared by most.  So just because you have an opinion, don't pretend it is shared by all.

Okay. Your post sounded a bit testy. I'm simply stating the RT scores on those movies is low, but they are doing gangbusters at the boxoffice, once again showing that, on some terms, critical quality is not really an indicator of success. Commercially, though, it's obviously a different story. I saw the first two TFs in the theaters, so the franchise appealed to me to do that at least initially. I'm going to see 50 even though I have major issues with the writing of the books. The parts I managed to read at least.

And it's all just opinions anyway. But I also don't really dig ridiculing people who have genuine issues with the books. Just like I don't dig people ridiculing those who love them.

  3. I so agree with this, the double standard with violence/ sex is laughable.

    People don t realize it.

It s like Wolf of Wall Street last year that offended a lot of people/ critics because you saw debauchery/ orgies in the film so people were saying the movie glorified that lifestyle bullshit.

Fuck this, Goodfellas and Casino and some other gangsters movies are considered modern masterpiece and all the " heroes" of these films do way worse shit than anything you see in Wolf of wall street or fifty shades. Did Scorcese glorified the incredible brutality of the Goodfellas/ Casino characters ?

But as you say, violence gets a free pass.

The moment sex is involved, everyone looses their minds.

You can turn on the tv at any time and every cop show involves gruesome murders and serial killers and everyone is fine with that.

    Hypocrites in deed.

And if tHe books are as bad and lousy written as some say and are about abuse, why they were so goddamn succesful then ? I think some people have trouble understanding the mere concept of fantasy ...

Well.... we live in a world where Michael Bay is a successful filmmaker, and the TRANSFORMERS movies make bank without being qualitatively "good" films. My opinion, of course. They're fun, disposable things, nothing more or less. Same with 50 Shades. Lots of people read them, lots of other people hate them. I tried giving it a fair shake, like a piece of sexy fluff. The writing was too atrocious for me to continue. But it is what it is.

I mean, I kind of find it funny that people are bagging on people for calling the writing bad too. I don't understand what's so wrong about having that opinion. Badly done violence sucks, badly done sex also sucks.

  4. Pretty amazing to me.....you can have ultra violent films like Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction and a litany of others and no one says boo about them. But have a film about S&M, dominance yet consensual sex/dominance and the moral police come out in full force. Why isn't there the moral outcry about violence in films? I can even remember there was the moral police out in full force for Basic Instinct. It seems anytime there's a film that makes gobs of cash and it deals with kinky sex, the moral police come out to play. I'd love to have a look into the lives of those who say this is a bad example for women and it's misogynistic and so on....let's see how squeaky clean all these people are.

    Hypocrites.

Hm.... I don't know if some of what your saying is directed at my criticism. Well, I mean, I have my own issues with some UBER violent movies as well; I can't watch rape in a film or television for example (I basically stopped watching stuff like GOT altogether). Excessive violence without a point is a huge turn off for me as well. I can watch sex in a movie or porno, fine, read alllllll the good erotica I can get my grubby hands on, but yeah, it would have to at least be written with some skill, have characterization along with sex, etc... Reading 50Shades, James just wasn't able to tell a story with the sex that in any way compelled me to read beyond chapter 6 or 7. Right now, I'm giving Sylvia Day's BARED TO YOU a shot; way better written, with far more intriguing characters that don't seem like cardboard. Sme with Alisha Rai's A GENTLEMAN IN THE STREETS, and that erotica has a woman of color as the protagonist!

I am really excited to see Dakota Johnson actually try to do something with a vapid, frail character like Anastasia Steele though. That is another reason I want to see it -- to send HOLLYWOOD a message that women led, women directed sex movies can sell. And I don't want to bring down anyone who loves the book at all; it just was NOT my cuppa (and, it seems, Talkie's either!) I just really wish that the material adapted had been better. If 50 Shades is to be my adult romance at the movies for now, then so be it :)

Anyways.... I get to see it 1:50 today! WHOOO!

  5. I think sex scares a lot of guys. It's the only logical thing I can come up with as to why there is so much backlash to this film before people see it.

I bet if the internet existed IN 1972, boys and young men would be making puerile jokes about Last tango in Paris as well. So much hate and no one can tell us why they do.

Hon, I *love* my erotica, I just demand it be less crappy and misogynistic/abusive than 50 SHADES. Also, pull-2-publish fanfiction is a really lazy trend in publishing, IMO.

However, I'm seeing the movie tomorrow b/c I want to support a female-helmed franchise starter, and I want to see if it'll make me hate the book less, LOL!

  6. But it's drop was considerably softened by Presidents Day and it was still 49% so...

I was wondering how it's doing overseas, now with 50 kicking all the ass.

This year has already been a good one for hatetracking movies. First MORTDECAI, then JA, now 50 (though I desperately want Johnson to drive the franchise for the next two movies. I hope they don't Hardwicke her like after the first Twilight movie. I know she's already been announced as the director for the next two.)

  7. Has this been posted?

3RD UPDATE, SATURDAY AM: If Fifty Shades Of Grey handcuffs Universal’s very early international weekend estimate of $158.3M, it will become the studio’s 2nd biggest offshore opening frame ever, just behind Fast & Furious 6’s $160.3M. Outside sources whisper that it is likely to climax even higher than that for this five-day session. It is expected to be far-and-away the biggest opening weekend of all-time for an R-rated film overseas, whipping previous title holder The Matrix Revolutionsat $117M.

OMG the ceaseless punning enabled by 50 Shades….

    :D  :D  :D

  8. Oyelowo's performance being completely left out of the Actor race is insulting. MLK is already such a larger-than-life person, but he channeled him in such a way to make him more balanced. The humor in parts, his way with his family and wife, the way he handled the activism and the President and worked through his channels of power... DO delivered and then some. It was on par with Kingsley's Gandhi for me.

I didn't have any issues with the LBJ stuff b/c I felt that the movie was drawing parallels between him and King's path, the compromises and sacrifices that both men had to make. Johnson's arc was a but shallowly done, but understandable because he wasn't the focus. The movie's not called, "Martin and Johnson."

I really want to know why this isn't getting more at the box office? Is it because audiences don't want to feel like sitting in a classroom for two hours? Is it because AMERICAN SNIPER sucked all the air out of the weekend?

  9. I mentioned this in the review thread, but the epilogue in this movie made me teary-eyed and gave me goosebumps. It was a PG-13 movie that felt as brutal as 12 Years a Slave at points. It's continuously emotional and grounded by a central phenomenal performance. It manages to be shocking despite being based on a true story.

It's literally everything I was sold on and then disappointed about Unbroken, fulfilled to what I hoped it to be. Truly fantastic.

Ditto. It's breathtaking to me, and I hate that so much of the conversation around it revolves around LBJ and his depiction in the movie, which wasn't nearly as broadly fictitiously depicted as, oh say.... AMADEUS! That movie straight up said Saileri killed Mozart. Did it make the movie any less a masterpiece? Hell no! And the LBJ stuff was minuscule in comparison. Damn.

This movie was amazing, in every way possible. The snubbing of this, and it's box office run, are absolutely criminal.

  10. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/12/10/tuesday-final-ratings-victorias-secret-fashion-show-supernatural-the-mindy-project-adjusted-down/337776/

5.29 total viewers, so I think it's pretty much flat with last week. 1.7 in the top demo. Better ratings than the overall season though down from the season premiere.

I wonder if the Live+7 numbers will be high, given all the buzz for this week's show.

  11. I don't think the love is over from Ward's side. Skye shooting Ward just shows how much she really loves him.

    *snort* That is awesome :)

That was a really great episode for me. Hoping Agent Carter makes the wait until early March bearable. The ratings went up for AoS after the first season started streaming on Netflix and stayed up, so hoping that even more people catch up over the break, watch AC and then come back for the last half of the season. The show runners really did plot out this first half pretty perfectly; the quality of the show (despite a couple of little stumbles) went way up for me. And I do feel the actors *coughChloeBennettBrettDaltoncoughcough* rose to meet the material.

Realizing that Skye/Daisy/Quake is the first Asian Avenger gives me all the happy. AND MACK!! AND RAINA!! AND DOUBLE MING-NA!!

Really excited that Blair Underwood will be coming on as Melinda's ex. He's gorgeous. (AND HE'S 50 TOO WTF?!?!)
