Excuse you, if someone said the same thing about the HP or Divergent series, I'd say the exact same thing! ANd I'm a pretty damn staunch fan of Fault in Our Stars, so.
I don't watch rom coms, not really my thing, but I wouldn't call people who loved them "sheep" either

Calling people "sheep" who like movies you don't deem worthy isn't exactly just expressing an opinion. It's being insultingly dismissive and obnoxious about not just other people's opinions but other people.
What Talisman says!

All he did was express an opinion that's outside the norm here. You're the one who's calling people "nefarious". Yes, "elitist" is a negative term... but one man's connoisseur is another's elitist.
I'm fine with expressing an opinion… I take issue with blanket calling fans of a particular thing "sheep".
That's all.
And maybe the "elitist" tag was inaccurate. One's taste can be elite in movies, or even considered "snobby." Lord knows I like those types of movies, but I just wanted to take issue with what I found to be the more insulting parts of his posts. Which, of course, you may not find insulting…
So it's all subjective

No, wait… what?
Is this actually a thing?

All superhero films follow the same parental/familial storyline, and the same villain one.
Besides the Dark Knight, I think there have been no great villains in any superhero film. X-Men are alright but they play a bit with the otherwise stale concept of superhero/supervillain and origin and whatnot.
I didn't say anything about money. Sequels in general make 60% of their money overseas, check first entries for superhero films and US is 50%+ or close to it.
I'm talking about critics and audiences. Americans love it for some reason. Guardians of the Galaxy, Winter Soldier, Big Hero Six were really all nothing special but they get that bump. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but yeah, for example, I didn't even really like Interstellar and it had its problems but it tried for something more unlike all three of and mostly all superhero films, yet they are always praised. Marvel has also grown stale and boring but everyone laps it up like sheep. The standard they are held to is so much lower and so many more things are forgiveable. It's a joke.
And, yeah, I do believe I'm right because I've seen enough of the movies and critical response to detect the leniency to which they are graded. I'm not talking about outright Green Lantern trash, but the very average stuff Marvel gets away with. I think both Iron Man 2 and 3 are fresh over 70% even, there's that bias, I don't know why, but there is, whilst other stuff gets rated more harshly.
It's fine to feel that way, but I think there's something about your post that comes across as very elitist. Like, you just cannot believe that anyone could love these movies, or that we don't recognize that there are similar patterns in the story. I think it's really, really dismissive of fans of certain CBMs to call them "sheep". Like… why go there?
The superhero origin story does follow somewhat similar beats. The MCU origin stories do it, Spider-Man and X-Men did it, BIG HERO 6 does it, but so does… *gasp* Batman Begins and Superman/Man of Steel too.
There are some elements that stay the same, and others that are different. Also, what makes each of these movies better than some is the presentation, the way they can use certain details about the characters for clever moments, wit and relatability. The quality of visual effects plays a big part in them too. These movies are meant to be crowd pleasers; is it so beyond the realm of possibility that a crowd pleasing movie *gasp* also gathers some critical acclaim as well? Like, basically a majority of critics praising a movie that delivers fun, pleasing moments?
Maybe something like INTERSTELLAR, while being unique, was simply too divisive for some critics. It should be pointed out that 73% on RT and whatever it has on Metacritic hardly indicates that it is a critical flop; there are very few CBMs that scored higher than IS.
That's fine if you don't like them, but really, you present your opinion by basically insulting those of us who do. What's the point in doing that?

I wouldn't be so optimistic about Penguins...Madagascar is far from being the best animated franchise ever...The 3rd movie was meh.
And this one will be a spin-off so I have a bad feeling..
Oh really? I *LOVED* Madagascar 3… and I thought the first two were pretty 'mehhhhhh'.

The most exciting development of tonight's episode:
the city in Coulson's schematic was undoubtedly Attilan, the home of the Inhumans. The Inhumans are a hidden offshoot of humanity created by alien Kree genetic manipulation millions of years ago. The blue alien in the guest house was of course Kree, and the infusion of his blood compelled Coulson and the other subjects to continue to search for Attilan he started. In the comics, the Kree considered the Inhumans sort of like slaves. They were bred to eventually become super-powered foot soldiers in the millennia-long war with the Skrull. The dead Kree may have been seeking Attilan to claim its populace and take them off Earth.
I almost screamed when they showed what Coulson was drawing. AOS instantly became linked to Phase Three, Cosmic Marvel and possibly the Infinity War itself. Well done, Marvel!
I DIED WHEN I SAW THAT!!! GAH!!!!
Yeah, I can't wait for even more. That was perfection. I like that AOS seems to be showing the future of the MCU rather than playing catchup.

But Madagascar has the brand name behind it and a pretty consistent box office record.
I'm hoping it's good…. taking my kid to see it, if only to continue this streak where we see awesome animated films in theaters.
I'm hoping that after taking a big hit the first week Penguins is released, BH6 and it can coexist as the holidays draw near. Then again, that's as long as Penguins isn't complete shite.

Everyone that my husband has talked to at his job (all adults, all science/movie geeks) thought BH6 was amazing!
My husband favorite movie this year

I'm gonna go ahead and pre-judge Annie and say it will probably be on many top 10 worst of the year lists.
Judging from the way things have gone this year, if people hate ANNIE, I predict I will fucking love it like burning OMG!

I agree. I saw BH6 with some kids and of the 7 trailers we saw, Annie was the one they were the most into. There's too much competition for it to really go nuts, but I think 120-140m is quite possible.
Also, I'm not sure Into the Woods is going to be big. The trailer doesn't make at all clear its a musical, and while the subject matter says its a kids movie, the trailer is a bit dark and entirely lacking in actual kids, princess-y looking young women, or anything particularly cute or magic-y.
So, to sum up, its trailer is deceptive as to what the movie is actually like, its giving very confused messages about its target audience, and its opening into a metric f**k-ton of competition. My suspicion is that its actual target audience is dedicated Glee watchers and there just aren't that many of them. Its opening on Christmas day, the week after Hobbit, Annie, and Night at the Museum 3 (as others have noted, any of the non-Hobbit movies would have been a LOT better off if they'd opened a couple weeks earlier, but here we are. Maybe they were scared of Exodus for some reason?).
Sheeeeeeit… I legitimately teared up during that fucking Annie trailer on the big screen. My son was all sorts of into it too, and he loves musicals, so.
Yeah, I guess your range would be pretty good for it, given the competition.

Just to say… all these potential clubs are cracking me up!

Maybe if Annie had opened 2 weeks before it did, but putting it up against the Hobbit AND Night at the Museum 3 was a huge mistake. There are no family movies the prior two weeks and then Into the Woods opens a week later.
I forget that Hobbit and NATM is coming out LOL!
I'll choose Annie and maybe NATM to see with my kid over break.
-
Why just shits and giggles? That's quite possible.
I am convinced ANNIE's going to over perform. The last trailer made it look like the perfect holiday movie.
$200+ million isn't out of the question.
ETA: okay, maybe $160million-170. The movie looks great, okay?

That is a pretty bold overestimate from Paramount though… all for the sake of, "IT GROSSED $50 MILLION OW!"
That said, I'm disappointed that it didn't get higher, if only to have two top grossers in the $50 million range. Interested to see how good the legs are, if it plays like a typical Nolan film.
BH6 is so much love though. Wish it could've broken $60 million, but it increased from WIR and likely on track for $200 million plus.

Haha. Whoa. That does NOT bode well for WOM. Early, early though. Hefty drop from Saturday.
Tele, do have plans to see Birdman? I know baumer's intrigued to hear your views in RTM and, honestly, I am too.
Sunday football affected it a lot I guess. Wonder if Vet's Day will give its Tues a boost.

In completely unrelated news: I am totally in love with Days of Future Past!! Just watched it last night…
If we count Big Hero 6 as a quasi Marvel movie, then Marvel's 4 for 5 for me this year. Much comics. So gold.
Cap and GOTG are still my top CBM movies for me. Cap's my personal favorite, but I think GOTG's the (slightly) better film.

Big Hero 6 Countdowns!!!!!!!!!!!!
161.350,220M:Countdown to Aladdin's 217,350,219
427M:Countdown to 450M OS
520.8M:Countdown to 600M WW
Very good OW. WOM seems very strong plus with winter holidays coming 4 multiplier is likely which would push it over Aladdin domestically. OS it's slow rollout but so far strong start nonetheless. In Russia, it's up to 18.2M, 3rd biggest WDAS animation there behind Frozen and Tangled. I love this movie and really hope it breaks out in China and Japan and push the WW total to over 700M+.
Yay Druv with the countdowns!!

I think D&D will do well due to nostalgia but won't open over 30 million.
You think $38-40 million is doable for BH6? That would put it on par or slightly below the drops for WIR. Um, if I mathed that right.
Tuesday Actuals: Nolan - 6.9M, BH6 - 10.5M
