  1. It's a shame 100 foot didn't open higher it has been perfect counter to the rest of the non adult driven films.

I really didn't see much advertising for the movie. And the only real reason why I watched it was that it was food related :P. But I'm glad I watched it. And even tough it didn't open very high, it's definitely finding it audience and I wouldn't be surprised by a sub 30 drop as well, if the TC numbers hold up.

It's showing some nice legs.

  4. For GOTG to stay at #1, both of the new releases would have to flop and GOTG would have to have a crazy good hold. It's a million to one shot. That said, GOTG is still looking at a great hold. Perhaps it could be flirting with 25%.

I definitely think it can drop 30% or less. This weekend's Fri-Fri and Sat-Sat drops were 29.6 and 18.8 respectively. And that's despite losing IMAX to FG.
  5. BoxOffice ‏@BoxOffice 5m

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY took in $10.36M this weekend. Domestic total now stands at $294.77M. #GOTG

And it went up. Sub 40 drop despite an inflated Labor Day 3-Day :D

I am in awe at Guardians' numbers. Will cross $300m without breaking a sweat. Bow down to the King of Summer box office and box office overall.

It's not like a mini TA but more like IM. And it's going to likely overtake IM multiple.

  8. While I liked Forrest Gump, to me it doesn't scream "classic" movie and I've never really had any desire to watch it again. I certainly wouldn't pay to see it again, unlike Ghostbusters, which I happily paid my $6 to see last Saturday. :)

Forest Gump just doesn't scream must see it in IMAX format for me. I'll see it for matinee ticket price but not $19. JP Titanic and such yes.

Those are some impressive jumps for the holdovers. Seems to point that Thursday was depressed. And the weekly holds are very good as well. That Forrest Gump PTA doesn't seem too good for IMAX only screens.

  10. Slow weekend = long time to get up a topic

    Variety: http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-rt-variety-entertainmemt1vrt1201298956-20140905-story.html

    Identical: $900k Friday/ $2.7m projection

GOTG: Friday: $2.7m / $10m w/e projection (seems like a too high multiplier proj)

    Let's Be Cops: $1.55m / $5.2m w/e proj

    TMNT:  $1.4m / 5.2m w/e proj

    NM: $4-5m w/e proj

    Above Below: $4-5m w/e proj

10M weekend for GotG can happen with a 2.7 Friday.  But that's a big if.  220%+ jump seems a bit steep.

    2.7 Friday

    4.6 Sat +70%

    2.7 Sun -40%

  11. GotG Tuesday's $1,387,915 minus 22% (worst of the big openers this year, partly in school free time I think)=> Wednesday = $1,082,573.7 IM 1 had $1,312,678 at that Tuesday, with only a very small drop, so I am guessing for now = no cheap Tuesday before that Wednesday....

Non summer days...it'll make up for it on weekends with much bigger jumps.

  12. Box Office Mojo ‏@boxoffice mojo 41 mins 'Guardians' opened to $7M in Germany this weekend. That's up 74% on 'Captain America 2' but down 17% from 'Thor 2': http://bit.ly/1Cg7HW3

I don't see Austria numbers but assuming it follows CATWS which was about 10% of Germany, it'll be around 700K -800K so say 7.8 for new territories. 27.1 week excluding new openings.

    The weekend gross was $19.7m.

Down -7.5% from last weekend and for holdovers, assuming 11.9 weekend, -44% from 21.3 last weekend. Still good hold for OS markets
