  1. Still 22 days before the French release, damn ^^"

    Damn that's late.

So BH6 is sitting at 216.6. WiR did about 8M more after MLK Jr. weekend but that came with an expansion for that weekend. BH6 didnt and likely won't get one until it goes into dollar theaters.

So going by that we are looking at 224-225. Maybe there could be a DF with Strange Magic if it's attached. And even if it did, I'm not very optimistic about a good bounce since Strange Magic looks like a dud.

  2. By comparison, Taken 2 earned $1.5 million from preview shows, as part of a $49.5 million weekend, back in October 2012. Taken 3's initial haul is also in line with last September's The Equalizer ($1.5 million Thursday night / $34.1 million weekend). Based on early results and strong online tracking, Taken 3 looks poised to top $30 million through Sunday.

If it's a similar preview number shouldn't it translate to a similar OW? I don't know about the buzz of Taken 3 but it seems to me the franchise and Liam have a nice solid fan base.

  3. I really can't figure out why Disney didn't put it there in the first place after Frozen's success. They could have totally muscled DWA out of the spot as I guarantee they would have been the one to budge. I think this could have gone as high as 280 even.

Maybe it'd be too close to BOTFA or ITW for their taste. But yeah if they wanted BH6 during Thanksgiving it wouldve forced DWA to move.

  4. Boy centric Disney animated films with the exception of The Lion King and to an extent Aladdin have never sold as well compared to the girl centric films, as I've mentioned before, Disney has the girl demographic covered from an early age to preteens but boys are much tougher to grab and while Disney has Pirates, Cars, Star Wars and Marvel that can fill that up but in terms of their own IP from WDAS and WDP, they have struggled with stuff like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, John Carter, Lone Ranger etc all flopping but recently Wreck it Ralph and BH6 have been successful but a phenomenon like Frozen but for boys hasn't happened in 20 years.

Disney doesnt have much problems selling to girls. The princess line really helps and that's where, I believe, WDAS main strength is in, fairy tales that have strong appeal to girls.

Disney bought Marvel to plug that gender gap.

Going back to BO expectations though. Yeah I had BH6 doing close to 250 so maybe my expectations were high. However, I'm not disappointed. Disappointing would've been WiR numbers. And given the BO doldrums so far this year, I believe BH6 did well enough.

  5. I doubt it can retain that lead though, as Baymax will be greatly affected by the family movies coming. Although we could still hope.

There will be competition but unless they really break out, no other substantial reason for it to reverse course. I wouldn't be too surprised if the lead continues to build.

    Edit:

Gap closed on Weds. Interesting to see if it can rebuild it going by the weekend

    7 Big Hero 6 $373,223 -24% 2,776 -392 $134 $186,474,712 6 Disney
