I'm coming to that realization myself. I loved the original Toho Godzilla flicks as a kid. But there's only so much you can do with a giant monster, other than have him fight other giant monsters. We got that in spades in G:KOTM, and it's still struggling at the BO. I figure Godzilla vs. Kong will be the absolute ceiling for this series: Once the two most popular Giant Monsters of all time go at it, what's left? GvK 2?

    ^This.

Given that the Godzilla film with the most tickets ever sold in Japan is still King Kong vs Godzilla by far (IIRC), I cant imagine any other Godzilla film doing better than that.

    What's the shitty twist

Liam Neeson's character is the bad guy, having been infected/taken over by a rogue alien for years now

We have a good director and a great cast. How can it be so bad? Guess the script must be really shitty

Honestly...the direction in this seemed pretty bland to me as well. Nothing really pops out.

Is it possible that Kaiju movies were just never that popular?

    I think its possible.

Looks like theres a B.O. ceiling to giant monster movies, but ofc I cant help but wonder what if G14 maintained its $93M OW and delivered in a way the GA majority wouldve wanted.

WOM & legs could have been very impressive.

  4. Just came out of this...I didnt really like it.

The Thompson-Hemsworth chemistry (though a far cry from Ragnarok) & the comic relief alien sidekick were the only things keeping this afloat.

The plotting & story flow just felt really by the numbers with the best shots being in the trailers (not much interesting imagery in this) and a twist that Im pretty sure wont surprise anyone.

One particular joke had the whole theater laughing though.

Getting the same tired excuses why G14 didn't do great. The most annoying one is "competition." If these films were better that would help stave off competition.

I think most (if not all) of us here put forth WOM as the main reason for G14's weekend drops.

If you look around the fandom as a whole, a good number were already aware of G14's reception among the GA as having the biggest effect on performance, and that awareness can only go up in the wake of KOTM.

That's a dream for a small number of people. It won't register with the GA. This is going to perform like just another Godzilla or Kong movie, not some kind of two franchise crossover.

If it performs like Skull Island, I think WB/Legendary would be fine with that.

(Couple Skull Island's gross with the KOTM grosses of Japan & SE Asian territories and it would look even better)

Id also contend that Freddy vs Jason was a dream for an even smaller number of people than GvsK, and that grossed a lot more than the Freddy/Jason individual entries. Would be interesting to see if GvsK would have a similar pull.

The only people who believed "iconic" monsters will draw people are the delusional Godzilla Groupies, who funnily enough have all run away from this forum after their film flopped. No one in the real world thought that audiences know who Ghidorah and Mothra are.

I hope that wasnt intentional, but theres no need to sound mean-spirited about some members just because they arent posting here right now.

Besides, nothing wrong/delusional with the line of thinking that "Godzilla & even more monsters" would gross more than "just Godzilla." People are free to speculate.

But yeah I think it would be fine to have a daylight CGI fight. Skull Island had some daylight scenes and they look fine for now so we might get one or two with Kong.

I know the VFX company playing field has become quite even for the past decade, but I wonder if ILM handling the VFX for Kong played a role in a greater confidence/capability to have monster-heavy sequences set in broad daylight?

  10. I dont think GvK is a very comparable situation to that of Annihilation & Mowgli.

Even with the downright disappointing BO of KOTM, its still on track for at least $350M...couple that with K:SI's $566M gross and Im sure WB/Legendary are banking on name value to pique audience interest.

Given that behind-the-scenes clashes of Annihilation involved conflicts as to making it more GA-friendly & less "complicated"...at least whoevers behind GvK know theyre trying to make a GA-friendly, action-heavy blockbuster with loads of licensing opportunities in the mix. GA appeal is something both WB/Legendary suits would want for something like this.

Mowgli had its own issue of figuring out just who its intended audience was, as no matter its quality...BO comparisons to Disney's version would always pop up.

    Just my two cents.

Is the director of Godzilla vs kong better than Gareth Edwards?

In terms of visuals, Edwards hands down.

In terms of handling story & filmmaking as a whole, Id go with GvK's Adam Wingard.

Sure, Blair Witch & Death Note werent very well-received, but his original ideas like Youre Next & The Guest are very enjoyable & fun genre films.

Im hoping we get to see that side of Wingard for GvK.

  12. Edwards had an eye for visuals that was pretty much unmatched by most recent blockbuster directors.

IMO expecting the same level of weight was always gonna be a long shot to begin with, but that doesnt mean KOTM lacks visual flair.

In fact, a lot of the different VFX sequences peppered throughout the films shows us that Dougherty & co. put a lot of thought into what was put on-screen.

We have the Antarctica sequence of Godzilla getting blasted-charging his breath-getting blasted in return and scenes like Mothra's emergence among others.

Along with smaller, more colorful kaiju moments like Ghidorah's left head sniffing out soldiers & Rodan snapping up a jet pilot (a direct homage to The Giant Claw).

KOTM is visually creative on a different level than G14 but the eye candy & money shots are still impressive and very much made with TLC.

Couple that with the McReary's score and youve got some supercharged Toho-worthy imagery in a Hollywood blockbuster. Impressive stuff, Id say.

I also like how in KOTM, monsters dominate the plot. When the monsters arent on screen, the characters are still talking about monsters, and the central family drama is tied into that.

After some comments that Godzilla himself wasnt that involved in the plot of G14, its a nice change of pace to see KOTM begin & end with Godzilla along with shedding some light on his pseudobiology & behavior.

Godzilla vs Kong is a bit too early, you don't want another case like KOTM where a teaser drops and then there is no follow-up for 6 months.

SDCC worked out perfectly for Aquaman and can work for August and September releases, but beyond that it is too early for anything, especially in today's environment where attention spans are much shorter.

I actually wonder if the decision to release the well-received Claire De Lune teaser for Godzilla 2 around 10 months from release wasnt that good in hindsight when it came to building buzz.

ANd the Trailers were about the monsters, with little attention to the humans. Not a good recipe to attract the General Audience.

At least with the 2014 Godzils, they had some good Bryan Cranston footage to use in the trailer to bring in the non Kaiju fan audinces.

Fact is the Kaiju fans, who will turn out no matter what, are not a big enough audience o justify the money they are spending on these films. The Japanese Godzilla films cost a lot, lot, less and they could afford a Niche appeal. Can't do that with 150 Million plus budgets.

Yeah, Bryan Cranston was the ultimate GA hook.

Reminds me of Pacific Rim's case back in 2013 when the trailers were enticing to a niche audience already on-board but not to a lot in the GA

Saw it yesterday;the  monster fights were a lot of fun, but, god, the writing for the humans was weak.

As a couple of people pointed out, they killed off the most of the interesting Human Charecters in the series.

With it underperforming at the box office, Variety reports that the future of this franchise beyond  Godzills vs Kong is very much up in the air.

If it is going to survive, they have got to improve the writing. Just sticking the mosnters up there might bring in the Kaiju fans, but is not going to workt with the General audience.

Given that the OW audience turnout was around 70% male, yup...clearly a lot of work to be done towards making stories with more appeal.

I guess that that was the reason MBB & Farmiga were cast but looks it didnt bring in much of an audience (ofc, reviews/GA reactions clearly had an effect on people on the fence).
