There is no evidence to support this claim when looking at TGM’s run, starting with a -29% second weekend that Avatar isn’t likely to match with calendar configuration.
Why giving so much weight on 1 day (24th)? It doesn't matter that much in the big picture. Plenty of holidays to make up for it.

lmao I forgot Titanic
1. ROTK
2. Gladiator
3. Titanic
4. Forrest Gump
You also forgot Braveheart and Dances with Wolves (although that was over 30 years ago).

If the Academy cares about cinema rather than their own self-interests they will give TG:M Best Picture, but bet on them giving it to a movie that grosses about $10m.
The gross should have no bearing on what wins.

Yes that's what I was thinking. Even tgm is not surety. Last time when blockbuster movie won BP was ROTK
"not a sure thing"? There's no way TGM wins best picture. Neither does Avatar have a shot.

Well, it's difficult to comment on some people's culture, really. The Japanese can say a lot of things about the West as well. Although, for the record, it's one of the things I really don't like about Japan. It's a sad thing, you know.
Just for the record, i find the japanese culture pretty fascinating and i don't think the spoilery thing we discussed is the reason for its underperformance there, or at least not the main reason.

I'm kinda sure they will see it that way. The Japanese people are smart. 😅 But I hope they still give the movie a chance.
If they are all that petty and so pro...
Spoilerwhale hunting
...i wouldn't call that smart.

As in 750M+ DOM or close to/over a 10x OW DOM multiplier?
If it does 140m on OW it only needs half the legs of the original for a great 700m total. So the possibilities are still all there, it "just" needs some good repeat viewings...

Don't forget this is 2022 not 2009. Also, WOM isn't equivalent to TGM
People are quick to judge WOM based on some metrics but i don't think those tell you the whole picture.

You really don't need premium screens for all those animes, maybe Avatar can hold onto them for a couple months and end with a respectable gross .

Latam is pretty much the only place where the 1st one did not no do incredible, and its now pretty much the only place that is having pretty great ow's
what changed?
"Pretty great OW"? It is having pretty great OW pretty much everywhere, except maybe Japan. And China but that is due to COVID.

Zoe Saldana has singing chops.
This is one of the better pieces of new music from Franglen (it's being sung during the film).

It'll do 10m+ admins in France. You can take it to the bank.

Not liking these OS numbers and domestic does not seem to be any better.
It is just one day and we had a worldcup semifinal yesterday. We should at least wait for the weekend...

Forgot one thing. Neytiri was awesome in this one. And the children were very loveable.
slight spoiler (sorry for that!)...
SpoilerThe thing is, though, Neytiri (and Jake) were just absent for long stretches, almost to the point where i wouldn't consider them main characters.

Havent seen it but from everything i heard the hfr scenes are at most 10-15% of the runtime, maybe less? Maybe someone else will confirm here
Nah, at least 50% if not more.
Sometimes it felt random, i would think to myself why did they switch here. It was not always closeups in 24fps and action in 48fps. To be frank, i would have preferred the whole movie in HFR, the difference is stark. Those who don't like it could watch a regular screening.

For anyone who has seen it, how is Simon Franglen's score?
I'd say it gets the job done but the best parts are for the most part Horner's themes they reuse.

where did you rank the original Avatar amongs Jim's filmography?
As i have posted elsewhere, i group them in two tiers:
- the "amazing" tier: T1, T2, Aliens, Titanic
- the "pretty great" tier: Avatar, Abyss, True Lies

Just saying the 24th and the 31th falling on a saturday doesn't mean much. On the other hand having more or less 2 weeks of holidays will give it plenty of room to develop some legs.
No, we shouldn't expect it to mimic TGM legs wise but we also shouldn't rule it out. If anyone should be given the benefit of the doubt, it's Cameron.
