I liked the first 20 minutes or so with the more heavy-handed narration. The rest of the movie wasn't terrible, but wasn't that compelling, either.
I only saw it once on theaters and I was't expecting a good movie, I was indeed thinking it would be awful. To my surprise it was pretty funny and well paced the whole time without even a single moment that was slow or boring. Before watching it I couldn't imagine an entire movie about those yellow things that could work as I only saw them as sidekick or secondary funny characters like Scrat from Ice Age, but the movie delivered.
It is the movie that I've enjoyed the most off the 4 movies. Personally, I don't find Gru and the rest of people as interesting characters. Also I will always remember the first Minions movie because my father was laughing his ass off the whole time and he always falls sleep at the movie theaters every time we go

Pretty saddened about Detective Pikachu’s OW. Box office-wise, DP seems to have one of WB’s most disappointing OW for a big tentpole since ”Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” in 2014.....which also opened at $54M. 🙍🏻♀️
What was your initial prediction?

Yes.

I can see the next Pokemon movie doing even less

This will be huge but not sure if it could replycate the phenomenon the first one was with its song and all. But I guess $400-500m will be possible

Batman Begins had much better reception than Pika is getting so far
Not to mention the Joker is the most widely known comic book villain, what do the Pokemon franchise has to offer to the General Audiences to get that kind of boost to Pokemon 2' box office? Nothing

Great news for Pikachu.
It will beat the 1999 Pokémon film ($152m adjusted) to be the number two video game adaption of all time.
Two out of the top 3 video game adaptations are Pokémon movies (adj.) Who knew?!
Endgame will settle snuggly in the #2 spot on the all time list. Will likely beat Avatar’s admissions.
That remains to be seen, it has a great chance of missing that mark. HTTYD3 had much better reviews and only got Shrek the Third legs
-
Anyway, Detective Pikachu does NOT deserve to gross more that HTTYD 3

Don't wanna make Nolan fans angry but there is a high chance Shrek 2 sold more tickets than TDK by the discount prices on kids tickets and TDK's around $50m IMAX showings at 94 locations

Nope. It’s at 75 million admissions. A head of TDK which is at 74 million. Nice of you to conveniently shave off about 15 million admissions. 😂
You sounds like a Nolanite.
Even Shrek 2 has more admissions than TDK

$45-55m will be the range for OW for Defective PikaFlop
-
I think a new Shrek movie could get 20 million tickets again...
-
This is absolutely doomed
-
$24m today
$20m tomorrow
-
And I thought the Pokémons looked horrible but this (Sonic) just takes the cake...

A decade ago the Spidey/Pirates/Shrek summer was as big as a box office competition could get and now we have a movie outgrossing their entire runs before dinner time on Sunday.
But not adjusted

I think Shrek 5 is practically a lock. A Pokémon Red/Blue adaptation has a chance but it may be too repetitive for the GA and would have to be split into parts. Harry Potter 9 can also do it and something from DC, eventually.
Lets see how much Detective Pikachu does and then we can talk about whether Pokemon Red/Blue could do $200m OW
